Paid Members Chilly McFreeze Posted September 23, 2011 Paid Members Share Posted September 23, 2011 (edited) Just remembered I posted in here a while back saying I'd post some more songs.  A lot of people are linking some of the later stuff, but since the Remastered releases a couple of years ago, I really got into their early stuff.  It's where the bulk of their 'filler' is, and there's a couple of sub par covers, but I found out some real hidden gems. Although Pepper is still my favourate album, the early era (up to and including Help!) is now my favourate. I'm not sure why, it just feels more fun to me. Less serious stuff (manily from Lennon and George) draggin it down. I get the feeling that by Pepper, only Macca was enjoying beaing a Beatle.  So, here's a couple of early ones that rock my boat at the mo'  Hold Me Tight  It's the minor change at the bridge that really makes this tune better than just filler.  Thank You Girl  This is a B Side, and I just love it, the harmonies are great and Ringo has a great little solo spot at the end.   Ringo managing to sound like a ticking clock again, I love him for it. Great Lennon vocals and a really soulfull song.  Yes It Is  Great 3 part harmonies, and some great chord changes. It's got a really odd vibe to it that I can't quite put my finger on.  Will probably post some more later when I get home. Nicely done  Yes It Is Great 3 part harmonies, and some great chord changes. It's got a really odd vibe to it that I can't quite put my finger on. This is one of my favourites, from any era. As you say, there's an indefinable quality about it; the rawness of the recording plays a big part, the harmonies are well executed and the wordplay throughout the song with the whole 'red is the colour that will make me blue' is just great. Definitely one of their most underrated songs and a precursor to some of Lennon's best writing in the couple of years which followed. Etc etc. I may not agree with the rankings, but the write-ups are absolutely brilliant. It's a phenomenal read. If anyone else is reading this thread and hasn't clicked the link, CLICK THE LINK.  The list was originally a special issue of the magazine, so I'm thrilled they've put it on the site - the issue was never released over here. I've just read the first ten or so whilst I kill a bit of time before I pop out and it's already got me wanting to cancel my plans. I'm due to get home for about 9:30pm so will probably finish the rest later. I am torturing myself by not skipping to number one to see if it's what I think it is, but as you say no two people would agree with the ranking so it's all about enjoying the write ups. Awards Moderator HarmonicGenerator Posted September 23, 2011 Awards Moderator Share Posted September 23, 2011 (edited) I love the explanation given for Yellow Submarine - it gets a lot of hate, but they're dead right in calling it "the gateway drug that turns little children into Beatle fans". It was definitely that for the young me! Â EDIT: Love the George Martin quote they mention in the write-up for 'I Am The Walrus' when he heard Lennon play it for the first time: "What the hell do you expect me to do with that?" Awards Moderator HarmonicGenerator Posted October 3, 2011 Awards Moderator Share Posted October 3, 2011 The Tyneside in Newcastle are doing it with an intermission so people can refresh. Selling quite well according to their Twitter, but I have a meeting tomorrow night so can't go.The Rolling Stone issue with Harrison on the cover is now out over here. The article probably won't give any additional info to die-hards but is a nice read with excerpts from the Material World... book and some great photos.
