Game of Thrones: book thread

Been wanting to make this thread for a while, was going to wait until finishing 'A Dance With Dragons' so I would be spoiler-proof but as a few people have mentioned it, because I am helplessly addicted to it, and because Season 2 is heating up nicely, thought I may as well do it now.

Spoiler warning

Any book spoilers that are further on from the latest UK episode please put in spoiler tags and indicate which book the spoiler is from. If anyone gives away book spoilers I will fucking flay you, behead you, dip your head in tar and mount it on a spike for the crows to feast on your eyes. Or report you. Whichever is manlier. Anything from season 1 is fair game, so if you haven't seen that, go spend 10 awesome hours being awesome and then come back.

So, what does everyone think of the new season 2 characters / castings so far? Yara / Asha is the only one I've been a bit torn on but everyone else has been amazing IMO, Davos and Melisandre especially.

Where do you stand on her scene with Stannis in ep 2? Seems a lot of people were torn but personally i love that the series can show stuff that was only implied in the books because no POV character was ever there to directly see them together. Stannis is awesome too, love how he's taken on some of Mark Addy's mannerisms, especially in his 'I am angry' voice

The season is going really well so far. I was surprised to see the scene with Stannis and Melisandre, much as I was with the relationship between Renly and Loras in season 1. It's interesting how the show runs with mere ideas from the books like that. Melisandre is a great and mysterious character and I look forward to see how they use her. Was a bit miffed that they changed Asha's name to Yara, I guess they didn't want peolple confused with Osha in Winterfell. I wish they'd given a bit more time to her little exchange with Theon from meeting him at the docks to getting up to the Pyke as its really entertaining. Obviously there's a shitload of things going on in this story to cram into 10 episodes per season, but I think they've done a great job juggling so far. As I've said before, the casting is near perfect. Tyrion as the acting hand of the King is just awesome.

Yeah that was exactly it, same reason they changed Robert Arryn to Robin in season 1 to avoid confusion with King Robert and Robb Stark. I was OK with the latter but this one seems a bit pointless. Yara / Asha was definitely not as flirty or mischievous as she is in the books, but hopefully she'll grow on me. Loved the Iron Islands stuff in general though. The 'paying the iron price' dialogue was especially amazing.

Just watched episode 3. Best episode so far, I think.

I'm absolutley hooked on this story. I started on the books after watching season 1 of Game of Thrones and have just started aSoS.

I have to agree with you guys, Davos is perfect and will serve as a good replacement for Ned in the 'man of honour' role. I'm also not sold on Melisandre, but its early days yet. Peter Dinklage as Tyrion the Imp is one of the best characters on television, and Jerome Flynn has been excellent as Bronn, too. Really looking foward to seeing more of the wildlings and the others. Dany's story is pretty slow in this book/season, I wish they could just skip straight to a certain house instead.

I'm really narked about the name changing stuff. Not because it contradicts the book, simply because I think it's really insulting to think that the audience would get the Lord of the Vale confused with the Usurper, or "Asha" confused with "Osha" - especially considering the latter hasn't been named on screen yet anyway! How thick do they think people are?

Should the show run long enough to serialize all the books, can we expect to see (A Dance With Dragons spoiler)

SPOILER - Highlight the black box to read

"Dave" Connington so the viewers dont get him confused with Jon Snow??

Perhaps unsurprisingly I thought the episode that achieved the most this series was tonight's one, the one with no sex in it. Go figure. That's my only complaint so far about this series, they didn't seem so determined to get so many tits in last series. Last week they seemed to parody themselves by having three sex scenes, two of which were pretty pointless. Although, saying that, I think it only really bugs me because a lot of the fans of the show keep making claims about it being a great 'grown up' drama. Which is unfair, since as a bit of fantasy fluff it's pretty good. Most of the actors are top notch, the tone's about right (bar the "BOOBIES!" bits) and it's done a good job balancing the sheer amount of characters.

That last five minutes was incredible.

"There's men out there who want to fuck your corpses"

Yeah that was such a great scene, Yoren really shone in this episode. I was confused about exactly which characters were involved in the assault aside from Amory Lorch. IIRC in the books Lommy is killed by Raff the Sweetling, but the show wiki says the character that killed him in last nights episode was Polliver, who in the books is one of Gregors men. Hopefully that doesn't mean we miss out on the scene with SPOILER - Highlight the black box to read

Gregor, and the Tickler.

. that was one of my favourite scenes in aCoK
