Awards Moderator HarmonicGenerator Posted March 1, 2014 Awards Moderator Share Posted March 1, 2014 The Oscars are on tomorrow night, and I remember I did a bit of a predictions sweepstake last year to see which UKFFer best knew the whims of the Academy. Seemed like a bit of fun and it got a little bit of discussion going as well, so let's try it again this year.  If you delete all the losing nominees from your picks so just the category and your winning prediction are left, it'll be loads easier to read and if you want to put any thoughts about the films or performances in with that as well, that'll be great because it'll inspire that little bit of discussion again, too.  The winner is the person who manages to correctly predict the highest number of winners. They win a jpeg of an Oscar, probably.  So, "let's take a look at the nominees."  Best Picture: American Hustle Captain Phillips Dallas Buyers Club Gravity Her Nebraska Philomena 12 Years a Slave The Wolf of Wall Street  Best Actor in a Leading Role: Christian Bale (American Hustle) Bruce Dern (Nebraska) Leonardo DiCaprio (The Wolf of Wall Street) Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave) Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club)  Best Actress in a Leading Role: Amy Adams (American Hustle) Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine) Sandra Bullock (Gravity) Judi Dench (Philomena) Meryl Streep (August: Osage County)  Best Actor in a Supporting Role: Barkhad Abdi (Captain Phillips) Bradley Cooper (American Hustle) Michael Fassbender (12 Years a Slave) Jonah Hill (The Wolf of Wall Street) Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club)  Best Actress in a Supporting Role: Sally Hawkins (Blue Jasmine) Jennifer Lawrence (American Hustle) Lupita Nyong'o (12 Years a Slave) Julia Roberts (August: Osage County) June Squibb (Nebraska)  Best Animated Feature: The Croods Despicable Me 2 Ernest & Celestine Frozen The Wind Rises  Best Cinematography: The Grandmaster Gravity Inside Llewyn Davis Nebraska Prisoners  Best Costume Design: American Hustle The Grandmaster The Great Gatsby The Invisible Woman 12 Years a Slave  Best Directing: David O. Awards Moderator HarmonicGenerator Posted March 1, 2014 Author Awards Moderator Share Posted March 1, 2014 My picks.  Best Picture: 12 Years a Slave. It shouldn't be anything else.  Best Actor in a Leading Role: Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club). I haven't seen Dallas Buyers Club, and I have a hard time thinking anyone could be better than Ejiofor was in 12 Years... - or Tom Hanks in Captain Phillips, for that matter. But this 'McConnaissance' story has to end with an Oscar win. It's the right Hollywood ending. And I'm fine with that. It's a really strong category this year, I wouldn't mind DiCaprio winning either, it's about time he got one.  Best Actress in a Leading Role: Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine). The recent stories about Woody Allen don't seem to have deterred anyone from giving her all the awards. She bloody deserves them too, she's fantastic as Jasmine.  Best Actor in a Supporting Role: Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club). Personally, I wouldn't be able to see past Fassbender, but the momentum seems to be with Leto.  Best Actress in a Supporting Role: Jennifer Lawrence (American Hustle). If Hustle's getting any of the acting awards, it'll get this one. Lupita Nyong'o would be a fine choice too, and I wouldn't mind Sally Hawkins getting some recognition either.  Best Animated Feature: Frozen. Though The Wind Rises has Miyazaki involvement so you can't discount it.  Best Cinematography: Gravity. All the way.  Best Costume Design: American Hustle. I find it hard to look past Gatsby for this one, but the Hustle costumes do stand out.  Best Directing: Alfonso Cuaron - Gravity. He's got the vision, and this'll be the consolation for it not getting any of the other major awards.  Best Documentary Feature: The Act of Killing. Harvey Weinstein's pushing 20 Feet From Stardom, though...  Best Documentary Short: CaveDigger because it has the best name.  Best Film Editing: 12 Years a Slave. Captain Phillips and Gravity could both win this one, too, but 12 Years is ... I think 'unflinching' is probably the right word. That hanging scene... the edit couldn't have come at any other moment.  Best Foreign Language Film: The Great Beauty  Best Makeup and Hairstyling: Dallas Buyers Club  Best Original Score: Gravity. I liked Saving Mr Banks' score but it's not a contender anywhere else on Sunday. Her could be a dark horse.  Best Original Song: Let It Go (Frozen). I haven't heard it but there's usually about 5 or 6 articles a day about this song on Buzzfeed so it must be popular.  Best Production Design: Her. It's a perfectly realised world, so different and yet not that different, it got the balance exactly right for the film.  Best Animated Short Film: Get a Horse! It's a sweep for Disney!  Best Live Action Short Film: The Voorman Problem  Best Sound Editing: Captain Phillips  Best Sound Mixing: Inside Llewyn Davis because it should bloody get something.  Best Visual Effects: Gravity. As great as Smaug looked, it can't be anything else this year.  Best Adapted Screenplay: Philomena. I'd have picked Wolf of Wall Street myself, but 506 fucks might be a few too many for an Oscar win. I'm happy to be wrong though!  Best Original Screenplay: American Hustle because I probably haven't predicted it enough times yet. Dallas Buyers Club and Her are both contenders as well, but it's probably a Hustle-y sort of category, this one.

Paid Members I Bent My Wookie Posted March 1, 2014 Paid Members Share Posted March 1, 2014 Best Picture: Nebraska - Its probably my most out there pic, but I loved it. Just everything about how it was filmed and directed stood out for me. As a film I did think 12 Years A Slave was excellently made but I don't think its a stand out film of its generation, more a stand out topic delved into astonishingly well.  Best Actor in a Leading Role: Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club) - The guy is having such a great career revival, and is starting to really become not a ballache to sit and watch, perfect ending to that.  Best Actress in a Leading Role: Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine) - I'd love Dench to win, but I feel Blanchett was marginally better than the other nominees.   Best Actor in a Supporting Role: Barkhad Abdi (Captain Phillips) - For his first proper acting job, what an amazing start and what better accolade to collect. Can't see past him. Though Leto probably does.  Best Actress in a Supporting Role: Jennifer Lawrence (American Hustle) - The Oscar's darling was the best part of Hustle for me.   Best Animated Feature: Frozen  Best Cinematography: Gravity  Best Costume Design: American Hustle  Best Directing: Alexander Payne - Nebraska  Best Documentary Feature: The Act of Killing  Best Documentary Short: The Lady in Number 6: Music Saved My Life - Having watched this its so bitter sweet the lady this was about (Alice Herz-Sommer) died last week and her story will now be pushed to such a bigger audience.  Best Film Editing: Gravity  Best Foreign Language Film: The Great Beauty  Best Makeup and Hairstyling: Dallas Buyers Club  Best Original Score: Her  Best Original Song: Let It Go (Frozen)  Best Production Design: The Great Gatsby  Best Animated Short Film: Get a Horse!  Best Live Action Short Film: Helium  Best Sound Editing: All Is Lost  Best Sound Mixing: Inside Llewyn Davis  Best Visual Effects: Gravity  Best Adapted Screenplay: Philomena  Best Original Screenplay: Dallas Buyers Club

Keith Houchen
It was every fucking question. He just said speak to casting agents about twenty times. Really ruined the whole thing, was hoping for a lot more from it to be honest.
