My Best Film?

A whole host of Academy Awards, Golden Globes, BAFTAs and other awards along with reels and reels of films, De Niro is already in legendary status, but which film do you think has been his best?

Here's a reminder of just some of them:

Analyze This, Raging Bull, Mean Streets, Cape Fear, The Deer Hunter, Taxi Driver, Shark Tale, Goodfellas, Godfather Part II, Midnight Run

New York New York, A Bronx Tale, Heat, Casino, Ronin, The Score, Meet The Parents, Meet The Fokkers, Little Fokkers, Sleepers, Backdraft and loads more!

De Niro's best film is always going to be a tough one to pick out of all the ones he's done, but be brave! Godfather will always have a place in my heart, but i'm going to shy away from picking it as his "best". Loved his comedy too in the Meet The Parents / Fokkers and Little Fokkers too, but i'm not going to pick any of them either. I'm not even going to pick one of his famed gangster roles - i'm going with the Waylon Mercy inspired Max Cady performance in Cape Fear. A chilling, scary and brilliant performance as the main villain in the movie.

What's your pick?

Goodfellas. Maybe not just for DeNiro's performance but the best film he's been in. His performance in Casino was better but a more flawed film overall.

If anyone votes for Frankenstein I give up.

Taxi driver for me, but I have always perversely enjoyed his performance in King Of Comedy.

The King Of Comedy is an incredible performance. I also thought Sandra Bernhard was absolutely outstanding in it too. She's a superb actress when she's not pissing around being incredibly annoying. Anyway.

Although the last 10 years have been almost a complete write-off, this is still almost an impossible question to answer. There are so many great performances. My personal favourite is still Midnight Run because he shows comedy timing and improvisational skills that were well above what anyone expected.

There are the obvious great performances that everyone knows about, but I think he was the best thing in Jackie Brown and Mad Dog And Glory is a really nice little role for him as well.

Hmm A tough on indeed. I liked his performance in Wag The Dog, and also The Mission, The Untouchables, Heat and Backdraft. Not overkeen on Gangster flicks as a rule but he was very good in GoodFellas.

Gunna have to go with Cape Fear though...

Not enough love for Heat here, I think. Just for THAT cafe scene alone, it's got to be a serious contender for his best. Consider the film as a whole, and I can't really think of many that really compare - Godfather II is great, and I'm aware this criticism isn't particularly fair, but I personally can't get past seeing his performance as being great for reproducing and modifying Marlon Brando's turn, rather than being a great performance in its own right; sort of like hearing a top-quality cover of a great song.

King of Comedy is an excellent shout, as is Goodfellas, but I think Heat beats them by some way.

As much as I love Goodfellas, Heat & The Untouchables, and I do mean love, I'm not gonna pick them cause there was a multitude of good performances backing him up in those movies and they aren't great just cause of him. I'd plump for something he carried more on his own and while still spoilt for choice, I'm going to have to pick Taxi Driver. Excellently written character that he made his own, Travis Bickle is the purposeless Icon, I'm sure many people have identified with over the last 35 years, I know I have and for that it gets my vote.
