Paid Members BigJag Posted Saturday at 07:23 AM Paid Members Posted Saturday at 07:23 AM (edited) Wonderful reply from Stewart. ENGAGEd the audience. Best captain. He's definitely surpassed Kirk now. Amazing career. Edited Saturday at 10:23 AM by BigJag Quote
Paid Members air_raid Posted Sunday at 07:57 AM Paid Members Posted Sunday at 07:57 AM Worth remembering that as well as Starfleet Captain, Stonecutter etc the man was a tremendous wit. The Clarkson one yes, but he was also fabulous on Twatter. Quote
deathrey Posted Sunday at 10:44 AM Posted Sunday at 10:44 AM (edited) It's been a strange couple of days, for those that don't know, Patrick Stewart is very much an icon in Huddersfield, he is held in the very highest of regard by everyone, there are other famous people from Huddersfield but he was different in that he was so very proud of being from here and very much shouted about it whenever he got the chance, he still had a house here up untill 2022. I'm in Huddersfield for half term this week and I'm glad I was here when he passed, it gave a feeling of comfort. I was out and about running errands on Friday and no matter where I went, every single person bought up his passing. The town hall and library in Mirfield flew their flags at half mast for him which I thought was really touching and Huddersfield Town wore black armbands in his memory yesterday. Everyone from Huddersfield has a Patrick Stewart story of some description, I saw him a couple of times at work events when he was the Chancellor of the University. He was really active and took the role very seriously unlike a lot of others who take it as a ceremonial role, he was here all the time, particularly during graduation periods where he would hand out degrees. I never spoke to him as I never wanted to bother him, I'm also a bit shy but he was such an enigmatic person and had such a grand presence. I hope that he gets a statue here eventually, either at the Town ground or at the University - most of the performing arts department is already named in his honour. I worked at his old school for a short amount of time and there is a blue plaque commemorating him there but that's been there for years, I worked there over 10 years ago. I really think he deserves something extra special, I think he will always be our most famous son. Edited Sunday at 04:47 PM by deathrey Quote
Paid Members Jazzy G Posted Sunday at 10:53 AM Paid Members Posted Sunday at 10:53 AM I'm surprised there's not a statue already. There should be, or maybe Huddersfield Town will get a Sir Patrick Stewart stand at their ground. Heck why not both? Quote
deathrey Posted Sunday at 11:09 AM Posted Sunday at 11:09 AM Honestly, I think both. He was the most vocal and famous supporter that Town have and probably will ever have. I'm glad he got to see them in a Premiership run. He attended all but one of their home matches during their first season in the Premier League so I hope they give him a stand. There isn't a massive amount of scope for statues in Huddersfield but there is a big entrance in to the university that can been seen from the dual carriageway and parts of the town centre which would be a great place for a statue, or outside the Town ground which is a little out of the way but has a great space for one, and is currently lacking anything like that. Huddersfield currently has a Reform led council and with Sir Patrick being such a big wokey I'm not sure they will push for a statue or take calls for one seriously in the town but the Uni and Football club could easily do it. Paid Members Carbomb Posted Sunday at 12:15 PM Paid Members Posted Sunday at 12:15 PM Is Mirfield part of Huddersfield? My mum often mentioned how she was born in the same hospital that he was. Quote
deathrey Posted Sunday at 12:32 PM Posted Sunday at 12:32 PM Mirfield and Huddersfield are both part of Kirklees along with Dewsbury. Huddersfield is the big town amongst the three so tends to be the one that gets a name check rather than people saying they are from Kirklees as who has heard of that? Patrick Stewart was born in Mirfield but moved to Huddersfield when he was quite young so is a mix of both but people do use the two interchangeably. Quote
