i hated every second of that.
From the moment Bruce Buffer introduced Askren and "Ben Askew" you knew it was gonna end badly.
The fight was what it was, Askren looked alright for a minute then seemed to freeze. Basically invited Paul to throw that right hand.
The circus marches on, but my biggest issue was with the production. The commentary mocked everything, Oscar De La Hoya coked out of his mind. It's clearly aimed at the youtube/tiktok generation but it all felt very depressing to me. Poor Al Bernstein.
I feel dirty for having looked forward to this.
It was as far from a sporting event that a sporting even can be. Honestly it felt closer to a wrestling PPV than it did a sport PPV.

If Poirier beats McGregor, could we ever see McGregor accept a fight with Paul? It would be an easy (presumably big) pay day for McGregor and an easy way to bounce back. Perhaps Paul would do it knowing it's probably the biggest thing he'll ever do in a boxing ring.
Stranger things have happened.

Everything about that was terrible. It had a real self congratulatory feel to it. It's like Jake Paul is setting up a film set for himself to walk out on to, rather than it's a sporting event.
The shitty looking belt that almost looked like something he'd made for himself, the robot walk out after Ben's brown sign, the terrible commentary ...

Just a shame he's not fighting mitts on the 17th.
In the words of GSP, everyone is a champion on the pads.

We're all familiar with the type of people that comment against McGregor's tweets and social media posts, but good grief are they bad this time. It's worth dipping in just to see what people are willing to defend him doing. Genuinely unbelievable.

why does Ben Askren believe this is a good idea? 😄
I guess he doesn't care about the outcome and knows it will make him a load of cash.

Jake Paul apparently fancies his chances against a retired MMA fighter known for his grappling ...

But McGregor's much-talked about power isn't as much of a factor at 155lbs as it was at 145lbs against smaller opponents.
Yeah, I'm not really commenting on or disputing that. My point was about Dustin because of the unique way we can compare 145 and 155 Mcgregor hitting him.
QuoteI don't think it's so much the weight cut as Poirier is now a naturally bigger guy. Not to mention that he's more skilled in slipping punches and moving with the shots that he was back then.
Does being bigger give you a better chin? Being bigger through not cutting weight ... that makes sense. So, yeah, like I said, I guess we have to put it down to Dustin being more resilient when he hasn't been through a weight cut. The fact that resilience means the difference between being knocked out or not (by the same person hitting you) is interesting to me.
Edit: That adds some sense to it, yeah, @jimufctna24. I also literally just finished the post fight presser and Dustin says there that some of the shots Mcgregor landed did significant damage. He says a follow up to the big left Conor landed would've had him in real trouble. So, yeah, the difference in not cutting that weight appears to be the difference between getting hurt and getting knocked out.
-
What confuses me is that he was able to knockout Dustin at FW but landed clean at LW and didn't hurt him. The weight cut for Dustin to FW was enough to weaken his chin that much? We're also talking about a younger Dustin who had less miles on the clock and therefore, logically, a better chin than he does now. What evidence is there that Dustin had a particularly extreme cut to FW? Did he ever miss weight in that division? Visually, he never appeared to be that dehydrated on the scales. Not, say, compared to Mcgregor.

Anyone know what Poirier has been wearing round his neck this week?

Looks like something other than just a Covid mask.

You cant get 4/1 on a Poirier win. Thats hovering around the 2/1 mark. You can get 4/1 on Poirier stopping McGregor.
Yeah, my bad ... that's a product of staying up too late looking at odds. 😂. 4/1 still decent for the stoppage though.
-
The bookies have McGregor as a big favourite. You can get a Poirier win at 4/1. Mind blowing.

I'm just waiting on a red-faced, sweaty Dana telling us that Khabib vs Conor II, live from Putin's garden in Moscow is in the works.
Nah, has to be GSP, surely?
I would love his 30th win to be by making Connor tap again. It might mean Connor has to beat Poirier, but I'll take that.

I'm being slow, here. Why did Michael Chandler weigh in?
Edit: just seen he's on official standby for the main event. Been out of the loop for a little while with the UFC. When did they start doing that? I know they've built cards so that there are natural replacements in the past, but to have a fighter officially on standby all the way up to weigh ins ... I can't remember them doing that.
-
Really interesting fight if it happens. Doesn't leave much for Khabib though. He'll hold a decisive win over whoever comes out on top.

Ignore.

Just had the latest iteration of the beer that got me into the ale scene, Ginger by Marble Arch. When I first had it, it was a mid strength bitter flavoured with ginger coming in around 4.1% or there abouts.
They've since upped it to 6.1% and upped the spice with cayenne and Szechuan peppers. I hadn't had it in about 7 years, but it remains a lovely beer which manages to both taste like it's flavours and still taste like a bloody good ale. Strong recommend although I have an inherent bias in that I lived next door to Marble's home, The Marble Arch in Ancoats, Manchester, for 7 years.
Didn't they always do a strong version of that? They used to call it Marble Ginger 6 and it was 6%.

My dalliance with ale is over. Not only did it dent my wallet buy it also extended my waistline. I have returned to red wine and self loathing instead.
Ales will be reserved for afternoon beers at the pub once in a blue moon.
Red wine has more calories than beer.

Finally, we did our favourite treat breakfast over the weekend with chilaquiles which are tortillas cut up and fried and then cooked a second time in tomatillo salsa. I'm not sure this is the most authentic recipe necessarily, but with a poached egg and some feta it was bloody marvellous even if it doesn't look that appetising in this (pretty poor) picture.
Nice! Sounds like perfect hangover food.

Cheeky little Jaipur too. Cheese burgers and hoppy pale beer ... can't beat it.

They're crisp with a very slight chew in the middle. Might be a bit chewy if you baked for a shorter time though?

@Chunk those look stunning, have you get a recipe?
They're from Binging with Babish:
My tip would be to not skip the brown butter step and to make sure you take the butter all the way to the point of brown - it's tempting to take it off the heat too early. Brown butter completely changes the flavour.
