When I was a kid, one of the handful of tapes I had was "The Mighty Reds", the Liverpool 87/88 season review. Barnes and Beardsley were exceptional back then and have been favourites ever since. I feel that Beardo was a product of the times and his environment (hence his questionable morals) but Barnes was a god's gift of a footballer who would have been incredible in any time. Had the strongest thighs and calves I've ever seen on a player, was quick, floated over the (often dreadful) ground, and had a wand of a left foot. I think, more than anyone, the European ban stopped him becoming a real superstar. That and never quite being the same player for England, despite scoring probably the greatest goal in our history. He's the closest I can think of. Bergkamp ws magnificent. Remember, people would go on about his goal record. As if being that outrageous wasn't enough. Quote
