  1. Few things I've done recently. Made a batch of kimchi and knocked this up for lunch: kimchi fried rice, an egg, loads of sriracha.

Obviously every bastard under the sun is a home baker now but I've genuinely been at it for years. Here's my latest standard white loaf:

  2. I've just stuck these up on eBay. Posting here in case there's any interest as I'd be delighted to be able to sell to a UKFFer.

There are a lot of personal choices we all make that directly impact other people though, isn't there? Where do we draw the line? What's an arrest-worthy offence? For what it's worth, I didn't agree with the smoking ban in pubs. I believe it should have been the call of the landlords themselves.

I don't smoke, and never have. It's a disgusting habit, and I would never frequent a pub where smoking is permitted. However, it should be the choice of the person who owns the business. If they wish to cut away a lot of their paying customers to allow smoking then that's on them.

We elect a government to make decisions for the country as a whole. Some things wouldn't change without enforcement. Are you saying there should be no speed limits, for example? Car drivers should be allowed to decide for themselves if they want to speed or not. As soon as there's a significant negative impact on people as a result of someone elses choice, then it becomes an issue for government consideration. Would we be where we are with a lack of smoking in public places if it had never been enforced? Probably not. Does the vast majority of the population support the band. Probably so. Case closed.

Thing is, it comes down to a level of personal choice, doesn't it? I actually agree that smoking is stupid, but I'd certainly fight against any government policy that would see people arrested for doing so.

But what about where that personal choice directly impacts other people? What's the difference between the government closing pubs because of the potential spread of Corona virus and the government banning smoking in public places because of the potential for cancer from passive smoking?

How on Earth is it unreasonable to tell someone you don’t want to use their hand sanitiser? You might have a skin condition or intolerance to whatever the fuck is in his bottle. You should be allowed to refuse without being removed from a taxi. I highly doubt the company has it in policy either.

Fair enough about hand conditions etc. All I mean is that I don't think it's a big deal. If someone asks you to use it when you get in their taxi then why not just use it.

I got in a taxi on Friday night, the driver turned to me and pointed hand sanitiser at me, I said “no I’m good thanks”, he then said “you can use it or get out of the car”.

At the time I just grinned and went along with it, however, I’ve been thinking a lot more about it and whilst it doesn’t bother me personally that much, he’s surely treading on some sketchy ground there isn’t he? Forcing people to rub liquid on their hands from his bottle, or they can’t have a ride.

I appreciate ‘his cab, his rules’, so things like no eating and drinking, no muddy boots, no dogs etc, but telling passengers they must use his liquid sanitiser is absolutely crackers is it not?

Why? What's the harm in doing that? Seems reasonable to me. More unreasonable would be for someone to refuse to do it when asked.

Apparently a South Korean brewery is donating some of its pure alcohol to be used in hand sanitiser production. If I was a PR exec for Corona I'd be suggesting they follow suit.

Why would a brewery have pure alcohol!?

Update: this turned out shit. Really bitter with nothing to counteract it. It just tastes like a cheap lager.

Nevermind, I’m still having a go at my own recipe. I picked up some dried malt extract and some hops yesterday, so we’ll see how that goes.

You really don't want to sieve your beer after primary fermentation is done because it'll introduce oxygen to the beer. Oxygen is death to finished beer, it'll stale it giving it a cardboard / papery flavour (best case) and green apple and acetic flavour (worst case). Sediment is fine. It'll pack down in the bottle given long enough - keep it very cold will promote this and speed it up. Otherwise it changes the flavour very little and won't cause you any harm.

In that case, the Craft Beer Co in Angel is good - lots of options and does food. Also, the Euston Tap (literally outside Euston station) is fun for tastings.

Euston Tap is good but has no food. Craft Beer Co in Angel is a good shout, yeah - loads of taps both keg and cask but again no food. The Lighterman in Granary Square has good food and has a permanent Braybrooke tap. Braybrooke make some of the best lagers in the country in my opinion. The Little Creatures brewpub in Kings Cross is pricey but good and has food. The Queens Head is a short walk from Kings Cross and it's a really great little pub - bit lesser known. Classic in feel, piano in the corner, great range. Brew House and Kitchen is another Brewpub in Angel near Craft Beer co. Ok food, ok ish beer. Sourced Deli in St Pancreas Station has a good range of local bottles and you can drink in. The Parcel Yard in King Cross station is a massive Fullers Pub with lots of their range if that's your sort of thing. They do food in there too. That's about all I can think of. If you're travelling further afield, I've got more ...

I've started to ask for the fish and the chips to be packed separately and the texture of the batter is much nicer. Stays crispier all around by the time it gets home. I look forward to being judged on this action by everyone in this thread.

Standard practice for me now, too. Not only do they stay crisper but you get a bigger chip portion. Psychologically there's something in serving chips on their own that makes the server more generous. Also you sometimes get places that will box chips when with something but put them straight in paper if on their own. That box severely impacts portion generosity in my experience.

Fuck cups. Grams and millilitres only thanks. Incidentally it appears I'm out of plain flour. Strong flour should be ok, shouldn't it?

I'd say so. Just try not to work it too much. If you develop the gluten you'll have chewy pancakes.

In short, McGregor is an all-time great in my view. He's a two weight world champ, one of the best strikers in MMA history, and has a very impressive resume of wins. He's not in the same league as GSP or Jones, but who the hell is?

Likewise, criticizing him for being schooled by Khabib doesn't really say much either. Khabib schools everyone! The fact he struggled to out-wrestle Khabib doesn't prevent you from being able to call him better than 'very good'. Jon Jones would struggle to out-wrestle Khabib and would that change your opinion on Jones?

It's a fair point about him having a carefully curated route to the top but it's worth keeping in mind that that's only true from a certain point in his career. Even then he still took the Diaz fight when he didn't need to. Like Jim says, he also took Mendes on short notice and, at that point, everyone was saying Mendes would handle him easily. The flip side is to say that nobody in the history of MMA (and few even in sport!) have carried the weight of expectation that Mcgregor has. He's had to perform under a spotlight and level of scrutiny and observation that most can only imagine ... and yet he's performed almost every time under those conditions.

If you honestly see him as just a level below the likes of Jon Jones and GSP then fair enough, but I think you're still a bit drunk on the weekends action

Has nothing to do with the weekend. I'd have said the same a week ago.

I don't think to be honest, I think we've been fair on his abilities for the most part. And it's not a case of picking on him in particular, it's just the kind of game he has. Other fighters with a real strength in one area face similar issues, but the difference between them and Conor is that most of them have to run the gamut of fighters before getting to the top.

If McGregor had been forced to run the gauntlet of the likes of Jim Miller, Nick Lentz, Al Iaquinta, Kevin Lee and so on there's virtually no way he'd have blasted through all of them. He wouldn't have lost to all of them, but there would certainly have been a few decision losses in there, and maybe even a submission loss or two.

In this era especially, it's incredibly rare for a striker to be able to come through the crowd unbeaten when they have no real ground game to speak of. McGregor, purely as a fighter, would have run into some problems against those types of fighters, as all pure strikers eventually do.

It cannot be denied that his drawing power has afforded him an easier path to the top fighters and title shots than fighters who don't draw as much. In reality he has as much right to a rematch with Khabib as Dustin Poirier does. In fact, Poirier probably has a stronger claim than McGregor does.

Before losing to Khabib Dustin put away Max Holloway, Eddie Alvarez, Justin Gaethje, Anthony Pettis and Jim Miller.

But McGregor doesn't have to face those potential threats, he gets shifted to the front of the line because he draws eyeballs.

As for the Mayweather fight, Conor lasted as long as Floyd wanted him to. The fight wasn't competitive, and Floyd was essentially playing with him, giving the fans a show for their money. He could have went in there and handled McGregor like he did Tenshin Nasukawa if he'd felt like it.

Sounds like you're judging him on the stuff he hasn't done, rather than the stuff he has done.
