This all seems to have stemmed from using the word “Disaster” to describe the calamitous structure of the company, and the running of the company, not the product the company produces. I hope I’ve clarified what that meant to me.

Agreed. It seems all very black & white for some reason. It's as if AEW turning a profit means that the absolutely ridiculous culture that exists within the company cannot be a bad thing.

It is a bad thing. Anyone who looks at how Tony Khan runs things for the most part, and the positions of power held by people like Omega and the Bucks and thinks it's a recipe for extended business success is mental.

Today it's Punk, and AEW fans can all point the finger at the moaning-faced grey-bearded twat as the villain, but the situation that this all became, and the people involved, would suggest that there's an awful lot to be learned by all parties. Especially the leadership group in AEW.

It'll happen again. Because despite any television successes, it still looks like Tony Khan doesn't know how to manage people. And as the leader of a company that relies heavily on people he really needs that ability to keep those egos and issues in check.

I'm a fan of AEW, by the way. I'm not wanting them to fail, because having them around provides options for the talent, which is a nice change from years gone by post-WCW. But they need to clean up how shit is done behind the scenes. You can't have three Executive Vice Presidents suspended for a backstage fucking brawl.

And no amount of anti-WWE/pro AEW chatter to the contrary will change that.

If you can tell me other than the title of EVP and benefits that come from being an employee, what exactly do they have power over? Omega's got something to do with games.

What’s the point of giving them the title if it’s meaningless? Jobs for the boys? Trying to be their mate? Creating a completely unnecessary and damaging hierarchy among staff?

And yet it constantly got lolTNA thrown at it.  Looking back, there was probably quite an element of sexism surrounding Dixie Carter - anyone who met her even briefly at a show would have been impressed by her.

While Dixie Carter certainly had to deal with sexism. lolTNA was firmly entrenched in the wrestling culture thanks to Jarrett & Russo long before Dixie Carter became strongly tied to the company. Panda Energy was the name thrown out there as the finance into the the mid-2000s.

Getting them to commit to the company.

Well, the title of Executive Vice-President means they should have power and say over a lot of things. First of all, the role itself is second only to the actual President of the company.

EVPs tend to hold control over issues such as developing strategic goals for the company, managing corporate relationships, identifying business opportunities, heading up planning to drive revenues, and so forth. They should be helping to negotiate contracts, and most importantly should possess excellent leadership and communication skills.

Unless you're suggesting they aren't really EVPs and the titles mean absolutely fuck all, of course? In which case, I direct you back to my concern over the corporate culture at AEW, where under-qualified individuals are handed senior management roles that actually mean nothing.

Why isn’t it given to all employees who sign contracts?

Definitely not.

Haven't a clue. No one's been able to tell me what the role for them is beyond the title.

To put the EVP role into perspective, we can look at the recently appointed EVPs WWE (boo! hiss!) have brought in.

Dan Ventrelle. A qualified attorney who was previously at the LA Raiders, and played a huge role in their relocation to Vegas, including the sanctioning of their almost $2 billion stadium.

Maurice F. Edelson. Former general counsel at The Juilliard School in New York City and formerly served as executive vice president and general counsel of Time Inc.

Neither of them have experience in loosening the teeth of lovable canines though.

Sounds like Sniffs played an absolute blinder there. Give some self important  marks for themselves a meaningless job title without having to compensate them financially. What a bunch of idiots! I hope the other staff take the piss out of them relentlessly for that. “Oooh Mr EVP, I hardly ever appear on TV but have the exact same footing within the company as you” That’s absolutely hilarious and tragic! They’re Milk Monitors!

When AEW started the titles definitely weren't meaningless. The EVPs were heavily involved and they were given the titles/positions to sway them into signing there instead of WWE and also to have people with wrestling experience in senior positions when putting the company together. They definitely had a lot of say during the first six months or so of the company.

However pretty much all their power and responsibilities have been stripped since then and from most accounts they are now EVPs in name only.

Seems to be a trend, actually. It would appear that Brandon Cutler is the "Executive Content Producer", Jericho is a "producer and creative advisor" Curry Man is the "VP of talent relations" and QT Marshall is "Vice President of Show and Creative Coordination."

Jobs for the boys indeed.

Given the ego of the berks it sounds like it’s easier to just keep the job title on them if that’s the case. They’d probably have a tanty if it was removed, despite it being totally meaningless.

Yeah I think that’s the most disappointing thing for me. Wrestling is rotten and when AEW started it really sounded like it was making the industry better with things like contracts and health care. But it seems to be a bit like Labour under Kier Starmer now. Sure, it’s better than the tories but not by much and is still absolutely shit despite promising much more.

I'm not sure that matters. I don't see why Punk would make this up. While he does have a track record of being someone who feels aggrieved quite easily, it tends to be real world events that set him off. It's not like dogs don't have a habit of rushing up to a door when someone is coming, excited to see who is coming to say hello. It feels entirely plausible that they barged through the door, and it struck Larry. A complete accident, obviously - but I'm sure Punk wouldn't have seen it this way.

Why does someone have to be lying? I think people are getting a little too hung up on the phrasing used around how the door was opened. Ultimately, the EVPs of the company going after an employee is more than enough ammo for Punk to use; making up a story about his dog accidentally being struck seems pretty pointless.

“Going after” is two evps, head of legal/HR and talent relations going to speak to an employee, which by all accounts now he has an employee contract, to discuss a serous infraction that took place. This was business, not a gang hit which you seem to be pushing for it to be despite there being no evidence for from any account other than this mystery source taking to wrestlinginc last night just as the video was played. I don’t even think the story has come from punk, it’s Someone claiming to be close making up fibs to stir this kinda chat. And it’s worked

For me, it's the difficulty in taking them seriously, and taking Tony Khan seriously as a CEO when they're handing out corporate titles as if they're wrestling championships.
