O’Malley’s gonna be rocking the pink shorts on Saturday apparently. Look at the state of him. Looks like a Crayola wielding 4 year old got hold of a scarecrow.

O'Malley just looks like trailer trash who's won the lottery.

This is an absolutely stacked card with the last 3 fights all very exciting and all very hard to call.

The main event is very close, O Malley is a knock out specialist and hasn't had many grinding fights. Chito has never been knocked out and can really find that 6th gear in five round fights. Yet O Malley is the favourite coming into this fight despite the above and despite the fact he has a loss to Chito. I am excited for this one.

We don't know what BSD's ceiling is and we don't know how motivated Poirier is these days, he seems to only want big money fights or title fights, the fact he accepted this fight was very out of character. Neither know how to have a boring fight so this is going to be a war.

I love Kevin Holland and I love when the UFC sign big name fighters from other organisations, add in the fact that MVP is British, this for me makes Holland vs MVP must viewing.

I love the prelims and other main card fights too.

My biggest annoyance with the UFC right now is when they put good fights on the early pre lims (which I don't watch as I don't have fight pass) but then give us a fight night card with absolute dross from top to bottom. I wish they had Michele Perreira fight on one of those boring Apex cards that we have had recently instead of putting him on a time slot that I won't even watch.

I'm going to take a drive down to Miami tomorrow and see if I can nab a ticket from somewhere. If not, I'll just watch it at a bar or something. Would be a good card to be in attendance at.

I know I have a pop at her on here for being a boring fighter (and she is) but I feel bad now after watching this. Poor woman’s been going through some horrible shit.

PFL on Thursday, Joshua vs Ngannou on Friday…feels like the build up for this has taken a little bit of a hit. But this is a proper stacked card tonight. Just hours away now.

Has everyone forgot about this? 🤣 It’s kind of an alright card you know. Anyway…

Didn’t think I’d get around to revisiting this one but the kids are in bed and the Mrs is sick and asleep so it’s either this or drinking on my own. Saturday nights used to be better than this. Sod it. I actually barely remember this fight. Obviously I know how it ended but that’s about all I can recall of it.

So yeah, these two met back in the summer of 2020 as co-main under the Stipe vs DC rubber match. O’Malley was pretty untested at the time but had just about scraped into the rankings. I don’t think Chito was even ranked. So it was a curios choice as co-headliner but just shows how highly the top bollocks behind the scenes at UFC HQ rated O’Malley. He was undefeated at 12-0 and 9 finishes coming in and was one of the first DWCS guys the UFC machine got behind and really pushed. Chito was a step up from the guys O’Malley had been facing but he was coming off a decision loss against Song Yadong in his previous fight, taking him to 6 losses overall at that point in his career. So a step up for ‘Suga’ but not an outrageous one.

The pre-fight video is all about how O’Malley is gonna be this mega star. Again, bear in mind his best win at this point is a KO over a badly fading Eddie Wineland who was close to retiring. But he’s sat there on some makeshift throne with a jazzy gold robe on like he’s Hugh Hefner, and a dog on his lap, name dropping the likes of Michael Jordan, Muhammad Ali and Conor McGregor in comparison to himself.

🤣 Chito comes on and he’s the complete opposite. He’s got a chip on his shoulder and he’s all pissed off about the Song Yadong decision going against him.

Sean O’Malley vs Marlon Vera

UFC 252: Miocic vs Cormier 3

August 15th 2020

Las Vegas, Nevada

Commentators are Jon Anik, Joe Rogan and Dominick Cruz. Ugh. Rogan and Cruz is an abysmal combination. I’m not the biggest fan of DC on commentary but I’d even rather him than Cruz. Obviously DC had other things to do on this card though. Fight is at the shitty Apex because it’s 2020 and COVID is still in the relatively early stages of going in dry on the world. Herb Dean’s on reffing duties. And we’re off…

Round 1: O’Malley comes out right away throwing leg kicks. And after literally one or two of them Chito’s switching stances. O’Malley’s kicking the legs on both sides though, regardless of Vera’s stance. Body kicks now from ‘Suga’ and Chito’s having a hard time getting close to get in punching range. O’Malley’s throwing a lot of feints but pretty much all his offence so far has been kicks. Very few punches. About midway through the round now and…something just happened…

Yep. O’Malley’s leg appeared to buckle and at that moment his whole demeanour and body language changes. The commentators don’t even mention it, it seems like they completely missed it. Chito didn’t though. He’s immediately upped the aggression. O’Malley’s gone from being very active to just retreating now.

Again, O’Malley’s having trouble putting any weight on the right leg and now the commentators have finally twigged that something’s wrong. Chito advancing now and putting the pressure on. He smells blood. Chito kicking O’Malley’s good leg now. O’Malley still moving but it seems like he’s literally just trying to survive the round at this point. Final minute of the round and O’Malley’s trying to throw heavy punches. He knows his ankle is done and he needs to just end the fight. But his balance is gone and he falls on his arse after whiffing on a right hand. And Chito’s all the fuck over him.

It’s over. That first elbow was absolutely brutal. The sound of it was sickening, especially in the empty Apex. The commentators start saying the stoppage was “quick” but Cruz rightly shoots that talk down. O’Malley was toast. Of all the bad Herb Dean stoppages to complain about, this wasn’t one of them. And even if he’d let it go, there’s no way O’Malley was coming out for the second round with his leg in the state it was in.

Winner - Marlon Vera by TKO. Round 1 - 4:40.

Really unfortunate ending. I’m no fan of O’Malley but it must suck to suffer your first defeat like that. Of course Chito got a legitimate finish there. It’s a TKO win for him. But watching this back now, it’s hard to really take much away from this. It was early in the fight but I’ve gotta say O’Malley was well in control before the injury. Chito couldn’t get near him and got nothing done until O’Malley rolled his ankle or whatever he did. Then from that moment on, O’Malley wasn’t the same fighter. I know it can sound like excuse making and I’m the last one who’s gonna make excuses for the Skittles headed prick. But fair’s fair, that injury was a massive factor in why the fight played out how it did. You never know how it would’ve gone had the injury not happened because, although O’Malley was winning, Chito is known to let 3 or 4 minutes of a round slip by before he wakes up and inflicts a bunch of damage in the last minute or whatever. There was a lot of time in the fight to play out so maybe he would’ve warmed into it. But just looking at the less than a round it lasted, it’s undeniable that the injury was a huge momentum shifter and completely altered the course of the fight. Hopefully nothing like this happens tonight and we get to see the unfinished business settled between these two with no controversy.

There’s a cracking fight to be had here if they’re both coming in on good form. I think a lot of people might’ve just looked at the records, seen Chito got a first round stoppage the first time and assumed he’s gonna cause all sorts of grief for O’Malley but you look back at that fight and ALL his success comes from Sean’s injury. Even when he ended up on top of him dropping the fight ending elbows, it’s not like he successfully took O’Malley down. They ended up in that position solely because O’Malley’s leg gave out and he fell to his back. There’s honestly pretty much nothing from that first fight that I think has any real bearing on how this rematch goes. Guess that makes this post pretty pointless really. Although it’s a rematch, I think it’s basically a fresh fight. O’Malley’s grown a fair bit since 2020. He’s proven himself against the likes of Aljo and Yan, won the title and he’s got that bit more experience and legit confidence now that only comes with time and fighting at a higher level. But Chito’s tough and scrappy and he does have that 5 round experience whereas O’Malley’s never gone longer than 3 rounds. You’ve got to imagine they’re both gonna be bang up for this as well. O’Malley is looking to avenge his only loss and for Chito, let’s face it, this is almost certainly the best chance he’s ever gonna get to win UFC gold.

I think O’Malley’s winning but much stranger things have happened. See you on the other side of this beauty.

Cracking write ups as usual Wand. I'm mega excited for this one, probably even more than I am for UFC 300. So much to look forward to.

Really looking forward to the Porier fight to see how he looks against Benoit who looked like a beast last time out. Plenty of characters on the card, which if I'm honest I'm a bit of a sucker for. Hoping JoJo can have a good showing in her last fight too.

I'll be watching every fight on this card, night and day compared to some of the recent Apex cards which even with Wand's fantastic write ups, I've still struggled to be motivated to watch the top fights.

When I first saw O'Malley, I really wanted to root for him, because I loved his style of fighting. He looked like an MMA version of Tommy Hearns, with his movement utilising a long, rangy frame. But he's just such a cock-end. I don't think Chito gets much done, but as you say, stranger things have happened, and I'd find it very funny if Vera took the belt off him. Especially as, even if O'Malley got a rematch and won the belt back, he'd still be losing the trilogy.

Did TNT Sports change what channel this was on? Just sat down to watch it now and it hasn't recorded.

Yeah, it was listed as being on TNT Sports 2 all week. Apparently they moved it to TNT Sports 1 not long before show time. I’m guessing it fucked a lot of people up.

If you’ve got the Discovery+ app it’s all on there. Main card and prelims.

Thanks Wand. I've set the replay to record but it's only the main card,so that'll help with the prelims.
