  1. Yeah Rings of Power is not good. I watched all of it just in case. There's good characters and fun scenes but the overarching plot (no spoilers) is poor and has the distinct sense of being written week to week. What will not stand up to rewatches is the 'guess who the baddy is' strand. Yeah.

  2. Excellent writeup @FelatioLipsthough your order is wack, man.

If you're so inclined the making of the Hobbit on the boxset is surprisingly honest, with Jackson visibly frustrated throughout (and eventually having a heart attack and losing 6 stone) , McKellen close to a breakdown, and showing Desolation music cues being edited mere hours before the premiere. The whole production was a total nightmare and while nowhere near perfect it's amazing they are vaguely coherent at all.

Worth watching for the origin of the phrase "jam bags" alone.

know the WWE's digital archive is incredibly well looked after and preserved

There were some PPV shows where WWE's own masters were ruined or unavailable, therefore transferred from a home VHS copy. I can't remember which shows but I'm sure one of my old colleagues will chip in with what they are...

So not everything is as well preserved as you would think in their archive.

This technically fits this thread (because it is funny among many other things) but Hbomberguy's latest video on plagiarism is absolutely outstanding. I mean, I barely knew of a lot of the people and issues talked about in it, yet at no point was I lost. The guy's just great.

It's an incredible piece of work and I reckon will tip the conversation on YouTube on plagiarism.

I'd also recommend his ROBLOX.OOF video which is not really anything to do with Roblox and instead features a character who is pure carny that Vince should've signed in '98. That video was so good that when Hbomberguy' s latest launched at 1.30am I started watching it immediately.

    Nice one @Onyx2 :)

Thanks! Trussell Trust have already endorsed it, bless 'em.

The most egregious part was that I wanted the end segment to play out with just a link to Trussell Trust and nothing else, but YouTube doesn't allow you to have an external link by itself on those end frames. So I have to link back to another video and look self serving in the process. Oh well.

  6. Not that I ever held any aspirations of being so, but I've always idly dreamed that if I ever became a director I'd track down the rights to James Clavell's Shogun and make a new version of it. When I was 17 I was obsessed with this book. It hasn't aged well, unsurprisingly, but I don't need to imagine any more.

I can't trust an actor called 'Cosmo Jarvis', can I? The rest of the cast looks great.

A great little documentary on one of the best Mega Drive games, I originally had an earlier version in a double pack with Madden which this goes into a little, too.

Everything by Noclip is very well made. They recently bought a job lot of old games show footage, trailers and other random shit and are digitising and uploading to their second "channel" :

Been suffering with incredibly bad heartburn/acid reflux recently.

There isn't one solution. I've had acid reflux all my life, and I highly recommend this book to help diagnose which type you have:

Coping Successfully with Hiatus Hernia https://amzn.eu/d/hXLHX5K

Sometimes it's diet, sometimes it's a sleeping issue, sometimes there is psychological reason, sometimes it's a slight misalignment of the oesaphagus (this is my issue and very complex to fix with surgery). I have to watch what I eat, but more importantly when.

Read up about it, but expect to talk to a consultant for a true diagnosis. Bad news: a friend of mine has been working towards a solution for over a year, a miserable yoghurt and water filled year.

But lay off the Krunchi puffs anyway.

I really enjoyed it. I love how much piss it's going to boil.

My thoughts exactly. I giggled as they discussed pronouns, simply because I could foresee the frothing gammon. If they didn't like a woman doctor...

I really enjoyed the episode. Back to cosy, fun, family programming rather than up-its-own-arse fanwankery.

If nothing else, it’s great to see how far we’ve come from when it would be Red T-shirts vs. Blue T-shirts. What a motley crew.

Listening to Small Gods at the minute. First Pratchett one I've picked up. Really enjoying it! Scouse accent for Om is inspired. I don't particularly like the way the footnotes have been executed though. The pause is too long and kinda takes you out of it.

This is one that I've never read the book of, so will be interesting to see how I feel when I listen to one I already know.

Keen to hear your thoughts, @Onyx2

Now Spotify have them I've been able to listen to some Pratchett. And I had to start where it all began for me, with Mort.

I was ten years old when I read Mort. It is not an exaggeration to say reading it changed my life, from the way I phrase sentences, to imprinting on my philosophy, to having to drag an enormous collection of hardbacks from house to house.

I can't have read it in over 20 years. Maybe not this century. But I found I could recite acres and acres of it verbatim along with the audiobook. It was a genuinely moving experience to revisit.

Serafinowicz is of course incredible. The right amount of superiority and distance, while still being vulnerable. Sian Clifford is a delight, full of brilliant voices and each is well characterised.

Not struck on Bill Nighy but it's a small thing.

Can't wait to listen to others. Any recommendations for next (to be clear, for the performances, I know the stories!)?

I am disgusted at that revelation @Onyx2. On behalf of all Punjabi's I condemn you.

    Carry on as you were.

My work were doing a BYO 'food of black origin' event organised by the race and diversity committee. Many people asked if I was going to bring something, but how could I, as the most Warburtons of white men whose lineage has never left the Eastern counties of England as far as I can tell, rock up with his goat jollof? "This is how you do it."

  13. Many thanks @Carbomb @Keith Houchen. I wouldn't post that recipe anyway as it's oddly specific and not for everyone. Fun fact, the fried egg in the thumbnail is an AI image.

@tiger_rick here is Heston's base vanilla recipe I usually start from:

Would I be ok just adding mango purée to base gravy as a substitute? It wouldn’t be the same but could it work with a few spices?

In a helpless and hopeless piece of cultural appropriation, I often add mango chutney to my curries just before I add say, tinned tomatoes (I did this only last week). You could then cook this all out to taste, blend then return to the pan for finishing. You get the mangoeyness (real word, look it up) plus additional spicing.

Is the B&J book good? I had no idea of its existence, may have to track it down.

The ice cream looks pretty good Rick, I've never tried making my own but think I may give it a go

It's much better than you think it would be, with lots of discussion about what goes into good ice cream and company history too. I got mine in a charity shop. There are plenty of second hand copies floating around eg WOB

Go check out Polar Ice Creamery on YouTube who really knows his stuff and likes to make B&J knock offs.

  15. I bought that book this year from a charity shop Rick. Even if you don't make the ice cream the cookie recipe is really good.

B&J ice cream base recipe is nice, but I find a prefer a custard-base ice cream. More creamy and luxurious, though ruinously fattening.
