If Hooper was knocking in 5 against Rangers regularly, he'd probably get a look, but Hearts?Alan Thompson got his one and only cap because of that big UEFA Cup Final run Celtic had (they were on National TV every second week, so the selectors couldn't ignore him), and because England were struggling on the left. Friendly against Sweden wasn't it?

Aye. He got 45 minutes away to Sweden, Englands bogey team and never got another look in. Always found that a bit strange. Same with the fact Sutton didnt get a look in at all despite the fact he was immense for Celtic during his time in Scotland.

Did Sutton not have a fall-out with Glenn Hoddle and the FA?

Didn't they play thompson completely out of position at full back in that game also?Sutton definitely should have been in and around that squad from around 00-04. Internationally, he probably suffered the most from staying up here. He was better than Emile Heskey for example. It felt like those down south were only considering his nightmare year with Chelsea as if that season was the norm rather than the exception for him.I think there was something with him and Hoddle now you mention it, he turned down a 'b' team call up or something.

You can see his point regarding that. He was a big-name English striker at the time, even though his spell at Chelsea wasn't the best. Hoddle must have been taking the piss when he offered him that "B" cap.

We really ought to start our season earlier. It's ricockulous that for our European teams, their first competitive game of the season is the one that has most impact on their finances (and ultimately the finances of the other teams in Europe) over that season and the seasons to follow. If teams had even two or three league games before they had to play in Europe, everyone would be up to a decent level of match fitness and new players would have had time to get to know the team a bit better. As things stand, you can see that even the difference between first and second leg performances in the early qualifiers have been substantial.

It appears that Gennaro Gattuso is sticking to his word of returning to Rangers one day, if the transfer embargo is lifted of course;

Rino Gattuso has revealed he has spoken to members of Charles Green

Surely they could do a Dundee and sign him up as a "trialist" for a few months?

Surely you can't take someone on trial if you're unable to sign them later? Besides, I don't think trialists can play in competitive games.

Dundee had a myriad of players who were playing in league games as "trialists". Rules might be different in the SPL though.

In the SFL, at least, trialists can feature in three games. That does not mean playing, so you could be named on the bench for all three but never play a minute of the game.Edit: Talk of Stranraer's Stephen Stirling going to Morton as well.
