Definitely that from my side. I know who Ms Marvel is (loved the comics), but I feel out of the loop on this one. I watched Wandavision (and pretty much stopped watching any of the series there), so I get how Monica became Photon (if she's called that), but now she's connected with Ms Marvel and so is Captain Marvel? I'm assuming there's been set-up that I've missed.

The set-up for how the three of them end up connected sort of happens in the film. They only explain it briefly but that does happen.Ā

  2. Iā€™d forgotten we were meant to get Danhausen this week! Unless he was under the devil mask this is a big disappointment!

I enjoyed, amongst the G1 thing, them announcing Danielson will be at Wembley next year. Itā€™s 90% certain heā€™ll be injured again by then, so Iā€™m not counting on it. Glad theyā€™ve not forgotten that PAC and Jamie Hayter missed out on Wembley too - wrap the three of them in cotton wool til August please.

On the show, Julia vs Willow lived up to my expectations, good match and letā€™s get that title onto Hart at Full Gear. I didnā€™t get much Copeland vs Archer, but a fun main event and itā€™s still surreal to see Edge in an AEW ring.

  3. I really enjoyed The Marvels.

A few spoiler free thoughts and Iā€™ll put more spoilery ones in a box.

    - Iman Vellani is excellent in the film. Sheā€™s got her character absolutely nailed down.Ā Her family are a brilliant addition, like they were in the Ms Marvel series - theyā€™re just great.
    - The film is so much lighter and more fun than I expected. Itā€™s genuinely funny in quite a few places which is really nice.
    - Superb cat content. Superb cat content. Itā€™s worth repeating. CATS.
    - I had a few issues - I didnā€™t think Zawe Ashton was the best fit, and while the movie wasnā€™t about the villain so it didnā€™t matter, she just didnā€™t work for me - but overall it was just loads of fun!
    Ā

    Spoiler

    - Speaking of cats... the Empire review had mentioned an all-time great needle drop, but I was not expecting THAT song, or for it to fit so perfectly. Unbelievable!
    - Iā€™m not a fan of the tendency for superhero films to try and cram in No Way Home style hootin and hollerin fan service moments, but I have to admit I basically did that and punched the air at the final scene. Kate Bishop! KATE BISHOP! Kate Bishop!!!!!!
    - And then the mid credits scene! What theā€”ā€”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    - Also, the movie pretends Secret Invasion never happened and this is for the best.

I'm going to sound old and grumpy but I'm not really enjoying Vikingo when I see him. Most of his stuff looks incredibly sloppy or unbelievable in context. I assume he's still fairly early on in his career but yeah he's just a walking GIF machine at the moment.

There were a few times where I felt FTR were waiting around for ages and ages to catch him and Komander on their dives, long enough for me to notice how long it had been, which isnā€™t great. With Vikingo though, the moves are at least spectacular enough he can just about get away with it.

  5. Couple of things to look forward to on this weekā€™s show. Adam Copeland and Lance Archer facing off in their six man tag could be great, and Willow Nightingale vs Julia Hart has a lot of potential. Julia has improved so much this year, in the ring and as a character, and sheā€™s becoming one of my favourites in the womenā€™s division. Make Brody King her full time backup and give her the TBS title.

The world champ shouldnā€™t give the slightest shit about the tinpot ROH tag titles, and Samoa Joe shouldnā€™t have any interested in carrying about the TV title.

I take the MJF bit as him not caring about the ROH tag titles, rather him caring about the thing he and his one friend won together.Ā

Doesnā€™t change the fact they donā€™t need to be ROH titles to tell that story, especially when the actual AEW tag belts have become totally forgettable since theyā€™re stuck in Collision limbo. But I can justify that one in my head - granted in a similar way to ā€œMJF doesnā€™t know how to act like a genuine babyface so he just acts like he thinks heā€™s meant toā€. Which I do think heā€™s doing as well.

  7. We just finished rewatching Andor. Fuck, what a series. I love it so much. The first three episodes get accused of being slow but I find them so propulsive and engaging - the building of Ferrix as a living, breathing community that gives the finale so much extra weight, the jobsworthiness of the Pre-Mor employees, Trevor from Eastenders shouting ā€œshiiiit!ā€ when it all goes wrongā€¦ Then you get Aldhani, which Iā€™d love love love to see in a cinema, because the Eye when it happens is magnificent, also to fully appreciate Stanley Townsend giving it full RSC. Especially liked rewatching Ebon Moss-Bachrach after seeing him in The Bear. Then you get Narkina 5 and MY GOD ANDY SERKIS is the absolute best. The show just casually drops in lines like ā€œIā€™d rather die trying to take them down than die giving them what they wantā€, amazing. Then you get Fiona Shaw inciting revolution in the last episode and when I die please turn me into a brick and use me to smash a fascistā€™s head in. Andor is bloody brilliant. Rogue One this weekend.

    Best rewatched in small blocks.

    Episodes 1-3 (the setup)

    Episodes 4-6 (the heist)

    Episode 7 (breather)

    Episodes 8-10 (the prison)

    Episodes 11-12 (the conclusion)

Looking forward to season 2 so much, but at the same time kind of worried because they canā€™t possibly maintain the same level of quality.

  8. I was at the Newcastle NXT show and was it really nearly eight years ago? It was great seeing PAC wrestle at the Arena after watching him in various leisure centres and theatre venues. American Alpha were mega popular. And we got our cheap seats upgraded because it hadnā€™t sold especially well.

Kona Reevesā€¦ havenā€™t read that name in a long while. What happened to him?

Even WWE don't seem to view the RAW "World" Title that important, it's never the main focus of RAW, its never involved in the main event and the segments involving it are typically randomly in thr middle of the show (usually not even top of the hour or what not). It's just odd. What's the point of winning it. May as well go for the IC which has a lot more prestige.

Though I havenā€™t watched a WWE show since WrestleMania, itā€™s really nice to think that 2023 WWE is getting something right when I read ā€œIC titleā€ and ā€œprestigeā€ together in the same sentence. It was always my favourite title and for so long it was an afterthought - just look at @air_raidā€™s house show reports for how often the champ would lose. Knowing itā€™s not that anymore is great.

NGP worked well because you had a likable & knowledgeable main host and two likeable but less knowledgeable people around them. It was also tightly edited, even when the runtime grew towards the end or that one where Adam was too hungover to finish šŸ˜„

When a show is all wrestling nerds or people in wrestling it's a bit dry and the humor can be awful, without a knowledge base at the center it's annoying to hear stuff you know is wrong. I always liked NGP hitting the sweet spot.

Itā€™s the reason Wrestle Me worked so well too. It wouldnā€™t have been half as fun if Pete knew as much as Marc.

  11. We got front standing tickets for Sunderland which were about Ā£145, and the same for the second night at Nijmegen which were slightly more. Stupidly expensive and I wouldnā€™t pay anything close to that for anyone else, butā€¦ itā€™s Springsteen.

Weirdly the seats right at the back of the Stadium of Light which my parents wanted cost more than ours right at the front.

  12. ā€œDon Callis likes wet socksā€ is up there with ā€œFOUR NAAN?ā€ as sign of the year.

That obvious highlight aside, what a main event! Fantastic match that really drew me in - with one especially gasp-worthy near fall towards the end.

Weā€™ve got to be heading towards an Armageddon style match at the December PPV havenā€™t we? So many people gunning for MJF right now.

Shame to hear Danielson is injured again. Not sure how long a broken orbital bone keeps you out, but now we have the ticking clock any time missed is Danielson time weā€™ll never get back. Stop putting him with Okada, itā€™s ended badly twice now!

Samoa Joe is still king of the squashes but Claudio gave him a run for his money. Possibly my favourite match heā€™s had in AEW, uppercuts all over the place, lovely.

Shida and Abadon had a fun Halloween match. Iā€™m not fussed about Abadon but bringing them out for a spooky plunder fest once a year is something Iā€™d be fine with. Half thought Danhausen might turn up, but I guess this big Halloween themed return is being saved for ā€¦ the day after Halloween.

Couldn't care about AR Fox or FTR but otherwise a good show.

Santana/Ortiz was a solid 10 minutes of believable violence. They should have switched it with the HOOK/RVD tag on Dynamite it would have improved that show significantly.Ā

Ortiz refusing to fist bump but still showing a slight bit of respect was a good ending and felt real. These two are great together and hopefully either the story continues or they find themselves tagging again. Worth noting that one if Ortiz's shoulders was definitely not on the mat for the 3 count.

It was a good match, they were both really going for it. Could be the best I've seen Ortiz, though Santana still has a much bigger upside.

Really enjoyed the MJF-Omega video package after that match too.

I'll probably post longer about it one day but TNA 2005 where Raven won the belt up to where Sting beats Jeff Jarrett at Bound for Glory 2006 is my favourite TNA era. A weird combo of WCW, Southern Wrasslin, NWA Wildside, WWE structure tropes, but with a six sided ring and a Memphis cliffhanger. Absolutely love that period. Recorded that entire block on LP VHS tapes back when. Grrrrrrr, great days!

There was a period where they were between TV deals (maybe after Fox Sports Net but before Spike TV) where Impact was a one hour show they put up on their website, and it was genuinely great every week. Youā€™d get some decent backstage skits, some X Division madness, an unexpected return and some main event shenanigans and it never disappointed.

  15. Danielson vs Andrade was a great match, and Kingston vs Jarrett was loads of fun (Eddieā€™s promo after actually made me want to see a Jay Lethal match).

Battle of the Belts worth watching for an enjoyable Samoa Joe squash and an absolutely electric moment with Orange Cassidy at the start. Will keep it vague as this isnā€™t a BOTB thread (is it?) but it was thrilling to see.

  16. Amazon also have daily 99p deals for Kindle, so if you want to read more but struggle with physical books / canā€™t necessarily afford full price / donā€™t have easy access to a library, thatā€™s a good way to pick some new stuff up for only a little money.
