  1. People are definitely more accepting of wrestling just being another interest or thing on TV these days. I havenā€™t felt the need to hide the fact Iā€™m going to watch AEW at Wembley, which I definitely would have in the past. And this weekend, my mother in law was asking what we thought of The Iron Claw. She went on to ask how they decide who the champion will be or what ā€˜successā€™ is based on in wrestling if itā€™s not just wins or losses like in sport-sport, andĀ was actually interested in the answer.Ā Again, no way that would have happened in the past.

Besides, most people in this country have had at least one elderly relative who was super into WOS era wrestling, so they get it. They all get it, really.

Having said that, even now when I think of the atmosphere and how I felt in a particular room at Hampton Court Palace, I feel absolutely sick to my stomach.

Something was in there and it wasn't normal. Gross.

Do you remember which room? I was there recently and was told a few stories, be interesting to know if your experience happened in the same place as these ones were meant to.

Brody King is a weird one for me. At first glance he's imposing but despite the size, the tattoos and the massive beard, he's got these big puppy dog eyes which just make him look like a gentle giant. I don't buy into him as a physical force the way I should.

That aspect of him really works for me when he accompanies Julia Hart to the ring for her matches. He cares for her and looks after her, so heā€™s nice, but any bloke tries to hurt her and heā€™ll destroy them.

Disband the HOB and keep Brody and Julia as a duo, is what I think Iā€™m saying.

  4. If the story is told well, predictable doesnā€™t matter because the predictable outcome is the one we want. By all means sow doubt, add some twists and turns on the way, but if everything has been leading to the heroic babyface finally winning the big title ā€¦ everybody is going to be fine when that happens.

  5. The fact nobody on commentary mentioned anything and everyone sort of carried on as if heā€™d done the rap as normal doesnā€™t make me think ā€˜workā€™. I felt the embarrassment too.

I am disappointed in Meat Madness. Itā€™s just a triple threat with Hobbs, Wardlow and Archer? Whereā€™s Big Bill? Whereā€™s Keith Lee? Toa Liona, even? Whereā€™s the madness? WHEREā€™S THE MEAT???

Went to see Hadestown this afternoon. My wife bought tickets and I attempted to listen to the soundtrack a month or so ago, but wasn't able to focus on it. I'm glad I didn't - watching it blind was phenomenal. Fun staging, good story and great singing.Ā

    Ā

    Highly recommend it!Ā

    Ā

Edit: Also the actor who played Hades (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zachary_James) reminded me simultaneously of both Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson.Ā

Weā€™re going in June. My wife saw it in New York and itā€™s her absolute favourite, so sheā€™s built the expectations high. Iā€™ve listened to it a bit, enough to be familiar with the style, but after your post I might try not to again!

Weā€™ll be seeing Kathy & Stella Solve A Murder the same weekend. Thatā€™s a brilliant show - by far the best thing I saw at the Fringe last year and Iā€™m thrilled itā€™s getting a West End run. Seeing it in Edinburgh felt like you were catching something special just before it goes stratospheric.

  7. When Renee interviewed OC on Dynamite she listed all his friends that Roddy and Co had taken out, but didnā€™t mention Danhausen. Ah, I thought, deliberately leaving him out so he can save OC after the match.

Then he was saved by Jake Hager. Ah ah, I thought, but last we saw, Danhausen has Hagerā€™s hat! This is going somewhere.

Rampage, out comes Hager with a mascot. Ah ah ah, I thought, clearly Danhausen is in this costume and will reveal himself complete with the hat.

Then OC comes out butĀ heĀ has the hat and the mascot turned out to just be a mascot.

I like that hat. But where is Danhausen!

  8. I havenā€™t ever nearly run over anyone, but I was once showing Walt Jr from Breaking Bad round my work and he walked head first into a mirror he didnā€™t realise was a mirror. ThatĀ couldĀ have caused a fatal concussion I guess. Thatā€™s as close as I can get and when else will I get to use that anecdote?

  9. I thought it was really good, and like Devon I think it did really well balancing how to treat wrestling. My wife liked it more than I did, and while sheā€™d read the interview with Kevin in the Guardian earlier that week and knew the true story, she was still so affected by the film she had to go and have a little cry and compose herself afterwards. So it definitely worked for her as a non-fan.

    Spoiler

She said it was the scene of Kerry at the end, crossing the river and seeing all his brothers, including Jack Jr, on the other side that broke her.

    Ā

  10. There needs to be loads of run ins and other shenanigans, all leading to Cody winning clean in the biggest ā€œthank goodness for that momentā€ of all time.

But Iā€™m still worried theyā€™ll just have Roman win clean. Genuinely donā€™t know if Iā€™d rather just read the results afterwards, watching it might be too nail biting.

I loved the WrestleMe podcast but I haven't seen a new episode since 2022 on any of my podcast services. Ā How is everyone listening to it now?

    Ā

They moved to Patreon only. Itā€™s about a tenner a month but they still do a new episode every week - and if you tried it out youā€™d get the last two years of back catalogue to listen to as well.

Marc also does a fantastic monthly email newsletter that does some great deep dives into wrestling history.

  12. I've only been to a handful. The first was WWE WrestleMania Revenge in Newcastle, which had Billy Kidman vs. Rhyno, John Cena vs. JBL and a main event of Eddie Guerrero vs. Big Show.Ā

Three other WWE shows - the same tour in '06, with JBL facing Chris Benoit this time, Tatanka vs. Animal, Finlay vs. William Regal I think and a main event of Rey Mysterio vs. Mark Henry vs. Kurt Angle or maybe Randy Orton. If only there was some sort of place I could check the happenings of house shows.

One more of those in 2017, which I went to to see Shinsuke Nakamura. I didn't know it'd be against Dolph Ziggler. That one also had Sami Zayn vs. Kevin Owens, Luke Harper vs. Erick Rowan and a main event of AJ Styles vs. Randy Orton vs. Why Is Jinder Mahal In The Main Event.

I remember the NXT show in Newcastle much more clearly. Samoa Joe vs. Apollo Crews, The Revival vs. American Alpha, PAC vs. Baron Corbin, and a main event of Finn Balor vs. Sami Zayn.

Been to the occasional indy show, admittedly mostly the Dan Fitch ones because he loved an import (or borrowing them from 1PW).

The first one had PAC and Spud as part of a high fliers six way, Joe Legend vs. Jonny Storm, Sheamus vs. D'Lo Brown (and Assassin? I think) and a main event of Raven vs. Austin Aries which had a Sandman run-in. Second one featured Honky Tonk Man, Shark Boy was also there, and then PAC vs. either Jody Fleisch or Spud - one of those happened on the third show, which featured Christian Cage. There was a non-Fitch one which was meant to have D'Lo, Spike Dudley and Road Dogg but only the last one showed up, and then one more on the night of WrestleMania 23 where we got Jon Heidenreich, possibly Sheamus again and a couple of NOAH guys including Taiji Ishimori. General Trent Steel vs Iceman featured an anti-UKFF promo that convinced me to finally join this place.

The last one I went to was All In London, and that's definitely the best show I've seen live.Ā

  13. Took the liberty of updating the opening post again with this year's winners.

    Some stats!

Ā - Bryan Danielson is now a 5x (5x, 5x, 5x, 5x) UKFF wrestler of the year - that's more wins than anyone else ever.

Ā - AEW Dynamite has won best wrestling TV show five years in a row - that's the longest winning streak in that category.

Ā - The Bloodline has won best feud/angle for the second year in a row. If you count the Reigns/Jey feud from 2020 as the start of the story, it's won three years of the last four.

Ā - Shane McMahon's win in Funniest Moment means "a McMahon tears his leg muscles" is a two-time UKFF award winner.

Ā - FTR become the first 3x winners of best tag team.

Ā - Wrestle Me! has now won best podcast as many times as all the other podcasts combined. They're another 5x (etc) winner.

Ā - Nia Jax has now tied with the Great Khali for the most wins in worst wrestler.

Ā - Cody losing at WrestleMania gives WWE their first win as biggest letdown since the inception of AEW.

Ā - And finally, @Frankie CrispĀ is the only three-time Good Augene winner in UKFF history. The goodest of eggs is Frankie!

  14. Blood Meridian is incredibly well-written, but there's some absolutely horrifying imagery in it. The Road is my favourite of his I've read, his writing style suited that genre so well I think I read most of it in one sitting, and it's so immersive it felt like I was getting the breath knocked out of me every time something else happened, but I just had to know what happened next.

  15. They must have big plans in the pipeline for her when sheā€™s back. I wouldnā€™t mind Mercedes Mone coming in and taking the title off Timeless Toni in order to make a big time Mone vs Jamie Hayter match at Wembley.

Hell, with the right build they could main event Wembley with that.

Not a big enough Dr Who fan to know who it is but I got to the one after Paul McGann that looks like old Ben Kenobi. Score of 6332. Not having more than that one go though or Iā€™ll be on it all night!

Show some respect to John Hurt!Ā

The Rock and Cena vs The Miz and Truth?

Do we not count The Usos vs. Owens & Zayn from last year's WrestleMania?

If @SupremoĀ means four singles main eventers having a tag match ... lest we forget, Triple H & Michaels vs. Undertaker & Kane in Saudi, which would have been 2018ish?

  18. I gave in over Christmas and bought the DLC. Picked the game up again this week and discovered that now, if youā€™re playing with No DQ and look under the ring for a weapon, thereā€™s a chance that instead of getting an item, Danhausen will pop out and curse you. My Christian Cage was not happy and went on to lose his Ladder Match against Danielson, but itā€™s a fun little addition to the game.

  19. Great episode from start to finish this week. Iā€™ve said it before, but I think I genuinely would be fine if Hangman and Swerve fought forever. And that swinging slam Big Bill hit on Darby may be one of the best things Iā€™ve ever seen.
