How did Bamgbose do?

Got battered in round one.

He was looking decent at the very start, moving well and looking confident in the striking. Then he either threw a kick and slipped or Hall caught his kick and tripped him, something like that, and from there Hall pounded him out with punches on the ground.

Speed-watched this. (Basically winding forward to the finish of anything I wasn't interested in - 90% of it - and just watching the stuff that seemed worth it).

Micheal Johnson got absolutely robbed by the judges. I had Dariush winning the third round, but the first two were clearly for Johnson. Terrible decision.

Rest of the show was pretty forgettable I thought. Agree with Wand: the Rosholt fight looked like two out of shape lumps having a brawl outside a pub. The Nunes fight was probably the highlight because at least now there's something, potentially, on the horizon for Ronda. Ronda's got herself into a position now though where she'll probably fight a lot of challengers that aren't quite ready. You can see people like Nunes getting rushed to a title shot just because there's nobody else for Ronda to fight. Kinda like Mighty Mouse with Horiguchi and probably Cejudo.

(Obviously that's assuming she beats Tate again).

Nunes is a fucking monster on her feet, from a striking perspective she can definitely hang with Ronda. However, I just can't see her avoiding being flung onto her head.

I still think of the current women, Zingano has the best shot at Ronda despite the first outcome, followed by Nunes.

To add, this is probably the first ever UFC fight night where I haven't watched a single shred of footage, whether it's youtube vids/interviews, or post fight highlights.

In the moment I thought the Johnson/Dariush decision was the worst I'd seen since Pearson/Sanchez. Having watched it again I still think Johnson clearly won, but I'm a bit less outraged. Lots of jabs to the body in there, and I guess the judges felt like a lot of Johnson's work was more nuisance, distancing stuff than actual damage. Completely wrong, especially considering Dariush is the only one who was ever hurt in the fight, but whatever. A loss like this isn't super damaging when you have Dana screaming from the rooftops how horrrible the decision was. I'm sure they'll match him up okay for next time.

Happy for Glover's win, but I have to say I'm a bit turned around on OSP. I used to find him a massive bore but he does look a different fighter these days. He uses his athleticism to explode into strikes much better, rather than just using his size to fight from distance the whole time. And he seemed okay in his pre-fight and post-fight interviews.

I wonder what they'll do with Nunes. There's a need to "protect" viable challengers to Ronda but we're getting so far down the rankings list that you can't just be giving title shots out to people ranked #7 and below without good reason. Maybe if she derails the Holly Holm hype train? I don't know. Ronda's dominance has left that division in a very weird place.

Sunday Fight Night coming up next...

putlf.jpg

FOX SPORTS 1 MAIN CARD

Max Holloway vs Charles Oliveira

Erick Silva vs Neil Magny

Patrick Cote vs Josh Burkman

Chad Laprise vs Francisco Trinaldo

Olivier Aubin-Mercier vs Tony Sims

Valerie Letourneau vs Maryna Moroz

FOX SPORTS 1 PRELIMS

Sam Stout vs Frankie Perez

Yves Jabouin vs Felipe Arantes

Nikita Krylov vs Marcos Rogerio De Lima

Chris Beal vs Chris Kelades

FIGHT PASS PRELIMS

Shane Campbell vs Elias Silverio

Misha Cirkunov vs Daniel Jolly

Now that's more like it!

It's not the best Fight Night you'll ever see on paper but it's pretty fucking good. Certainly a vast improvement on the Nashville card.

They're off to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in Canada for this one.

9APmO.jpg

A place I've only even heard of because it's where Bret Hart won his first WWF World Title against Ric Flair in 1992.

Anyway...

Holloway vs Oliveira is a brilliant main event. It's two young fighters but they're both experienced and hugely talented. And they're crossing paths just at the time when they both appear to be really firing on all cylinders and potentially breaking into that next level in the featherweight division.

It's such an exciting fight. I'm a big fan of Holloway. Have been for a long time. I think he's got absolute bags of promise and he's still young. He's fought some good guys and had some setbacks early in his career, but he's gained experience along the way and he's looking phenomenal right now. Since losing to Conor McGregor in 2013, he's gone 6-0 with 5 finishes. And his last fight was his most impressive win yet, completely dominating Cub Swanson in the striking and then submitting him with a guillotine late in the fight.

A proper breakthrough performance. And it was on the main card on FOX. Huge for Holloway. His biggest win on the biggest platform he's been on in his career. He's still only 23 years old as well.

Charles Oliveira is another guy I'm a fan of. I don't like him as much as I like Holloway but he's been a highlight of any card he's been on for a while for me now. A name I'm always glad to see on a card. He's also on an impressive win streak. He's gone 4-0 with 3 finishes since he dropped a decision to Frankie Edgar in 2013. He's shown improvement in his striking and wrestling in recent fights, to go with his awesome BJJ. Like Holloway, he's a threat in all areas. He's coming off a submission in his rematch with Nik Lentz, one of the better (and more overlooked) fights so far this year.

I love this fight. It's two young fighters on the cusp of becoming legit contenders, both skilled and aggressive in every aspect of MMA, both with momentum. It really is a fight worth getting excited about.

Co-main, Story vs Silva is another potential barnburner. This was originally supposed to go down in June on the Machida vs Romero card but Silva had visa issues and the fight was pulled. I'm so glad they re-booked it rather than go in different directions with these two, because this should be fantastic.

Erick Silva just doesn't do boring fights. He's either going to knock you out quick or it's going to be a dogfight. He doesn't know how to fight any other way, it seems. People say 'styles make fights' but Erick Silva's style seems to make great fights with everyone.

And Story is an animal. Strong as fuck, good wrestler, good submissions, power in his hands. He's often underappreciated but if you look at his record he was the first man to beat Johny Hendricks, he beat Thiago Alves and he's the only man to beat Gunnar Nelson. He fucking dominated Gunnar as well, totally shut him down. You can't sleep on a guy like that.

It's a really good fight, this. I can see Story trying to grapple this one out but Silva's had some of his most exciting fights with guys who wanted to grapple. He even dragged an stupidly exciting fight out of Jon Fitch! Should be good.

Rest of the main card has a bit of a Canada vs The World theme...

Cote vs Burkman could've been on a Fight Night in 2007. I like this fight more now though. I think it's a better matchup now than it would've been then. Neither guy is making much noise at welterweight but I think they've both improved overall as fighters in recent years. They've just kind of got lost in the shuffle due the depth of the UFC's 170 division. Burkman in particular has been really fun to watch since his UFC return. He came out on the losing end but I really liked his fights with Lombard and Stun Gun a lot.

The two TUF Nations winners Laprise and Aubin-Mercier are on the card. I think Laprise is up against it here though, I think he's got his work cut out with Trinaldo.

And Letourneau vs Moroz is an interesting one. Nice clash of styles. Letourneau has a decent striking game from what I remember. Good boxing and moves well. Moroz is clearly more of a grappler, bunch of subs on her record and she's coming off the upset win over Calderwood. I'm intrigued by Moroz, if for no other reason than she had the guts to call out Joanna Jedrzejczyk, in Poland, after her debut!

Prelims are OK, I guess. Nowt special. Actually, Beal vs Kaledas on Fight Pass is probably my pick of the bunch. Beal had one of the best KOs of 2014 with an incredible flying knee. And Kelades beat Paddy Holohan on short notice last year, and looked impressive doing it. Good little fight.

I like this one. I can take or leave the two TUF Nations guys fights but I'm well into the rest of that main card.

ahhh damn it, Story/Silva was a quality fight on paper.

I planned on watching the UFC today cause i was away all weekend but i saw a spoiler on fight pass...they really should hide the spoilers better. Not too bothered, i'll watch Glory instead.

Gutted about Silva vs Story. And Magny as replacement doesn't really excite me much. Then again, like I said;

People say 'styles make fights' but Erick Silva's style seems to make great fights with everyone.

Really looking forward to this. Just shit that it's on a Sunday night and I can't really stay up to watch it.

Little bit surprised no-one's voted for Oliveira in the poll, but Holloway is on fire at the moment and riding high off the Swanson win so it's understandable. It's a great fight. I'd give Holloway the edge on the feet and Oliveira the edge on the ground. But they're both really good everywhere it's going to be competitive wherever the fight goes.

I've got Holloway to win on points or a TKO in the later rounds. But one mistake and I could definitely see Oliveira catching him in a submission. Even as good as Holloway is on the ground, Oliveira's a crafty little bastard.
