Davey Richards issues statement on the Iowa incident

Just watching this shoot he's done and it's gotten to the unintentionally funny stuff on the topic of Steen. Davey compares himself to guys like Joe and Gibson in terms of athleticism, training yadada, in some attempt to make the contrast with Steen who relies on blogs and stuff (this is Davey's viewpoint). He has a go at Steen for being out of shape or whatever, and that because he himself is fitter, he's better and deserves to be champion. Steen did a pretty great job then of being the most interesting thing in ROH for the last year and a half despite not being able to do cross country :p

I can kind of see his ideology about being a real athlete being important in ROH which has always counted with its history of guys from Danielson, Ki and Joe putting on long, hard-hitting matches; but it was the way they were booked and marketed, which fitted in with the company establishing themselves in those early years as the anti-WWE company, as well as the fact that in their own ways, they are charismatic and have distinct personalities which come through in the ring (hence why they've gone on to good-awesome things in TNA and WWE where you need to show personality).

He seems to miss the point entirely when it comes to pro-wrestling. If Steen can get himself over through promos (whether that be the new way to cut a promo in 2012 via fan footage on YouTube) and as a result, illicit a live response in a building without having to work super stiff and kill himself, surely that's a good thing in terms of longevity, safety for your opponent, saving stuff so you can progress in terms of spots over time, etc? Bret would have a field day listening to Davey's philosophy.

Davey comes off as what happens when young guys break in having watched early ROH and bought in to their marketing. If he wants to aspire so his character is "boring, super serious stiff worker" then he's got it nailed, and could do well in WWE as an ignorant heel, with that Smart Mark puppet from Are You Serious a few weeks back as his manager.

EDIT: Having finished it, one of the main problems is that Davey treats this as if it were one of those "real" promos ROH do before an IPPV main event and it's a chance to build his character or hype a fight, or at least that's what I come away feeling like. Probably doesn't help that he's not left the business, nor that he's going through a transitional period of some sort (like a period where a WWE guy gets released and vents on a shoot). I saw the ANX did a similar shoot with Highspots, which may be more interesting seeing as King has actually left now.

Adam Pearce's take on it is probably the smartest you'll read.

This week, an incident that took place on an independent wrestling event in Iowa has caused a debate. As seen in this video (link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JPMp86PRrzU),

This is a work, right?

If you don't take this shit as serious as Tony, then there is NO place for you in pro-wrestling!!!!!

AMBITION!!!

What the fuck was that shit I just watched?

Did Davey Richards actually try to act and show emotion? And why does Tony Kozina look like a deranged smackhead?

Kyle really needs to work on burning off the darbs on him too.

Long live Team ArseBandits.

Kozina thought the kid needed to teach a lesson in respect? Have to wonder if anyone feels the need to teach Davey some respect in that you don't rip off promoters, make yourself look a complete cunt for the world to see and generally be a tool?

This seems like a complete work for the internet age.

Kazina didn't seem to rough the kid up that bad. If anything, he put him over well. The kid didn't capitalise on it particularly well. The woman in the crowd was very much into it, but he was caught in the headlights. That's natural for anyone new in the business, especially at 16. He was kicking out of a lot. He couldn't look too conpetitive or it'd look silly considering the size difference and the dynamic of the 'real' wrestling match. It made him show some heart though. I don't agree with 'those were all fake - this is real' though.

Your PepperPlunge shitness is really beginning to shine through now, isn't it? Is your girlfriend still diddling herself over Kanye West pictures?
