Paid Members Carbomb Posted October 30, 2024 Paid Members Posted October 30, 2024 I didn't know about Ali Dia, so read up on him and discovered something brilliant: Quote

Got brought on for Southampton in a game, and brought off before the end. One of my favourite players 46 minutes ago, Frankie Crisp said: This is why AI is failing. It was Southampton and George Weah’s supposed cousin. EDIT: what gman said. Thanks guys! Quote

Javier Margas you may be thinking of https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Javier_Margas Harry Redknapp tells the story brilliantly Quote
TheHighlightReel Posted October 31, 2024 Posted October 31, 2024 22 hours ago, Cod Eye said:The other was Mido, the Egyptian legend. I'm having to think back here, but I think it was shortly after leaving Spurs. The rumour mill started to churn, and everyone was buzzing at the thought. Even though he wasnt in his prime, he had to guarantee us 15 goals a season in the Championship. He was a top class striker not that long ago. Yeah, didnt work out like that. He turned up to training the size of a house. Took months to get "fit", and by get fit I mean he was now only the size of a starter home and when he finally did get on the pitch it lasted 13 minutes where he never touched the ball. He was released a day or two later. In his defence, he picked up an injury on the eve of the season starting, so maybe he could have sorted his fitness out had it not happened. Both were Free's like I said, but their wages must have cost us a fortune. Mido in particular wont have been cheap! When he signed for West Ham his reputation was so low he agreed to a contract that was something like £1k a week. And we still overpaid. Only thing he managed on the pitch was to miss a penalty against Everton. Quote
Paid Members theironshake Posted October 31, 2024 Paid Members Posted October 31, 2024 Man as a Villa fan it has to be the Sorry David Undsworth story. Then Manager John Gregory needs a right back and finds that David Undsworth is unhappy at West Ham. So signs him for £4,000,000. He does the whole showing up at the ground and being unveiled at Villa Park. Then drives back to Liverpool decides it's too far and that his wife and family will definitely not move to the West Midlands.. Tells the boss and 9 days later returns to Everton for the same fee they paid West Ham. John Gregory then calls him under the thumb I. The media and that Mrs Undsworth definitely wears the trousers. He was literally at the club for 9 days having only played half heartedly in a friendly against Wycombe. Quote
Members SuperBacon Posted October 31, 2024 Author Members Posted October 31, 2024 Didi Hamann did something similar didn't he? Joining Bolton for a day (must've had a good look round) before saying "Nah not for me" and going to Man City. Quote
Paid Members Statto Posted October 31, 2024 Paid Members Posted October 31, 2024 My personal favourite of that kind of story is Ian Crook cementing his status as a Norwich legend by agreeing to sign for Ipswich, going so far as to pose for photos with the shirt etc, then realising it was a shithole and re-signing for Norwich. Paid Members Scratch Posted October 31, 2024 Paid Members Posted October 31, 2024 Almost all of the bad Liverpool signings have rightly been mentioned, but I’d add Paul Konchesky. When Hodgson became manager, he set the tone of his reign by immediately signing a bog-standard full back and put him straight into the Liverpool first team. It was clear the minute he signed that he was miles off the standard. I just looked and was stunned to see he has 2 England caps. I’d also add Joe Cole. Even on a free it ended up being a terrible signing. Quote
