I know it's pretty silly to judge what's likely to be a 3 hour movie from a trailer, but the performances seem a little... big. A little panto. I hated the casting of Martin Freeman, because I can't stand him, and that doesn't sell me at all. Plus, the two post-LOTR films Peter Jackson directed were unbelievably atrocious. There's been just enough mention of it from the original cast to whet people's appetites but I don't think they've ever even got to a point where all the principle players have even agreed verbally? I wasn't too high on different writers coming in, but they'd worked on the American Office, so that's cool. But then Year One, written by them and even starring Egon came out, and stank. Supposedly that put the skids on GB3, which was as close to happening as it's ever been, because it bombed so hard and totally put the studio and Bill Murray right off. Quote

If the original players were truly interested & had some good ideas it would've been made by now, if they were to do it after this long it'd be a blatant payday. If they were to do a re-imagining/remake it'd no doubt be shit as the original is so iconic they'd be fighting a losing battle before it even went before the cameras Quote

Loki Posted December 21, 2011 Posted December 21, 2011 The Hobbit looks good, good good. The look of it is nice, slightly smaller and more intimate than LOTR, dark for dark places as it were. Cast list looks good too. I don't have a problem with Freeman at all, though it's good to see Ian Holm getting another outing too. Will he be the narrator? That would be great. Ken Stott is in, which is good. Some things interest me too about their approach. Sylvester McCoy is in it as Radagast The Brown, which is interesting as IIRC he's only ever mentioned in The Hobbit, and never seen. Also, the trailer makes it clear that they're going to add into the narrative the sense of destiny (with the discovery of the ring etc), retconned from LOTR which isn't present in the original book to any great extent. I think that's absolutely the right thing to do, but it'll make the story darker than the book, which is in the main a children's story. Quote

I think it looks better than that but this will test whether he can carry a film or may be best of sticking to supporting roles like he's done so far outside of Borat/Bruno. The commentary on the Bruno for me was more interesting to me than the movie in how it highlighted it was almost impossible for him to make that mockumentary style of film anymore as people were on to him too quickly. This is a scripted comedy with actors where as I think his best work is when he's talking to real people as one of his characters. Quote

With Borat, generally, the comedy came from the awkwardness of people tip-toeing around a guy they thought was being unintentionally rude, because he was a foreigner. Bruno is just an out and out monster, so those sections generally don't work at all. Plus, it was a bit directionless until the last half hour. Who were the targets? People who'd be offended that a guy swapped a baby for an iPod? Once it's onto the homophones, although it's not exactly subtle, it gets better. = Quote

But in the film he was being so obnoxious that half the time I couldn't blame any of his victims for their reactions which, given the circumstances, didn't necessarily make them the dickheads he was trying to paint them as. Also it didn't help that the storyline was exactly the same as Borat. Sure, it's just a vehicle for stringing a narrative together out of the situations he throws himself into, but there is enough scripted content to warrant putting in a modicum of thought into the plot.
