SpykeDudlei1 Posted February 27, 2025 Posted February 27, 2025 (edited) Slight spoiler warning but only in the sense that if, like me, you’ve never seen this because it’s taken me until now to finally get around to watching the WWF Wrestling Classic. Wow! That was tough going for the most part. The 16-man format in a standard 2.5-3 hour show was always going to be a recipe for offbeat shenanigans, quick finishes and byes but it goes beyond that as far as madness. None more so than JYD’s quick squash of Moondog Spot by pinfall…despite the complete absence of a referee! The stoppage finish to the Davey Boy/Steamboat match was ludicrous because the rope-crotching by DBS is something that even back then was seen semi-regularly and there was nothing at the time the bell was called for to suggest he was damaged beyond the point of being able to complete the match. That said, considering it was a sub-three min match it was enjoyable for what little we got of it. Then there was the finish in the Santana/Muraco match where seemingly Muraco got the pinfall win and the bell rang before “Chico” gets up, small packages Big Don and the ref counts the pin. Turns out TS had his foot on the bottom rope but the referee, who like so many back then just looked completely lost and out of his depth, didn’t bother signalling that it had happened. Also didn’t help that the camera positioned ringside and closest to the action was so close it didn’t actually clearly show any such foot-on-rope action. Farcical. And then there was the final. Heel Savage has to wrestle four times against the likes of Steamboat and Dynamite (as well as Ivan Putski) whilst JYD had 2 very short matches and then a bye from the semis to the final. Oh and it’s a count-out finish to crown JYD the winner. A COUNT-OUT!!! Who’s booking this shit?!? Away from the in-ring action, in a pre-cursor to the role played by the more-engaged and animated Vanna White for the tournament board at WM4, they had a seemingly unknown blonde woman named “Susan” who had a permanently vacant look in her eyes and allowed Lord Alfred Hayes - at perhaps his most cringeworthy worst - to act so shockingly pervy towards her that even for the mid-1980s this seems uncomfortable viewing. Maybe more so with the power of hindsight. He was one step away from dry-humping her leg at one point in proceedings. Also, at one stage Vinny Mac creepily suggests to her that they might be able to arrange for her to take a ride in the Rolls Royce that is being given away in a competition/sweepstake (yeah, there was that too!) they’ve been running. Susan - let it be said - brings absolutely NOTHING to the proceedings at all, often responding with one word answers. And just to make sure they could try to brainwash the TV viewing audience, they wheeled out Mean Gene to join Gorilla & Jesse for the final so he could play company shill and talk about it being the ‘greatest event ever seen’ or something of the like. We often reminisce a little misty-eyed about simpler times and how great things were back then as well as how today is too slick or booked terribly with no logic. I remember my dad taking me to an event there in the early 90's and it must have been more than a House Show as they had a full comms team(I know Heenan was there), and they did a Yoko/Fuji interview in ring that hardly anyone in the arena could hear? Sorry if its off topic, but Ive always wondered what this show was I attended? Quote

You saw Yoko do a pinfall job to Hacksaw, lucky you! The rest of the tour had Yoko beating him and Narcissist getting pinned by Mr Perfect. Quote

It always threw me as at the time the big thing on TV was that nobody had taken Yoko off his feet, but I had seen Duggen do that very thing. Confused the hell out of young 100% believer me! Quote

With Tatanka having only been pinned by Ludvig Borga on telly, I saw him schoolboy rolled-up and pinned by Bam Bam and suddenly the world didn't make sense. It was like seeing Undertaker lose, that level of "impossible" to child_raid. Quote
