To quote myself yesterday, "Let's face it, this isn't over by a long shot"

Especially not when you've got Inverness coming out with the sort of statement they came out with yesterday. A cynic could suspect that the 'no to SPL' vote was conditional on a guarantee given to them that the newclub would be in Division 1. Kilmarnock obviously feel the same way, but who else? If another 3 or 4 SPL cowards are thinking along similar lines, there could still be more madness to come.

Inverness Caledonian Thistle directors are to meet this weekend to reconsider the financial effects of Rangers 'newco' having been voted in to the Third Division.

Club chairman Kenny Cameron said:" There will now inevitably be serious consequences for the game in Scotland.

"We have all, as clubs, accepted the views of our stakeholders in making the initial judgement to uphold sporting integrity. All clubs will now have to live with the repercussions of this decision. Scottish football was at a cross roads today in terms of what was on the table for all clubs regarding reorganisation, financial distribution and a road map that would have taken the game forward.

"But this has now been thrown in to disarray by this decision. This is a sad day for all clubs in Scotland."

Mr Cameron added: "None of us will escape the financial fallout from this. There was an opportunity on the table, in terms of the joint agreement tabled at today

What annoys me about all this is that it was all done under the guise of blackmail. Everyone has sort of assumed that Neil Doncaster had gone rogue, myself included, but after that statement by Kenny Cameron, it's now clear he was just doing the bidding of the clubs. The SPL clubs wanted to be seen to "punish Rangers" when, in fact, they wanted Sevco all along. It's the duplicity which is most galling. It's like these people just refuse to learn from the mistakes of the past.

The SFL and SPL are clearly a thinly-veiled franchise system, as was exposed when Airdrieonians fans purchased and moved Clydebank to Airdrie with the SFL's consent. This wasn't a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, league reconstruction could be done any time. It was presented at this time so they could have Rangers' successor club back sooner rather than later. It's not both sides of the same coin, it's two different coins altogether. What a disingenuous bunch of bastards.

Add St Midden to the list of teams taking the hump at the SFL's decision

St Mirren chairman Stewart Gilmour has hit out at Scottish Football League chairmen after they vote a Rangers newco into the Third Division.

Representatives from 30 member clubs overwhelmingly decided Sevco Scotland Limited must play in the bottom tier of the league structure after rejecting proposals which could have seen the Ibrox side play in the First Division.

Gilmour was one of ten SPL chairmen to vote against admitting Charles Green

I'm absolutely disgusted by those two statements. Here is Dons statement after the SFL vote...

Aberdeen Chairman Stewart Milne has given his reaction to today's decision by the Scottish Football League to accept Rangers NewCo's request to join the SFL as an associate member and subsequently admit them into the third division.

"Following the SPL meeting last week and the vote to refuse Rangers NewCo admission to the SPL we felt that that the SFL clubs should be left alone to decide whether to grant Rangers NewCo associated membership of the SFL and, if this was approved, which division they should be in. We acknowledge that today they have made that clear decision. It is now time to move on.

"We will work together with the remaining SPL clubs on the season ahead and ensuring everything possible is done to secure the continuing support of our broadcasting and sponsor partners with Rangers NewCo in the SFL.

"Once the season is underway this will offer the opportunity to carry out a comprehensive review of the league structure going forward that will meet the aspirations of the Scottish football supporters, improve the quality of senior football in Scotland, bring about long term financial stability for senior clubs and place football at the heart of our communities.

"Finally I would like to address Aberdeen supporters directly. The challenges facing every club in Scotland going forward are severe, not least to our own club. I urge every single Dons supporter to get behind the Club, and the time to do that is now, as we face these challenges that have come about as a result of this situation which was not of our making."

And Dundee United's statement.

Following yesterday's democratic vote by the SFL clubs in favour of admitting The Rangers Football Club as an associate member of the SFL, but with the Third Division being the only acceptable position, Dundee United will now focus on our upcoming campaign while working together with the other SPL clubs to ensure the stability of the SPL and Scottish football in what will be an uncertain and extremely challenging financial environment.

For the avoidance of doubt, following yesterday's vote, the Club would not support any counter proposals for the formation of SPL 2 or regarding any other route for The Rangers Football Club to join the SPL.

Now is the time for everyone to be united as one and we ask our supporters to stand alongside us as we face the challenges ahead.

Hope this isn't going to be another case of counting the for and against statements.

Jim Traynor is an astounding moron.

Clubs must do the right thing - vote Newco into first division

THE first person who says the problem of Rangers newco is nothing to do with the SFL should be marched back down Hampden's steps and told never to darken football's door again.

We are way beyond whingeing and finger pointing.

Of course the SFL didn't create this mess but on July 4, when the SPL said no to Rangers newco, the problem arrived at their door and now they have to deal with it.

And so today the SFL must strive to do the right thing.

Whatever they do they must not make an even bigger mess and to avoid that they will need to stay focused and remember today isn't about blame.

It's not even about the cause of the current crisis, the club formerly known as Rangers. In an ideal world their offspring would have been forced to apply for membership of the SFL, starting at the very bottom of course. But Scottish football has never been the perfect environment.

If anything, our game has always been a bit of a cesspit.

And isn't it hilarious the way clubs and fans have been screaming about sporting integrity as if morality and honesty are the twin pillars on which the game was built? You'd find more honest brokers at a convention of bankers than you'd ever stumble across in the football business.

However, today we have an opportunity to do the right thing, not just for the few but the many. This is the day the clubs who were left behind in 1998, when a group too big for their boots decided they would break away and form the SPL, can rise above the anger and bluster and vote for the greater good.

They have a chance to lay the foundations which might give us a fighting chance on all the important fronts: youth development, coaching, league sizes, governance, voting structures and standards. A different distribution of wealth should also be brought into play but will the right decision be made?

Trouble is you have to wonder if the correct decision can be made when even the SFL's clubs face different but powerful temptations. Those in the First Division might want Rangers in with them to get a little more gate money for a season or two while Third Division members would want the same thing.

But hopefully enough will be able to see the bigger picture as painted by the governing bodies.

They claim as much as

Sorry for double post but over 9,000 at the Dundee derby friendly today. Aye, Scottish football's dying eh?

10,121 officially. Not bad considering it is smack bang in the middle of the (my) holidays.

Can't wait for SPL football again, DFC

See, I feel that if a club gets booted because of financial irregularities, they should fill the relegation spot and the relegated club should be reprieved. Then again, is that because that's the way I've grown up with things done, I don't know. There was one promotion slot, Dundee missed out on it.
