Fog Dude Posted October 22 Posted October 22 It doesn't really sit well with me that when the other thread this discussion was in was hijacked, the first counter-argument was (as it too often is in this country) "you can't be 100% sure somebody actually did it" as opposed to "the state taking anybody's life is always wrong in principle" Even if you accept Chutney Spoon's premise, that he so casually dropped into the previous convo as if we'd all agree, that one particular offence is somehow way worse than all the others people could be convicted of, reintroducing capital punishment would be a slippery slope that could then see it start being used for lesser crimes. Describing an "example" of a case that he'd consider beyond the pale in gory, morbid detail which wouldn't even cross the minds of most right-thinking people is well dodgy too, just sayin'. Quote
Paid Members Jazzy G Posted October 22 Paid Members Posted October 22 I'm more interested in the Danish model where they offer offenders counselling and help to try and work out the issues that led to the crime(s) being committed and support them through their rehabilitation. Quote

There are three overall reasons for incarceration and all of them are valid. - Retributive justice is important for society. People, on the whole, need to see wrongdoers punished and the moral order upheld. It's part of deterrence. - Keeping wrong 'uns off the streets so they don't reoffend. More specific deterrence for those individuals by removing their means and opportunity. - And finally rehabilitation. The other reasons are very valid, but we definitely don't focus on this nearly enough. Quote

Best chance of getting them to reconsider is to point out how dangerous the punishment is. Quote
Paid Members I Bent My Wookie Posted Friday at 08:16 PM Paid Members Posted Friday at 08:16 PM @Tim Healys Chutney Spoon this entire thread created from you potentially being a lunatic is incredibly uncomfortable considering the field of work you're in, the comments and suggestions you've made and just the general behaviours. I don't know why I decided to read the entire thing because honestly this thread is one of the worst parts of the Internet I've viewed lately but maybe take some time away from the online world. Because I and I assume others are incredibly feeling uncomfortable from how in depth your posts are and frankly it makes me worry about being on this forum if this is what people can view as "discussion". Weird. Just uncomfortably weird. Quote

Personally he should hang, as should all child abusers. Dead late to the conversation, as I don't leave Song of the Day normally and I'm part time there, however I'll be short and sweet rather than the normal height and bitter twat I am. Timothy Evans being pardoned didn't bring him back. And also, doesn't wanting someone to hang make you a monster like the abuser? Revenge is not justice. I despise the DUP, and Donaldson, and all they stand for, but it's not 1974. We can't go around kneecapping and lynching. Edited Saturday at 02:35 AM by HandsomeButchIII Quote
