Everything up to Wrestlemania, fine. But if it was going to work longer than that, they needed a new leader, as the nWo vs DX idea @Supremo mentioned definitely had legs.

So, the night after Wrestlemania, I'd have Hall and Nash start talking about how they have a new third man. Over the month, they drop hints. It's someone they knew back in the day. And at Backlash, they'll be leaving with the gold.

Keep the matches on Backlash as they were, but as it gets towards the end of Hogan/HHH, the nWo come out to the ring. Triple H seems bothered, telling them to leave, which distracts him enough that Hogan wins.

The lights go out, coming back on with someone in the ring, doing the whole 'hidden power' thing - wearing a cloak and hood, but covered in nWo logos, revealed to be... The Undertaker.

They beat down Hogan and HHH, walk away with the belt, and we keep Hogan/Undertaker at the next PPV, and Taker's heel run through the rest of the year is supported by the nWo.

It'd be more of a biker gang feel with Taker leading it, but him running it gives it some credibility when Nash and Hall leave, plus you have more storyline and surrounding group matches with Hogan, DX, etc.

I wonder what the plan actually was for Triple H and the nWo; before Nash got reinjured, the storyline they were building to was with Shawn Michaels and the nWo trying to win Triple H over, but that was dropped and changed to RAW and Smackdown competing for Triple H's services, and then the weird angle where Triple H and Shawn did a mock DX reunion, Triple H turned on Shawn and attacked him, then attacked him again backstage but pretended it wasn't him and pretended to investigate it for some reason.

I doubt Shawn wanted to work heel in his comeback, so I assume the plan was for whatever Triple H did with the nWo to lead to him turning on Shawn in short order anyway, but where that leaves Nash and X-Pac and so on is an interesting point. I do think that if they stuck around longer than they did, the nWo inevitably becomes a variation on The Kliq and much less the Hogan show.

And going back to Hogan, I really don't think you can reiterate how risky just bringing Hulk back in red and yellow with the Real American music would have been. There's no guarantee that he had any good matches left in him, or that he would be prepared to do business with anyone - all feeding into why Austin ducked wrestling him - and the WWE had spent years telling people that he was a washed up old relic, and he'd spent the latter part of his WCW run looking like a joke desperately trying to stay relevant; the last time the average TV wrestling fan would have seen Hulk Hogan before he came back to the WWF, he was laying down for Jeff Jarrett, and before that he was dicking around with Billy Kidman and Vampiro. The WWF (and pop culture in general) weren't a nostalgia machine yet, it was a massive risk to bring someone like him back at such a high level, and I think having him part of the nWo was a far better use of him.

Guaranteed that whatever the plan was with Triple H and the nWo, someone had already pitched this finish, with Nash throwing up the Kliq hand signal only for Hunter to bonk him with the sledgehammer regardless.

At least it would have made sense in 2002. Not so much nine years later, as the storyline conclusion to *checks notes* CM Punk leaving the company with the WWE Title?

I don't think you get that in 2002, because I'm convinced that moment is Triple H wanting his version of Shawn's "I'm sorry, I love you" against Flair, or the "stay down" from Shawn/Undertaker. It's this desperate attempt at an iconic visual, and there was a time around then when it seemed like Triple H was aiming for it in every single match, and never managed it.

Hogan coming back in the red and yellow would have been a disaster for Rock and Austin. No way would he not demand to beat them both. He was cutting shoot remarks in the XWF about "The Rock and The Stone". He was jealous. He was humbled I think because Vince didn't bring him back as THE GUY but as an nWo heel.

Probably for the best that happened then. I can't imagine him putting over Lesnar in such brutal and devastating fashion if he still thought he could get away with being the Hogan of old.

Wasn't it the rumour that Hogan put over Brock so willingly in August because he was supposed to get his win back at Survivor Series in MSG? but Hogan and Vince had one of their falling outs and we got poxy Big Show in slacks beating Brock instead.

Wouldn't be surprised - seems that that was the only way Hogan would ever agree to job. Same with when he jobbed to Angle.

I don't think he was ever going to get the win back. I wouldn't be surprised if Vince just said that to get him in the ring to get the match.
