I've liked her in Bridesmaids and Identity Thief ( neither of which even remotely alluded to her size ), but I seen The Heat, and her role in that was basically "I'm an annoying fat person that swears".

See I hated that film because she was one of the most unlikeable characters I've seen in a long time, just horrible. Like the 10 minutes Steve Martin is a total twat in Planes Trains and automobiles stretched out for 90minutes without any development.

Pretty much. It's the fact she plays the same character in every single movie she's been in since Bridesmaids, that I'm just starting to resent her when she appears onscreen in front of me.

The only role I ever saw her in where she was showing her dramatic chops was in The Nines. She was okay in that I suppose, but I never bought her as Ryan Reynolds' other half.

I thought Bridesmaids was alright. If she's been typecast or is only being offered those sort of roles since that's not really her fault tbh. I find it a bit odd when people blame an actor/actress for not being funny. If they didn't write & direct it surely the fault lies with the creative team? Rather than the person acting out the script the way the director wants them to.

Well it doesn't work like that, does it? Otherwise you could just say any actor is just "acting out what the director wanted" so there's no point giving anyone credit for their performances in anything.

Not really. A good performance is still a good performance, if a script is a stinker no amount of talent with comedic delivery is going to elevate it. Just like a brilliant actor not being able to take a poorly written/directed dramatic film & turn it gold. Look at some of the shit De Niro's been in of late. Neither him or Pacino could make 'Righteous Kill' a classic, yet most would still consider them great actors.

So actors should only get praise if something is good, but if it's shit then it is the fault only of the writers and directors?

 

It's all collaborative, and there are degrees of ownership and responsibility that are individually different in absolutely every case.

I thought it was one of the crappest films I saw last year. I can see why Michael Mann has practically disowned it.

 

It's horrible, shit awful junk. If it wasn't by Mann, no-one would care. Might as well have been directed by Manfred Mann.

My point was that someone saying 'X only plays 1 type of character' or 'X isn't funny' is a short sighted criticism unless you know what other roles they've been offered or how much, if any input they had into the creative process. Of course film making is a collaborative process, yet you hear people saying things like 'Danny McBride's shit, I saw 'Your Highness', he's not funny'. Of course he wasn't funny in that because it was a badly written mess. He's brilliant in 'Eastbound & Down' because it isn't.

OK, yeah that's fair enough then. And actually exactly what I meant when I said "I've only seen her in Bridesmaids, but I just didn't like that as a film" - I meant I couldn't judge her on that because I didn't like the whole thing.

 

Also, in those instances whilst it may not be fair to blame the actor, it would be fair to avoid their films on the assumption that you won't like them.

I thought he lost a shitload of weight. Evidently I was wrong.

 

Getting back to Melissa McCarthy;

Fair points by Expired Michael, indeed, but I do believe an actor/actress has to shoulder some blame, regardless of the script. They are the ones delivering the lines. Leslie Nielsen could make a horror show like Wrongfully Accused funny, because he's just naturally funny.

Bill Murray could turn an average or poor script with mediocre lines like, say Meatballs, Quick Change or even The Man Who Knew Too Little and turn his screentime to gold because of his delivery.

Dramatically, look at Oldman. Look at Romeo Is Bleeding, The Scarlet Letter and even go so far as Lost In Space. All relatively average to bottom rung shit material and when he's on screen he manages to elevate the movie around him from average or poor, to magnificent. Just because of what he can do with his character.
