Ah yes, I knew I'd been getting one of the ingredients of a BLT wrong all these years.

Edit: gives me an excuse to post one of my favourite videos

    I didn’t know that!

This is a great recipe from our very own @Onyx2  I always remember the first time I took his sweet pork in my mouth and it exploded with flavour all over my tongue.

How have neither of these gone in No Context yet?

I'd forgotten that recipe. Genuinely very simple recipe. Handful of ingredients easily available in any shop. And swap the protein for any you prefer, or meat substitute.

@SuperBaconmy man Adam Garratt hates fussy and difficult.

Lots of ill-defined Science. Does the irritating modern movie thing of having a character talk about time travel plots and paradoxes, only for another character to say, "it doesn't work that way, you watch too many movies" - we get it, you're aware that you're using a tired and overdone plot device, but bringing that up in the film doesn't fix it, it just reminds me that you know and you're doing it anyway.

It would be great if screenwriters would actually put the work in and research the current thinking on any of these topics rather than rehash Back to the Future or Tennant's Doctor Who. Couldn't be any easier to read up on this in Internet days.

  4. The Last of Us is sort of needing it's own thread. Plus like Game of Thrones there's two types of spoilers for those that have played the games. We're going to get into "well wait to you see what happens with Alf when he next meets Jerome....!!!" territory. Can we just ask for none of that sort of talk please?

  5. I really enjoyed you going through that Flip, thanks for sharing! Plus it's kicked off another watchthrough for me.

So a few more photos from my 2008 Sopranos tour. I have hundreds so here's just a select few. I have loads of random buildings, legs of Paul Bunyan, bridges etc but here you go:

    Spoiler

We were led by someone who was an extra in a couple of episodes. He was a lot of fun but I can't say I've ever picked him up on the show. He did say he was a waiter for Edie Falco, who kept asking him questions on camera so he would have to respond and therefore be paid a higher rate as a speaking extra. Alas the lines were cut.

Going through the New Jersey Turnpike.

    Continuing the credits theme, Pizzaland.

Meadow's school. In the show they put boxes over the real name - it's really blatant once you see it.

This church is used so often in the show it's absurd.

The diner where Chrissy is shot at the end of series 1.

The Bada Bing externals. The state of New Jersey does not allow stripping where alcohol is consumed, so all interiors were a set.

And the back of the Bing where Ralf did his hoo-er in.

And Holsten's is the diner where the final scene is filmed. Note the plaque behind.

And as a bonus: we went to watch a Knicks game at MSG the same holiday. Called out over the Tannoy was the presence of courtside regulars, Steve Schirrpa and Michael Imperioli. I have drawn arrows but they're very small!

I don't mind Mike Jeavons for entertainment, like when he spends a week eating just Greggs but is a completely inept cook which he admits himself. Basically any other youtuber would be better for air fryer recipes. Pro Home Cooks if you want some really good ones.

The fact that he's inept in the kitchen (though I don't know how given how many food challenges he's done) is why I'd recommend him; he does things that show even a fool can work with it.

Is that aimed at me? You better watch your mouth potato boy or I’ll ram that masher straight up yo ass quicker than you can lisp Dancing in the moonlight, you motherpukka.

Something something you're a Man United fan from London? Did I do it right?

@Onyx2 - I don't really disagree with what you've said, I think the only thing we differ on is whether we feel the use of it was justified in this particular series.

Yep and I think this is a great discussion without any toys leaving any prams, like SuperBacon said. Even more surprising when you consider the subject material.

I think it is handled well, but it can't be viewed without the context of the whole show around it. I will also say I've been extremely lucky in my life to not knowingly have any friends or family be a victim of rape so the trigger is distant for me.

  9. I came on to debate the Melfi rape and LaGoosh has said most of what I want. I hadn't looked at it that way before; yes it's brutal but it is supposed to be? It has to be an antagonizing incident to turn the audience bloodthirsty. And then in classic David Chase to be denied that. Like his protege Matthew Weiner proved in Mad Men, he and Chase like to write about people unable to change.

As it happens, that episode was written by Robin Green who lifted a scene from her friend's experience (consensually) into the script and later won an Emmy for it. She wanted to highlight the range of violence in American society. We're used to shootings, to stabbings, to violent punch-ups, but rape gets pushed off the screen. It's worth pointing out the episode caused controversy at the time too. In the end, Melfi shows that she takes the moral and just way by not creating more violence.

If we're saying rape is off limits unless dealt with in a certain way, is that any different to things we're 'allowed' to joke about too? If it's dealt with correctly and contextually it's fair game.

I'm totally up for warnings ahead of a programme ("this programme contains some scenes..." and "if you've been affected...") so there's fair trigger warning. But I think it should be part of modern fiction.

EDIT: didn't like the way I phrased some things.

The worst for me is the Melfi rape scene. It’s the only bit in the whole show that I skip.

That's not 'bad' though is it? It's just a tough watch because of the subject. It creates a brilliant episode because of reasons mentioned earlier.

Vito turning up in the bakery as an extra in Season 1 always had me wondering if it was actually Vito at the time or he just came back as a new character in Season 3

Different character. That's 'Gino', but when the casting call came out for Vito he came back, they remember liking him, he was in.

  12. Vito you say?

This is me in October 2008 (christ that's a long time ago) with the Captain of the Good Ship Lollipop himself Joseph Gannascoli. Mrs Onyx and I went on a Sopranos bus tour around New Jersey. As you queue to get picked up a RAV 4 comes screaming to a halt and this hustler opens his boot to shill his merch. I did buy his book (you can see it in my hand).

Looking on Trip Advisor it seems like he's still shaking down the tour every day.

I have a whole bunch of location photos but some need to wait until FL is finished.

What surprises me with the Sopranos is how few episodes some of the memorable characters appeared in. Furio for example was in 20 episodes and while that is more than some, he felt like a big character and was only in around a quarter of the series.
