As Butch pointed out back then, all the great stuff from the early Monday Night Wars like the early nWo were PG. I'm pretty sure Smackdown has been PG ever since it's debut in 1999. Quote

Even during the Attitude Era? I'll take your word for it. Either way, I had no issue with PG - I just don't think what WWE were pushing when they "officially" went PG was it. Quote

Paid Members LaGoosh Posted February 5, 2025 Author Paid Members Posted February 5, 2025 If true that's surprising. Especially in the Ruthless Aggression era where you had Torrie and Dawn Marie lezzing off and shagging old men, Brock Lesnar throwing disabled people down stairs, Kurt Angle trying to rape Sharnell, Muhammad Hassan and a bunch of terrorists trying to cut off The Undertaker's head etc. etc. Quote
Paid Members Supremo Posted February 5, 2025 Paid Members Posted February 5, 2025 Finally caught up on all the TV. It’s time we call it. Harley Cameron should beat Mercedes for the TBS Title in Australia. And then she should make a little tiny belt for a puppet version of herself and only ever communicate exclusively via ventriloquism for her entire Title reign. Quote

I’ve no idea how they got away with some of the things they did - particularly the Dawn Marie/Torrie Wilson ‘sex’ segment; but really most of the above. I’m not sure how PG certification works in the States, but I’m assuming it’s not strictly enforced, and a lot of trust is placed on those behind a show to adhere to their rating. Quote
Paid Members tiger_rick Posted February 5, 2025 Paid Members Posted February 5, 2025 Whatever the rating, Smackdown definitely was a toned down show originally because it was on UPN and not cable and had to be different. It was rarely ever that risque except for that early 00s period where they got completely desperate about the massive fall off and just decided that sex would sell. Wrestling by it's very nature can never be "U". Quote
Paid Members Carbomb Posted February 5, 2025 Paid Members Posted February 5, 2025 Whether wrestling can intrinsically be U or not, it's nevertheless what WWE booking at the time was intentionally attempting, or at least came strongly across as. Stuff like "JBL is poopy", Hornswoggle escaping pursuit through painted holes in the wall, DX disappearing into a world of weird people under the ring, etc. just screamed how much they wanted to draw the little 'uns in. DX also had cock T-Shirts. The act was shit, literally in some cases, but it certainly was PG at best. Also, FWIW, the "JBL is poopy" thing was in 2005. WWE announced they were PG in 2008. Quote

Still, my point stands: a big part of the problem I had with the product was stuff like I've described. PG demonstrably doesn't have to be cartoony, just like it doesn't have to be lazily puerile. There was some outright shite on WWE TV throughout the monopoly years stemming from uncreative attempts to draw in the kids at the expense of teens and adults watching at the time. Quote

He actually did the limo spray paint thing twice, once in 2005 where he wrote "JBL Sucks" and again in 2008, when Cena and Crime Time were mates for a bit and he wrote "JBL is Poopy" Quote
wordsfromlee Posted February 5, 2025 Posted February 5, 2025 There seems to be a lot of unhappy Australian AEW fans kicking off about that upcoming AEW Grand Slam show. It was originally a stadium show, but got moved to an arena due to low ticket sales and now it’s apparently been changed from a 4-hour PPV to a 2-hour TV taping. Quote

Sounds shite for the poor bastards who have forked out for tickets and travel. From a purely booking POV, to build Ospreay/Omega vs. Fletcher/Takeshita and Mariah vs. Toni for a one-off Collision is absolute madness. The latter especially is definitely a PPV attraction. Complete fuck-up all round that will probably kill only the second international market they've strayed into. This company, man. Quote
Guest Posted February 5, 2025 Posted February 5, 2025 Did they ever say Grand Slam was a PPV? Previous years weren't. Quote
