Crazy fact about Invicta 8. Nobody was sure how old Yasuko Tamada was; turns out she's 47. I'm not sure whether to be impressed or mortified given the fact she got slaughtered for fifteen minutes.

really? fucking hell. Some strange matchmaking going down in Invicta.

Ahh BAMMA's streaming live the same time as the Cage Warriors show on Premier and the Matchroom boxing show on Sky. What to watch??

Don't really watch any of the other shows. But might keep an eye out anyways.

Im not too interested in Newton v Beltran as the fight kind of baffles me.

Most interesting thing for me this weekend is Liam McGeary. Been impressing a lot recently but doesn't seem to be talked about at all. Hopefully he can win this tournament and see how he gets on against Newton (who I suspect will beat Beltran). Hopefully then some hype may start with him.

yep, McGeary's been one of the finds of the year, he's still flying under the radar but if he wins tomorrow he's one fight away from being the champ...exciting fighter but who knows what happens when things go down the stretch. He's fighting a wrestler tomorrow so we may find out.

McGeary on tomorrow's title fight:

“I want to see Emanuel Newton to beat the s–t out of Joey Beltran,” he said of Bellator 124’s title headliner. “Everyone knows that guy doesn’t deserve a shot at the title. I want Emanuel to beat the s–t out of him and then I’m going to fight Emanuel. Then I’m going to run a clinic on him as well. He’s seen what I’ve been doing to people so he needs to step his game up a bit, because I’m f–king coming for all of them. I’m going to do the same exact thing to every last one of them.”

Coker explained that they are doing Newton/Beltran basically to give Newton a fight, he blames the situation on the tournament format because basically there's no contender lined up. It's meant to be Newton vs. Rampage but Jackson has said he's not interested in the title and he won't fight Newton (who's a friend), doesn't really say much for the Bellator title does it?

But outside of Rampage they were pretty much out of options, obviously after tomorrow night the next challenger will be set so if they didn't see up the Beltran fight Newton would sitting out for a long time.

Beltran's a gamer though so it should make for an exciting fight regardless...it's also the kind of fight that Newton should be winning convincingly if he's to prove to people that's he's legit world class.

From what i can tell, she's ranked top 10, maybe even top 5 in the division. Remember, Randy Couture was almost 48 when he fought Machida. I think it's like that one armed guy that got beat up in WSOF, it looks bad if you don't know the context, like what did they think would happen, but he and presumably she were reasonably credible contenders.

oh Newell was no doubt a credible contender, i couldn't help but feel sorry for him when Gaethje smashed his face in though :(

It’s time for Bellator 124 where Bellator looks to match the UFC for the most unmarketable title challenger of the year

Tommy Bagnasco (159lbs, 3-2) vs. Ryan Couture (155.5lbs, 8-3) opens up the main card and is a Catchweight fight due to Bagnasco being unable to make weight, though he has a valid excuse as he is a late replacement. Couture wins a short and unremarkable fight, neither fighter does anything that stands out.

Zeilton Rodrigues (135lbs, 12-3) vs. LC Davis (135,9, 21-6) started with some wild striking before Davis took the fight to the ground. Davis did a good job of controlling Rodrigues, though how much of that was down to skill and how much was down to grabbing the fence is up to you; once he did it a second time, and it was clearly intentional both times, Davis should have had a point taken off. Rodrigues kept going for a heel hook or ankle lock off the bottom but couldn’t pull it off and there was a nice transition of positions from both fighters. The second round was more of the same; Davis taking Rodrigues down early, with Rodrigues constantly going for a heel hook or ankle lock but not having the positioning to pull it off as Davis was able to defend against it or otherwise keep control of Rodrigues. It was the same story in the third, with Davis taking Rodrigues down early and controlling him from there, and Rodrigues working for submissions from the bottom but unable to get anything close. Davis dominates from beginning to end but not necessarily standing out in the process, though I put that down to his opponent not showing much diversity when working off his back.

Kelly Anundson (206lbs, 9-2) vs. Liam McGeary (204.6lbs, 8-0) is the Light Heavyweight tournament final and was a really good one round fight that, unusually for a McGeary fight was almost all on the ground. Anundson managed to get McGeary down early despite eating a knee in the process. Anundson was in top position, either in the guard or in half-guard, but McGeary was no slouch off his back and either kept going for an Americana off his back, which he had on well enough to have Anundson yelping in pain, or throwing his legs up for an armbar or a triangle. Anundson wasn’t just taking it, though, as he kept landing some nice elbows and going for submissions of his own, including a head/arm triangle. In the end, it was McGeary who pulled out the win from the bottom by throwing his long legs up and catching Anundson in an inverted triangle choke while Anundson was in side-control and getting the submission. McGeary now gets a title shot and I actually like his chances against Emmanuel Newton.

Bellator Light Heavyweight Champion Emmanuel Newton © (203.6lbs, 23-7-1) vs. Joey Beltran (204.1lbs, 15-10) was the main event of the evening for the Bellator Light Heavyweight title. Newton comes out to the DX theme. It was something of a sluggish first round with a lot of clinching that resulted in even more nothing happening. Both fighters landed strikes and Newton was able to press Beltran against the cage a lot, but other than that, not much of note actually happened. The second round was a lot better but we’re grading on a curve here; both fighters started to open up and go for more strikes, with Newton switching stances a lot as Beltran moved forward a lot more, was more aggressive, and took the round. It’s hard to be sure but Newton was looking tired mid-way through this round. The third round was rather slow and saw Beltran outboxing and outkicking Newton, who looked like he had nothing to offer and only had his eye on spinning attacks; luckily for Newton, it paid off at 3:08 of the third, landing a spinning backfist that knocked Beltran out cold. As a fight, this was decent, but not outstanding, and neither fighter looked that good, both men looking very tired heading into the third and Newton was very limited in his thinking in the third round because it was clear he was only thinking about landing a spinning strike. It paid off for him this time around but he looked uninspiring before the finish and if he fights Liam McGeary like this, Newton is toast.

Not the greatest nights of action and not a great showing from one of Bellator’s champions in the main event. Hopefully, we’ll get some excitement from Melvin Manhoef next week to make up for what was, overall, a very dour night.

standard kind of show capped off with two unbelievable finishes...

In all fairness to Joey Beltran he did better against Emmanuel Newton than i think most people expected, if you show Newton too much respect from the outside you're gonna find yourself frustrated against his awkward-as-fuck style, Beltran showed him no respect and just marched forward implying his usual game, i had it a round a piece and had Beltran winning round 3 before...

DisguisedFlusteredEel.gif

Beltran's confidence and lack of respect ended up being his undoing... Beltran had the right idea he just got caught with a spinning backfist from hell. Newton didn't look impressive, and his spinning shit was failing miserably all night until the finish but that unorthodox nature of his style makes him a compelling watch.

...i'd bet the farm on Liam McGeary taking him out to become the next champion though.

McGeary found himself victim of a double leg but he was all go from the bottom, Anundson got the fight where he wanted it but McGeary was doing all kinds of freaky shit from the bottom and probably should have got the finish a little sooner because there were like 3 audible screams during them americana attempts, usually thats enough to prompt a ref to jump in....then the lanky fuck lands an inverted triangle! McGeary's money, guy has the potential to be a big deal in MMA.

a KO of the year and a Submission of the year candidate on one show, not bad!

Who do people have for Doug Marshal vs. Melvin Manhoef? Manhoef hits harder but his chin has been cracked so many times that he's likely in Gary Goodridge territory down the line. It's probably not lasting long but you'd think it should be explosive while it does last.

i don't think it goes longer than a minute and it literally is a case of who lands first. Technically, Manheof is  the more superior fighter but they both have destructive power and Marshall won't cower away, he'll be throwing.

I very slightly favour Manheof though.

Liam McGeary is a beast, even on his back he was always attacking and looking to finish. I'm pretty confident he'll be winning that title.

I'd say Manheof with a first round TKO/KO. Shouldn't be any feeling out process between those two, just trading shots until one of them drops.

yeh, i love a guy who fights with no fear off his back. Those long, lanky guys are nightmares when they are active from the bottom it give fighters a really unique advantage...Ben Saunders and Kendall Grove for example.

Condit and the Diaz brothers as well.

Ben Saunders has the most fun guard/bottom game to watch in all of MMA for me. I doubt he can be as effective with it against the top 10-15 in the division but his attacking guard is great to watch.

I hope I'm wrong but I've got a feeling Marshall will catch Manhoef. But I always get the feeling my favourites are going to lose. I always expect the worst. Cushions the blow when it does happen, and if they win it's a nice surprise. Realistically though, it's really a tossup. Manhoef is vastly superior technically and he's quicker. But there's something to be said for a tough and fearless slugger like Marshall, being a good counter to that. Just got a feeling it's going to be a minute of mayhem and if it becomes a battle of chins, I'll go with Marshall. Hope Manhoef wrecks him though.

I think thats the first time Ive seen an Americana attempt from that position. How was he able to pull that off, when seemingly it must be almost impossible to do so? Was it just bad top position from Anundson allowing him the space to do it?

I think that was also the quickest Ive ever seen someone tap to a triangle, as well. I initially thought he must have had an armbar as well, but he didnt. About one second after it was locked in, he tapped. Strange.

How banged up is Manhoef these days? The last thing I remember him doing was destorying Robbie Lawlers leg, and that was 4 years ago. Judging from his Wiki, hes been KO'd quite a few times since then, and hes now 38. Marshall is a beast when stirking, so I think he has a great chance of winning. More importantly, its surely a fight that's impossible to be bad.

yeh Manheof was KO'd in a kickboxing match a month or so back. He's always had that fight or die mentality, he doesn't know any other way.
