slipping below the radar but well worth half hour of your time this weekend is this:

If the undercard does nothing for you, that main event is legit. Would have been a massive fight in the UFC if it had taken place about 18 months ago.

Paul Harris did it again, fucking unbelievable.

Is Palhares the most feared submission guy in the history of the sport? id wager it's between him and Shinya Aoki (am i missing someone?), the guy just leaves a path of destruction. Outside of Alan Belcher no one has survived Palhares leg lock attack, dude is fucking people up.

The featherweight title fight was a bit of a non-event. Lance Palmer notched another piece of gold for Team Alpha Male dominating Rick Glenn. Hearing that Glenn lost his sister to cancer a week before the fight you had to feel for the guy, he fought like a guy who's mind wasn't really in the fight either, poor fucker :(

I haven't seen it but apparently he didn't release at the tap. I read that Fitch was tapping and screaming, and the ref was trying to wrench Palhares off him.

*edit*

Here's the video; http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ADhiWUjNiEA

Not sure I'm cool with that. He knew what he was doing.

He holds it for perhaps 2 seconds, it's a tough one cause he does release it as soon as the ref jumps in rather than on Fitch's tap. It's such a dangerous hold though, i know a single second can make all the difference in compeltely fucking up someone's leg. He's escaped punishment though.

Homeboy is dangerous.

Is Palhares an idiot or an arsehole? He's got form for having done that twice - it got him fucking canned from the UFC, for fuck's sake. There may have been a chance he could've rehabbed his profile with the UFC if he'd just behaved, but you've got to think they won't want him back at all now that he's clearly demonstrated he just won't bloody learn.

I know that guys have tapped and the ref hasn't seen it so the fight has continued because the guy doing the submission released it. So I can understand not releasing a hold until the ref intervenes, but Palhares just seems like a bit of a dick about it. Especially since most leg locks are even off or on, there's no real middle ground where the lock is on,but not affecting the recipient.

To be honest I have zero problems with Palhares or the way he conducts himself with submissions and I think a lot of people give him undue shit for it.

Yes when a fighter submits that signals the end of the fight however my opinion on the matter is that it is the job of the referee to see the submission whether verbal or physical and then to inform the offensive fighter to stop as the fight is over. Any time this has happened with Palhares he has let go of the submission within a second, it isn't as if the referee is having to try and pry him off of other fighters whilst he is fully aware that the fight is over and that he has won and he continually refuses to let go.

In my opinion stopping when a fighter has submitted prior to the referee stepping in is a courtesy not a necessity, quite like in football when a player puts the ball out of play because a player on another team is injured, it's good sportsmanship and everyone likes to see it but at the end of the day it's the referee's job to make that call, anything else is courtesy.

Palhares doesn't speak english and in the heat of a fight when the adrenaline is pumping and a the majority of his submissions result in him having his back turned to his opponents then I think certain allowances should be made and more blame should be placed on the referee's than him.

He is world renowned in MMA as being without doubt the most dangerous leg submissions guy in the sport and in my opinion every ref that gets into the cage to officiate one of his fights should be in a position to step in within a split second of him getting hold of an opponents leg.

Palhares has once previously nearly cost himself a fight for stopping prematurely when he fought Dan Miller and stopped after a flurry of ground and pound, got on top of the cage and celebrated only to be told the fight wasn't over and he was nearly knocked out himself shortly after. Who can blame him for making absolutely sure a fight is over and he is the winner after that?

I also think it's important to note that Thomas Drwal who was one of the ''victims'' of his late releases of submissions openly said that he wasn't going to judge Palhares for it and that he wasn't going to complain about it either.

I know there's allegedly been problems with it in BJJ tournaments and I think Murilo Bustamante who used to coach him had said it had even caused problems in training before...which I have a lot less time for but at the end of the day when it comes to fights this isn't a tickling contest and I stand by my opinion that the overall responsibility lies with the referee's and not the fighters.

We have seen plenty of examples of needless strikes to clearly unconscious opponents and these are rarely criticised in the same manner.

I was under the impression he was denied SOTN and got dropped from the UFC for continuing to crank in a submission on Mike Pierce after the referee stepped in.

You would be correct. It took the referee several attempts before he was finally able to pull Palhares off of Pierce and break the hold. Anyone defending Palhares about that or about his record of shitty sportsmanship is living in cloud cuckoo land.

Just for the sake of the nonsense talkers like yourself Noah who are intent on "white knighting" these poor defenseless fighters who are being mutilated by evil Palhares where referees are having to make several attempts before finally being able to pull off Palhares and break the hold, above is a video of the submission in question in his fight against Pierce with a time code.

Please feel free to watch it at your convenience and observe first hand and in person that the time between the ref making contact and Palhares releasing the sub is 1.08 seconds....which is in keeping with what I said, that within 1 second (and small change) of the referee intervening, Palhares always releases the sub.

The video also fails to show these several attempts you speak of? I see one attempt and one release.

Here is a direct text taken from the unified rules of MMA, section 13, which state;

"The referee is the sole arbiter of a contest and is the only individual authorized to stop a contest. The referee may take advice from the ringside physician and/or the Commission with respect to the decision to stop a contest."

The first line states clearly that it is up to the referee to stop a contest, hence stopping strikes or submissions of your own accord is a personal choice and nowhere in the rules of MMA does it say otherwise.

Please now explain to me what exactly Palhares has done wrong in the terms of the rules and regulations of an MMA fight?

Then there must be a lot of ‘nonsense talkers’; there was almost nobody defending Palhares for that incident with Pierce. And it was not the first time Palhares has pulled that sort of stunt. But I guess that was all just nonsense talk as well, right?

Road FC 20

Dae-Hwan Kim (176lbs, 4-1) vs. Douglas Kobayashi (176lbs, 4-2) kicked things off. It seemed to be a decent enough scrap and might have turned into a good one but Kim landed a cracker of a right hand at 1:57 that dropped Kobayashi and sent him into unconsciousness. It was definitely a KO that deserves consideration for KO of the Year.

Five Word Review: It had a great finish

Kim Min-Woo (135lbs, 5-0)vs. Moon Jea-Hoon(135lbs, 6-6) was a nice enough fight but not really engaging. Neither fighter looked bad but they didn’t stand out, either, although they looked to be decent fighters.

Five Word Review: Decent but not must-see.

Park Hyung-Geun (135lbs, 1-0) vs. Han Yi-Moon (136lbs, 6-2) had a pretty exciting first round, mainly due to both men fighting very aggressively and making little attempt to defend. It was a very even round; Park had Han in trouble with a liver kick, but Han later came back with a nice looking triangle. The second started out nicely until Park landed a short overhand right that dropped Han like a ton of bricks, with Park following up with punches as the referee jumped in to call it off. This was fun to watch.

Five Word Review: A fun fight to watch.

Song Ga-Yeoun (105lbs, 1-0) vs. Satomi Takano (105lbs, 3-5) was totally one-sided as Takano walked right through Song, without any trouble at all. ‘twas entertaining, though, ending with a nasty-ass looking kimura.

Five Word Review: A fairly entertaining squash match.

Lee Gil-Woo (135lbs, 4-3) © vs. Lee Yoon-Jun (136lbs, 7-2) was the main event and was for the Road FC Bantamweight title. It was another short fight that was fairly entertaining, mostly because, as with the second fight, we saw both guys coming forward and making no attempt to back up. The highlight before the finish saw Gil-Woo have Yoon-Jun clinched against the cage but Yoon-Jun somehow managed to land a series of knees to the face of Gil-Woo. The finish itself was a corker with Yoon-Jun landing a pretty good right high kick to the head of Gil-Woo, which made a nice ‘thud’ sound, and also dropped the champion, with Yoon-Jun following up with some, really, unnecessary ground and pound as the referee leaped in to stop the fight and Yoon-Jun was understandably thrilled to have won the title, Road FC’s belts not looking entirely unlike PRIDE’s

Five Word Review: Another fun fight worth watching.

If I understood Korean, I’d probably like this a lot more, but it was still an entertaining night of action. Not great, but if you fancy giving a foreign product a try, it’s worth giving it a shot because it was still fairly entertaining and a lot of fun.

The thing about Palhares for me as just a fan is that it's really disappointing because he's a bit of a freak talent. If he was mentally all there I think he could be a legit player. He'd always be at a disadvantage in some ways with his short frame but that actually benefits his grappling. It just seems like he's such a loose cannon mentally. He has these lapses where his brain seems to check out - the aforementioned Dan Miller fight where he jumped on the cage while the fight was still underway, the Marquardt fight where he started talking to the ref and got TKO'd, the holding onto leg locks. He's just not at the races sometimes.

I love watching him fight because, as much as I love the well-roundedness of the likes of a Jon Jones or Anthony Pettis, I've always had a soft spot for the 'specialists' like Palhares (leg locks), Rousey (armbars), Cro Cop (headkicks). The fighters with that one weapon that's so lethal that opponents know it's coming but can do very little to stop it. There's something really savage about Palhares' grappling style that I love. It's unlike any other MMA grappler's style in the sport because it's so physical and has that feeling it can end at any time. Palhares' leg lock is the grapplers equivalent of a Mike Tyson KO punch in that way. You're just waiting for something brutal to happen.

But he's continually treading that line with the holding on. It might only be a second or two he's holding on but that can be all it takes with a leg lock. Kneebars and heel hooks are maybe the most dangerous and potentially career-altering/ending submissions in the sport. And Palhares is so experienced with them that he knows when he's got it locked in. He'll have felt Fitch tapping like fuck for sure.

I actually don't think Palhares held on too long really against Fitch. It's not like he held on after the ref touched them or broke any rules. He doesn't have to let go before the ref intervenes. But come on, man. Michael Flatley taps less than Fitch tapped. At that point Palhares could've let go and there's no way Fitch was going to deny he tapped and carry on. There's no way the ref would've missed the tap either. Palhares knew full well Fitch was done. So I get the 'you have to wait for the ref to step in'. Totally. But with heel hooks and shit...damn, you'd like to see a fighter let go ASAP.

The Pierce case looked pretty bad at the time to me. As did the Tomasz Drwal one. They were the two worst from what I remember. Videos like the above are fine in hindsight but at the time you're making a split second judgement and it seemed like there was pretty much unanimous agreement that the Pierce sub was held a bit too long.

I do think some of this is just because, with Palhares' track record, he's more under the microscope. People are kind of going into his fights half expecting him to do it now. But I just think he could let go a bit quicker. Once you feel a guy tapping like that, and this wasn't some phantom tap, Fitch was rapid-fire spanking that arse - just let go. Refs need to all over it as well though. If you're a referee in a Palhares fight and you see him even touching the opponents leg, be alert as fuck, get in position and get ready to jump in of need be.

What "sort of stunt"? You can't just keep calling something foul no matter how many times somebody offers evidence to the contrary.

The number of people saying something is good or bad doesn't dictate whether or not it is at all.

Millions of people think The X Factor is great...does that make it good? No, it makes it popular.
