They had a great roster of fighters. I did start to work my way through it (show by show) no long ago but lost track, i'll go back to it one day. He's not a fighter but he knows his f'n shit. He used to be a regular on MMAjunkie radio and if you ever wanna hear a detailed breakdown/preview of a fight you need to listen to Laimon's, he's an encyclopedia of knowledge. Phil Baroni had a massive grudge against him for his gameplanning, he also pissed off someone I cannot remember for making them cut weight and fighting at a weight they were drained at. Loads of good fighters have trained with him over the years so he's clearly good at what he does. Not knocking him for that. But I can only judge him from what I've seen and on that season of TUF he came off as such a cock. Ripping into the Gracies in front of Serra, knowing full well Serra is a Renzo blackbelt. Bragging about Royce losing to Hughes. Saying Rickson's ground game was a myth. Then he was refusing to get in the cage and help guys out. There was even a clip on TUF 4 (maybe on the extras) and someone asked him for help with a technique or something and he flat out said something like "Why? What do you need me in there for?" and didn't get in. He was asking for that verbal raping for ages before Serra finally went nuts on him. I don't know Lemon but from just seeing how he carried himself on TUF he comes across like one of them kind of people I really hate. They've got a problem with someone but instead of saying it to the person they'll have little digs to someone else nearby so that person can hear. Everything they say is a thinly veiled insult to provoke a reaction. Then they act shocked if they get told to shit off. Glad Serra told him what was up. All these MMA and Boxing shows every week lately have really sidetracked that. Anyway, listened to Joe Rogan's podcast with Bas Rutten yesterday. I'd only seen bits before so I did the whole thing last night. All two hours. It's really good, Bas just seems like such a great bloke. His stories about the Sweden bar fight and being sent to jail were nuts. You get great insight into his career aswell, how he went from being just a striker and taught himself to grapple with no real BJJ coaches. You get a good sense of why he stopped fighting aswell, I had no idea how bad his injuries got. So yeah, if you got a couple of hours to kill I'd highly recommend it. Full thing's on Youtube. Oh and my main reason for this post, Bas told a quick story I never heard before during the podcast. Apparently he almost came out of retirement twice to fight in Pride. Meltzer reported that he suffered one injury after another in training, and went into the fight with a separated rib, a torn groin and a torn ACL that required surgery. The only reason he went through with the fight was because he was getting a base $200,000 (plus a win bonus), and it was the largest pay day of his career. Early Pancrase, UFC, Pride, DREAM. He's trained fighters, commentated, and now the TV stuff like Inside MMA. Plus all his outside the cage stories, and he's even done a bit of pro wrestling for New Japan. Would be a really interesting read. Oh and that Bas vs Wand fight, if it happened, would have been on the Pride/K-1: Dynamite joint supershow in 2002. In front of about 90,000 fans. That show was great as it was, the addition of a Rutten vs Silva fight would make it one of the most stacked cards of all time. Kazushi Sakuraba vs Mirko Cro Cop Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs Bob Sapp Bas Rutten vs Wanderlei Silva Jerome Le Banner vs Don Frye Royce Gracie vs Hidehiko Yoshida Ernesto Hoost vs Semmy Schilt Mental. Silva was just entering his prime and Bas was coming of a long layoff, Bas was never a big Heavyweight and would fight at 205lbs if we could bring the 25 year old version back in a time warp. I am not sure how good Bas was or how good he could have been, he was one of the best of his era, if it was not for Frank Shamrock maybe he would have won best fighter of the 90's in that Wrestling Observer Poll, despite his losses to Ken Shamrock early in his career he was a better fighter than him by the time he hung up his boots. Bas would have destroyed him in 2002 if that fight would have happened and that is a compliment, Ken was not that much of a spent force before the first Tito fight. Bas did beat Kevin Randleman, in a fight I have never seen but heard he won a rare points decision by being on the bottom and doing damage that way. A smart guy and way ahead of his time, as shown by how he tried talking sense into Mark Kerr in Smashing Machine. Kerr would have been so much more also if he spent more time with Bas in my opinion. As much as I like Bas and understand why he retired and that he did a lot anyway, I always think "could have been so much more in Pride" if he had not hung them up.
