Fog Dude
On 5/4/2024 at 12:58 AM, ultimo the great said: What in the gods name is a Kansas City Current?? surely anyone can find a better name than that 😄 Rejected franchise names included the Pittsburgh Prune, Salt Lake Sultana and of course the California Raisin. I think 'current' (rather than 'currant') refers to the fact that Kansas City straddles two states either side of a fast-flowing river, with the bigger 'half' actually in Missouri. So if you question that then you should also be baffled by Rapid Vienna, whose success over Energy Drink FC caught most people out this week. Glad to know you're still enjoying the American matches though! Anyhow, the results went into the initial post on Monday night, with the table since updated too. Lots of movement considering it was a low-scoring round late in the season, but where it matters Rory is unchanged at the top and even extends his lead into double figures, while Chutney Spoon remains in last place with gap still at 22 points. If what Bent Wookie says is accurate then he'd be sixth, just ahead of Vegeta on most exact scores – but instead he spares himself being the clear worst performer of the week, plus it would've dragged the average below 6 this time out as well. Given the narrow spread of scores, you'd think there was a good chance we'd have had a draw in the FPL Cup final. And it was indeed close, but we do have a definitive winner: congrats to MVP RULZ on yet another Predictions League trophy! Another one to stick in his cabinet, then... but he's got some work to do in these next few weeks to secure The Double. He actually lost his first Cup tie to me (of all people) in the group stages, then the cross-pool game against Pete in November, but then went on a run of five unspectacular efficient wins in a row to nab his latest trinket. The only bonus point this time was due to the Brighton-Villa result where nobody else went for a home win. Yes, the home side are out of form but Villa look absolutely knackered. Coincidentally I've booked myself a tour of the AmEx for the start of next month. Elsewhere, victories for Forest, Man City, Newcastle Utd, Chelsea and Liverpool plus a stalemate at the Bus Stop in Hounslow were all generally good for one-pointers. The scale of Palace's triumph on Bank Holiday Monday caught most people out, while the outcome over the pond produced our only correct exact score guess as Rory went for a 1-1 tied game. No more D2Ds or Cup now, so just two ordinary rounds to go and then the 'bumper' final week. Next card in the original post in just a tick. Fog Dude
On 5/10/2024 at 9:58 PM, I Bent My Wookie said: Had a dream I posted this, turns out I hadn't. Lets score 3 points! Wish my dreams were as relatively benign as yours. And hey, one of us scored 3 this week and it wasn't you! Wasn't the kind of round we needed so close to the end though. Everybody else scored 5-7 points, and Stinky's just-in-time pick of a 4-0 home loss for (by then) already relegated Granada was the only correct exact score guess, meaning little change to the table. Rory's lead is down to 8, while Chutney Spoon closes the gap at the foot of the standings to a mere 20 points. Anyhow, the results were up in the opening post on Sunday night as usual. The randomly selected 'wildcard' fixture was match #8, the Women's Cup final, which turned into more of a one-sided affair as the second half wore on. That meant nobody got the exact score, but the top 7 all at least got the right outcome to claim a bonus point each. Elsewhere, away wins for Chelsea and Arsenal – the former a dramatic late comeback and the latter a typical single-goal grind – proved fruitful for one-pointers. Victories for Brentford, Palace, Aberdeen (I know it was a dead rubber but Hibs now look more of a mess than their visitors) and Villarreal plus a score draw at St James's led to a mixed bunch of guesses. Double penalties heartbreak on consecutive weekends for Solihull, again after a 2-2 draw at Wembley, produced a dud. All of that does technically leave the title race and relegation battle in play on the final day, so that's what we'll focus on when the final set of 10 goes live at the top of the thread in just a mo. There is still one more week after that, of course, but it'll have more than 10 matches!
