Oh I love listening to Buddy Landel. Promos, shoot interviews, the lot. Great talker. The brief stop in the WWF was bad luck but the earlier stuff was more terrible choices than luck according to Buddy himself. He basically said he was young and an idiot and he thought the money was just gonna keep rolling in forever. As long as he had his bag of coke he didn’t care at the time but clearly regretted it later. He’s definitely a bit of a ‘what if?’ for me but even later on, he was never gonna get a proper go in the WWF when he was built like a pile of mashed potatoes.

Little bonus, he actually made an appearance on Shotgun as late as 1999 against Triple H.

Chris Candido has to be a shout for this. Goes through all the struggles with addiction and drug abuse, finally gets himself clean, starts working indies and gets an opportunity in TNA in 2005. Always really saddens me whenever I see anything with Candido in it. I’m not sure how long he’d have stayed clean anyway, him and Sunny together just seemed absolutely toxic for each other. But there’s something extra cruel about the timing and how it ended for him.

 

 

From what I remember about his Darkside of the Ring, wasnt it actually that he had surgery, went against doctors orders and almost immediately took a flight to appear at the TV tapings , which caused the blood clot that caused his death?

Going back to Budro, another great line courtesy of Al Snow when he had a sense of humour, impersonating him: "I've got a Cadillac and a Lincoln Continental. They're repo'ed, but they're mine!"

Fair enough I forgot about that. I can’t remember if I even saw his DSOTR episode actually. His cause of death seems to differ depending on where you read. His brother Johnny says pneumonia was the official cause of death on the autopsy report but he doesn’t rule out a blood clot being a factor as well. Around 2:40 here…

Listening to him say Candido took pills (again, against doctor’s advice) to help him sleep when he got home after the surgery and they were given to him by Tammy…man, seems like the whole thing could’ve been so easily avoided if they handled it differently.

Also the story Cornette told about Buddy crashing into the back of Butch Reed’s car when they were in Mid South because he was too busy looking at a girl and combing his hair in the mirror. Thankfully nobody got hurt but just the image of that is ridiculous to me.

I had a memory of hearing or reading a couple of times over the years that there was talk of him wrestling Lance Storm on the first One Night Stand. But looking it up now, I can’t find anything backing that up other than Johnny saying he thinks it was in the plans here…

But he could be mistaken or misremembering it. Thinking back, I know they had guys like Sabu, Awesome and Tanaka on there but it’s probably unlikely they’d have given Candido the Lance Storm match over Chris Jericho at the time. Not even sure he’d have appeared on the show actually considering Shane Douglas and Bam Bam didn’t.
