It was supposed to be a full blown talent grabbing exercise. They wanted to sign a ton of new lads that represented the best guys in the world they could get who happened to be in that weight class to make a new show they knew serious wrestling fans would want to watch. The centrepieces they wanted were Sabre and especially Ibushi - who had given them every indication he’d be interested in signing, so they pencilled him in to win, to showcase their new star. Of course, Kota being Kota, he ummed and ahhhed about actually signing and his attitude was “maybe a bit later” because he was having characteristic second thoughts about schedule and exclusivity I.e lack of freedom to explore other things in wrestling as a whole. Plans changed for the CWC when they realised he wasn’t signing soon, he never did, 205 Live ended up what it was.

205 Live had some great short runs all the same - the period where PAC was first trying out the Bastard character, and a couple of months where Buddy Murphy was having bangers every week - but fascinating to think what it could have been if they’d been able to stick to this original plan.

It's highly possibly that in that timeframe, with the office prone to acts of pettiness, they'd have signed Kota then jobbed him out a bit before eventually embarking on his push as punishment for giving Vince a high five (as opposed to a slightly more respectful greeting for a first time meeting) backstage at TakeOver : Dallas, oblivious to who he was, pissing off quite a few staff. Which I might have dismissed as office hearsay, except Omega has confirmed that it really did happen. And if I trust any third party on the planet about all things Kota, it would be Kenny.

Children. Weird, myopic school kids with complexes. Absolutely mad that, I've never heard that story.

The version of the story I heard was that Kota Ibushi came backstage and saw "a tall man in a suit", and high-fived him, not realising it was Vince McMahon, or having any idea who Vince McMahon was. They also had to re-tape the finish for one of Kota's matches in the CWC, because he got himself counted out by not realising it was only a ten count rather than a twenty - live, they had William Regal come out and restart the match, and in the edit they just cut that part out and made it look like Kota broke the count.

I think 205 Live would have gone the same way even with Zack and Ibushi under contract. WWE doesn't do divisions well, and they'd have got bored of it and moved on, it just might have taken them slightly longer.

God, isn't this the truth. Cruiserweights losing to heavyweights is almost forgivable depending on who's where on the totem pole but too often they ended up being glorified squashes. Plus numerous instances of tag teams (even tag team champions) being sacrificed to monsters or even just Cena/Hunter/Reigns being thrown roadblocks by the nasty heel authority figures. Sucky.

JULY 2016

There's a draft on the 16th - exciting times!! For one month only I'm going to leave the format as it is before things truly start to settle down back to "Raw" and "SmackDown" shows given that there's no champion on Raw yet, the WWE Champion is going to SmackDown but still will be defending against a Raw headliner for a few more shows, and a certain Big Dog will be coming back to be crown jewel of Raw, but will be on last with SmackDown's best at the end of this month. I can't believe how many "big" or great matches take place this month both on the road and on telly. Apart from on PPV when it should matter most.

MAIN EVENTS

We've got two gates in the 8500-8700 range (not great) 1st/2nd at Sumo Hall for first Dean Ambrose vs Seth Rollins vs Kevin Owens then Ambrose vs Rollins vs Chris Jericho. 7th/9th in Oshawa and London its Ambrose vs Rollins vs AJ Styles either side of a straight up Ambrose vs Rollins 8th in Toronto (8000 at the Ricoh) and again 15th in Bridgeport, 16th-17th its back to Ambrose vs Rollins vs Owens at MSG (just 11,000) and in Glens Falls. 22nd/23rd its back to Ambrose vs Rollins in Newark and Salisbury. 29th-31st... here's the man! Roman Reigns vs AJ Styles vs Seth Rollins is a hell of a main event even without a title contested, in Tallahassee, Savannah and Augusta (GA).

2nd-3rd in Pikeville and Huntington its Kane & Big Show vs Bray Wyatt, Braun Strowman & Erick Rowan. Which isn't a match the Wyatts should lose, but they do. 9th/10th its Show vs Bray in Danville and Fort Wayne. 16th/17th the neglected stepchild that is the US title takes centre stage - it's Rusev vs Cesaro vs Sami Zayn vs Kalisto in Bangor and Augusta (ME) which to be honest with two smooth as silk wrestlers in the ring with two great bases, probably had some great sequences. 23rd in Wildwood the US belt takes a backseat to - how's this for a B show main? Roman Reigns vs Kevin Owens goes on last. If that's not crazy enough, while the three night swing through Florida and Georgia headlined by Reigns is clearly the "A show" roster, that makes 31st in Asheville the B show.... where it's Dean Ambrose vs Chris Jericho. In a streetfight. For the WWE title. Crazy, yes?

THE CARDS

It's Big Match John for the big occasion! John Cena vs AJ Styles goes 50/50 night 1 at Ryogoku Kokugikan (AJ) and at MSG (Cena) and next nights respectively (still) in Sumo Hall and Glens Falls, Cena and The Usos beat AJ, Karl Anderson & Luke Gallows in six mans. Week 1, The Miz vs Darren Young is the return of the ICT to the road - oh dear. Dolph Ziggler vs Baron Corbin returns night 2 at Ryogoku and week 2. Baron Corbin vs Titus O'Neil happens first night in Tokyo and will return for Augusta. Sasha Banks vs Summer Rae is giving The Boss a regular win. Enzo Amore & Big Cass vs The Dudley Boys continues, Goldust & R-Truth vs Tyler Breeze & Fandango seems to have bedded in for the long term, and I'm going to save myself many keystrokes - these four teams wrestle each other virtually every night of the month. Into the week thereafter, New Day vs Braun Strowman & Erick Rowan becomes our tag title match. Sami Zayn vs Kevin Owens is obviously the most popular match in Canada. Apollo Crews vs Sheamus is also back on. Usos vs Anderson & Gallows resumes - Jimmy & Jey are getting some of those wins back, and that runs for three loops. The pointless feud of Charlotte vs Natalya for the belt continues night 2 in Tokyo and its hilarious that Nattie's jobbing in Canada. Sasha's now beating Dana Brooke plus Becky Lynch vs Eva Marie runs on the same shows. It's Cesaro & Titus vs Bo Dallas & Curtis Axel, and Miz vs Young (often a heel DQ finish) continues.

Chris Jericho vs Adrian Neville goes 1-1 and Alberto Del Rio beats Zack Ryder twice in New York, plus Bray Wyatt and his two mates are now losing to all three New Day. Kane & Big Show are now dropping The Vaudevillains in Maine. Just when you thought Womens title matches couldn't get more pointless, Flair is now defending against Alicia Fox, the living definition of just there. Nattie doing jobs to Becky in the North East then Salisbury is far more befitting HER status as permanent loser. Also in that third week we add Mark Henry & Jack Swagger vs Dallas & Axel, Sasha's back beating Summer, it's still Miz vs Young and Crews vs Sheamus. Week 4, Young finally leaves behind beating Miz without winning his belt, to tag with Ryder to beat The Ascension. Crews starts beating Aiden English and The Shining Stars beat Swagger & Sin Cara. Month end, Jimmy Uso is injured again so Jey tags with Ryder and the makeshift duo still beat Gallows & Anderson (which I don't like), the reunited Prime Time Players beat the Outcasts, it's Sin Cara vs Viktor in singles, Crews vs Sheamus is back on, its again Ziggler vs Corbin in Asheville, still Zayn vs Owens (resumed in Newark) New Day vs Wyatt Family and Charlotte vs Fox.

VARIATIONS - SOME FUCKING BELTERS THIS MONTH

Starting in Tokyo, fairly wise additions for local interest has Shinsuke Nakamura beating Y2J first night and Owens on night 2 (whichever doesn't main event) and likewise Asuka doing opponent swaps with Charlotte, beating Natalya on night 1 (when its Charlotte vs Becky) and Lynch on night 2. Tag title has New Day vs Vaudevillains vs Usos vs Anderson & Gallows first night then straight New Day vs Vaudevillains night 2, and finally spare man Axel loses to whoever isn't with Corbin - losing to Ziggler on Friday and Titus on Saturday. Crews beats Dallas in Pikeville then Heath Slater in Huntington, while in Pikeville a contenders battle royal featuring the rest of the card plus Zayn and Cesaro is pre-cursor to Rusev vs Zayn, next night there are extra bodies in town so out the chute its Rusev vs Zayn vs Cesaro vs Sheamus vs Kalisto. In Toronto Sin Cara and Titus defeat the Social Outcasts, Sheamus is off, and it Styles vs Cesaro (!). In London Sheamus beats Sin Cara then issues an open challenge where upon he loses to Crews as he did in Oshawa. Danville has Rusev vs Swagger, in Fort Wayne it's Rusev vs Kalisto and Kane & Swagger vs Vaudevillains. Unique to Bridgeport are Swagger vs Del Rio and Henry & Ryder vs the Outcasts, plus Titus beats Slater in Bangor. Newark has Nattie vs Fox and in Salisbury Styles vs Neville and Kofi vs Rowan in singles. Wildwood get Sasha & Fox vs Charlotte & Summer, Rusev vs Zayn vs Kalisto and Cesaro vs Titus. In Tallahassee only there's no Zayn so Kev pins Neville. Asheville has one reprisal of Kalisto vs Del Rio, Axel loses to Swagger then issues the old open challenge and gets swatted by Kane, there's Cesaro & Nevile vs The Vaudevillains and its Sasha & Becky vs Summer & Dana.

MAIN EVENTS - NXT

7th in Fort Pierce Hideo Itami, Andrade Almas & Oney Lorcan vs Austin Aries & The Revival is a bit random, next night in Venice Itami & Andrade lose to Aries and champ Samoa Joe, 9th in Tampa Joe vs No Way Jose is not a title match I expected to have happened. 14th-16th we've got crowds around 1000-2000 for Finn Balor & Shinsuke Nakamura vs Samoa Joe & Bobby Roode going non finishes leading to (OOF) Balor, Nakamura & American Alpha vs Joe, Roode & The Revival in Indianapolis, and a wild-sounding 10-person with Bayley with the goodies and Alexa Bliss with the baddies in Louisville either side of Balor vs Roode and the rest in a six man in Highland Heights KY. it's weirder still 21st-23rd... Itami & TM61 vs Buddy Murphy & Authors Of Pain in Lakeland, Nakamura vs Murphy in singles in Ocala, then Nakamura/Miller/Thorne vs Tino Sabbatelli & Revival in Cocoa. 28th and 30th Balor & Nakamura vs Joe & Roode is finally happening to a finish in San Antonio and Houston either side of Nakamura & Andrade beating Joe & Bob in, ironically, Robstown.

16th in Largo with all the superstars in Louisville Mojo Rawley vs Buddy Murphy on last and TM61 vs Authors Of Pain underneath - the Aussies actually win that one, but Tokka and Rahzar avenge that 29th in Orlando, then next night in Jacksonville they team to Riddick Moss to lose to No Way Jose, Angelo Dawkins & Oney Lorcan.

THE CARDS

Running mid month is The Revival vs American Alpha for the belts half way up the card act as a pre-cursor to the multi-men tags then Revival vs Johnny Gargano & Tommaso Ciampa finally kicks off in Texas along with Hideo Itami vs Austin Aries. There’s Asuka vs Billie Kay for the belt on and off mid month (repeats in Lakeland) concurrent to Bayley vs Alexa Bliss - Bayley vs Billie repeats in Venice and Highland Heights too. Carmella & Aliyah vs Mandy Rose & Daria repeats in Tampa and Largo and BayMella vs Fire & Ice runs Fort Pierce and all the Texas shows - by which time Asuka is back to defending against Nia Jax. Either side, Ember Moon and Billie swap wins (!) in Tampa and Orlando. Also mid month are multiple instances of Itami vs Angelo Dawkins, No Way Jose vs Hugo Knox and Andrade Almas vs Wesley Blake - which continues into Texas, where there's also Mojo Rawley vs Buddy Murphy.

VARIATIONS - SELECTED

In Fort Pierce we have Alpha vs TM61 and Bliss vs Moon, in Venice, Nakamura vs Murphy, TM61 vs Alexander Wolfe & Sawyer Fulton and Carmella vs Aliyah. Tampa sees Aries vs our favourite goalie, Itami vs Josh Woods and Alpha vs Wolfe & Fulton once again. In Kentucky a shuffle of three repeat matches either side have Jose vs Knox, Dawkins vs Almas and Itami vs Blake. It’s Ember v Liv Morgan in Largo, in Ocala Asuka actually defends against Moon rather sooner than it would have been seen as a huge deal, plus Itami beats Patrick Clark which would have been very different later. Cocoa has two singles with Carmella vs Mandy and Daria vs Liv. Smalltown in Texas sees old mates Finn Balor & Itami beating Revival non title (boooo), Aries vs Ciampa (oooo) and Gargano vs Murphy. In Orlando Aliyah beats Liv (upset?) then in Jacksonville Billie continues her good form beating Morgan and Ember pins Aliyah.

TVs

5th in Toledo.... hey, let's get Y2J to do another job on telly! This one's for Zayn. 11th Raw in Detroit (11,500+) Young wins a battle royal on TV to become top contender to Miz, as reflected on the road, and dark Deano & Zayn beat Rollins & AJ. Next night in Grand Rapids Neville beats Dallas before Main Event, and Ryder goes over Del Rio in a match taped in the middle of SmackDown but that never airs. 13th in Full Sail the NXT TVs have Lorcan beat Sabbatelli dark, Santana Garrett does a job for Billie and they showcase Kota Ibushi going over Murphy, Next night, another dark match has CWC also rans Sean Maluta & Mustafa Ali do a dark job to TM61 and round 2 is recorded - Yoshihiro Tajiri bows out to Gran Metalik, and there's advancement for Akira Tozawa, Brian Kendrick, Zack Sabre Jr and Ibushi to the quarters. 19th SmackDown goes live and Deano retains over Rollins in a high profile main. Battleground is a completely forgettable PPV with three matches with major players or champions wasted in meaningless tags, a non finish in Miz vs Young and only Ambrose vs Rollins vs Reigns worth watching again. Next night the new era for Raw kicks off in earnest in Pittsburgh (9500) - Balor debuts by going over Cesaro, Owens and Rusev in a four way then knocking off Reigns CLEAN AS A SHEET on route to a SummerSlam meeting with "top seed" Rollins to crown a first Universal champ. Plus, Britt Baker does a job for Nia, James Ellsworth loses to Braun, Sasha knocks off Charlotte to win the belt and dark, Ambrose & Cena beat Rollins & AJ (fuck). Finally 26th in Buffalo Kalisto pins Viktor before SmackDown, Randy Orton returns to pin Miz, Ziggler gets promoted to top contender winning a six-corners match and dark, Deano and Roman beat Rollins & Wyatt.

NON-TITLE WHINING

Beaten on TV this month : The Miz, obviously (Intercontinental Champ) by Ambrose, and again by Orton.

DEPARTURES

The house show gigs for Mark Henry this month are the end of him on the road. His last few scattered matches for the company are the occasional TV job to a Rusev or Strowman, the 2017 Rumble and eventually the "Greatest Royal Rumble" on one of those daft Saudi shows in 2018 - he hasn't wrestled again since. A peculiar career, it took forever for him to find his groove and even then there was a lot of dross, but it's fair to say, even for a fan as fussy as me, that when he was at his best, and with the right opponents, he was very fucking good indeed on occasion.

We also have the last house shows for Eva Marie before one of the most protracted exits of all time. She gets a Wellness suspension for Adderall despite her claims she can produce a prescription. She's replaced by Nikki at SummerSlam, is pursuing outside interests by new year and incredibly is finally released in August 2017. Fittingly, her return will take a million years to get off the ground too, and go nowhere just like this run.

Nakamura vs Y2J

Cena vs Styles in Tokyo

AUGUST 2016

Some absolutely cracking shows this month. Though far fewer of them. Gates are up too, notably for TV tapings.

MAIN EVENTS

6th-7th in Stockton and Fresno we have Dean Ambrose vs AJ Styles for the belt, then 10th-14th the champ gets a rest and we return to John Cena vs Styles - alternating with the Big Dog on last - in Auckland (8000), Melbourne (10,500), Adelaide (8000) and Sydney (14,000). Eclectic month for Deano, 13th/14th in Hidalgo and Laredo its more triangle matches vs Dolph Ziggler vs Alberto Del Rio, then 26th-28th its with AJ and Bray Wyatt in Abilene, San Angelo and San Antonio before 29th in Texarkana AJ's back with Big Match John so its Ambrose vs Wyatt vs Ziggler - 3000 at Four States Fairgrounds.

27th-28th - this is so weird to consider the B show! - its Roman Reigns vs Seth Rollins in Puebla de Zaragoza (around 4000) and Leon (3500), Mexico.

THE CARDS

Roman Reigns vs Seth Rollins runs four nights out of the first six, with Finn Balor vs Chris Jericho as excellent wins for the main eventer in waiting in Auckland and Sydney, with those two matches conflated in a tag in Melbourne and Adelaide. There's Randy Orton vs Bray Wyatt and Sami Zayn vs Baron Corbin in California, Zayn vs Kevin Owens in Australasia and New Day vs Karl Anderson & Luke Gallows for the tag belts throughout. Cesaro vs Sheamus in Cali (on top of 7 matches they're about to have on TV) then Apollo Crews vs Sheamus down under complete a band run of form for the Celtic Warrior. There's The Miz vs Darren Young vs Titus O'Neil for the ICT then Rusev against Titus for the UST abroad - Titus is challenging for gold both Home And Away. There's Becky Lynch & Carmella vs Natalya & Alexa Bliss in Stockton & Fresno shining a light on the new NXT callups, and on tour Sasha Banks vs Charlotte for the belt and Braun Strowman vs Jey Uso.

Mid week more monster 9 match cards have Miz vs Kane for the ICT, a return to Enzo Amore & Big Cass vs The Dudley Boys, Lynch & Naomi vs Nattie & Summer Rae, Cesaro, Sin Cara, Goldust and R-Truth vs The Shining Stars, Tyler Breeze & Fandango, Zack Ryder vs Heath Slater, Adrian Neville vs Bo Dallas, Corbin beating Jack Swagger and reprisal of Orton vs Wyatt. Month end Texan run Dolph Ziggler beats Sheamus, Kane beats Corbin, Jericho's back with Neville, Cass & Enzo are back with The Vaudevillains, Becky & Alicia Fox beat Nat and Dana Brooke, Golden Truth, Swagger and Sin Cara beat the Stars and The Ascension, and its the same Miz vs Player vs Player they did in Cali. Charlotte continues losing (yay!) in Mexico, this time to Bayley, its Rusev vs Cesaro for the UST, Jey's beating Curtis Axel, Crews pins Slater, Ryder and Hype Bros mate Mojo Rawley beat Breezango and its again New Day vs the Club.

VARIATIONS

In Stockton Jey beats Fandango then in Fresno, Tyler - these were doubtless meant to be tags before Jimmy got hurt. Mostly unique matches in Texarkana - Kane vs Erick Rowan, Miz vs Crews, Jimmy Uso back tagging with Jey against Gotch & English, Hype Bros & American Alpha vs Ascension & Breezango, Becky vs Nattie and Corbin beating Slater.

MAIN EVENTS - NXT

4th in Birmingham and 6th in New Orleans its Shinsuke Nakamura & Andrade Almas vs Samoa Joe & Bobby Roode either side of nearly 1000 in Pensacola getting Shinsuke and No Way Jose losing to Joe and Austin Aries. 11th in Tampa we've got Nakamura, Jose & Tino Sabbatelli vs Joe and Authors Of Pain, 12th in Venice the champ's off so Asuka vs Ember Moon goes on last, 13th in Fort Pierce... deja vu, it's Joe vs Jose for the gold. By 26th, Nakamura has won the belt and he's defending against... err, Wesley Blake. Next night in Jacksonville Hideo Itami vs Aries makes a bit more sense as a main event.

Yes, we're still running B shows back in home base Florida in front of 300 people while proper matches happen elsewhere. It's Hideo Itami vs Wesley Blake 4th-5th in Winter Haven and Gainesville then 6th in Largo... Christ, Blake loses to Tino Sabbatelli on last.

THE CARDS

We have The Revival vs Johnny Gargano & Tomasso Ciampa for the belts with either pinfalls or DQ wins for the challengers, then in Jacksonville DIY beat them non title. Austin Aries vs Mojo Rawley goes 50/50 (!) early month. Asuka vs Ember Moon repeats in Pensacola and Venice on the same nights as Billie Kay vs Daria (Berenato) - which repeats in Jacksonville - otherwise Billie challenges for the belt week one concurrent to Moon vs Daria. Early month cards also have Authors Of Pain vs Heavy Machinery, No Way Jose vs Riddick Moss and Oney Lorcan vs Buddy Murphy... there's no more consistency after that.

VARIATIONS - ASSORTED

Among many swaps in Pensacola, the shuffle to the main event tag lands Andrade Almas beating Moss and Bobby Roode pinning Lorcan - yes, if you paid attention, it leaves Mojo with Murphy. Bayley beats Aliyah in Gainesville and Danielle Kamela (who will later be Vanessa Borne) in Largo, Liv Morgan loses to the late Sara Lee and Mandy Rose to Aliyah in Winter Haven, in Gainesville Rose pins Morgan, Liv makes it 0 from 3 vs Aliyah in Largo. In Tampa there's Aries beating Patrick Clark, Murphy jobs for Andrade, Ember pins Mandy and Billie & Aliyah beat Morgan & Lee. In Venice Revival defend against Otis & Tucker, in Fort Pierce a fantastic oddball mixed tag has Shinsuke Nakamura & Daria beat Billie & Moss, Hideo Itami beats Noah Potjes (Kona Reeves) and Moon, Morgan & Kamela beat Mandy, Aliyah & Nikki Glencross.... it's fitting that there was a Moon on Kamela's side, yes? In Citrus Springs, Roode vs Jose and Andrade vs Tye Dillinger are back on, Asuka & Daria beat Mandy & Billie and Ember pins Aliyah, next night in Jacksonville Roode pins Moss and Ember pins "Nikki Cross."

Hey... I just realized that if Sara Lee had been in Riott Squad instead of Sarah Logan... captained by Ruby Riott who was Heidi Lovelace... the faction would have been Heidi/Lee/Morgan. Heh. One for the older fans.

TVs

1st in Atlanta a healthy 11,500+ turn up for Raw in Atlanta, one of the more interesting matches to ever air on modern Superstars has Jericho & Charlotte win a mixed tag over Enzo & Sasha, Mark Henry does one of his increasingly-few TV appearances to put Rusev over strong, Nia pins Aerial Monroe (who will be Big Swole), Jinder Mahal returns to pin Slater to "win a new contract" and dark, the Coliseum Video Tag Team Mega Match Of The Month has Cena, Reigns and Ambrose go over Rollins, Styles & Owens. Next night in Nashville Kane pinning John Skyler in a 10 second squash is an odd start before cameras, after them Cena & Reigns beat Rollins & Styles. 8th in Anaheim (11,000+ in a fickle market) on Raw the Dudleys put over Neville & Sin Cara, Rusev gets another good defence against Cesaro, and dark Orton continues to get his eye back in vs Bray, as per the house shows. Next night in Bakersfield Alexa makes her SmackDown bow upsetting Becky, Rhino pins Slater to prevent him "getting a contract," and dark Ambrose beats Bray by DQ. 15th in Corpus Christi, New Day win their last defence against the Dudleys, Nia beats Rachel Levy (Shimmer fans know her as Delilah Doom), and dark Cena & Ambrose beat Rollins & Jericho. Next night in Austin Main Event has Rhino job for Corbin and Kane beat Ricky Starks, Slater beats Orton in a brief DQ (lol), and TWO dark matches have Ziggler beat Miz non title (grrr) and Reigns pin Rollins. 20th at the Barclays a wildly successful (15,500+) TakeOver Brooklyn II has as stunning Revival/DIY match and Nakamura relieves Joe of the big belt. Next night (near 16,000) SummerSlam has ups and downs - the Orton vs Brock Lesnar match is weirdly inconsequential for Brock in the big picture, the DQ in New Day vs Club is wildly disappointing, the finish to Sasha vs Charlotte is AWFUL and makes Sasha look stupid and a choke artist (plenty of that to come)... but there's an unbelievable feeling of "the future is now" with Ziggler presented as a credible thread to still-fresh WWE Champion Ambrose, Balor pinning Rollins clean to win the "Universal" title (sadly getting injured in the process) and AJ Styles pinning John Cena clean as a fucking sheet after a great match. Oh, and Nikki Bella is back in the ring after his long injury layoff. Overall the show is really good even without Reigns even getting a match. Next night another near 16,000 for Raw see all the contenders matches for the forthcoming decision match for the U title, and dark Cena & Ambrose vs Rollins & Styles again. Night after in Uncasville Kane's warming them up again squashing Alex Reynolds, Rhino jobs for Rowan on Main Event, SmackDown's tag title tournament starts, and dark Cena, Reigns and Ambrose beat Rollins, Bray & Rowan. Full Sail's TVs on 25th have another Daria vs Billie match as the dark opener, Asuka beats Kamela between episodes, and for TV Aries vs Almas is the biggest match but we have Leah Von Dutch doing a job for Ember and "Rachel Fazio" (Ellering) for Liv. Next night for the CWC tapings there's nothing special about the smattering of bonus matches apart Itami showing up to beat an Ernest Alexander, and in the quarters Brian Kendrick puts over Kota Ibushi, and TJP, Gran Metalik and Zack Sabre Jr book their places too. 29th Raw in Houston (near 9000 is OK) Hunter betrays Rollins and as a consequence Kevin Owens becomes Raw's World Champion in a pretty big shock at the time, as the build starts for the HHH v Rollins match they had wanted at Mania 32. Finally next night in Dallas, Slater & Rhino unite to win their quarter final against..... The Headbangers!?!? Well, between the breadth of scope for younger and worldwide talent and bring back old faces, there's certainly a warm, fuzzy "am I watching Nitro" vibe at the minute.

DEPARTURES

Alberto Del Rio is suspended for his first Wellness violation and by month end, he's declaring that he's going to exercise a clause to get out of his contract because he's fed up of false promises made since he returned - early September, they release him. These are the last road matches for The Dudley Boys after their one year deal expires. D-Von will go into retirement after a short indy run and Bubba will revert to Bully Ray all over the place but as of September 2023, "Team 3D" have risen from the ashes and D-Von unretired.

Finish to the dark tag at the Barclays

SEPTEMBER 2016
This is the first real month of revived split-brand shows.... it's a relief to be able to return to this format to be honest. And it's a phenomenal month for other reasons.

MAIN EVENTS - RAW
7th in London there's a cracking 13,750 for the O2 as a one off then 9th/10th we're off to the East for gigs in Manila (11,500+) and Shanghai topped with Kevin Owens vs Sami Zayn vs Seth Rollins for the World title all three nights, which then continues 16th-18th in Louisville, Evansville and Huntsville, and 23rd/24th in Moline and Rosemont (topical) - 10,000+ at the AllState, maybe they were hoping for Punk too.

THE CARDS
Roman Reigns vs Chris Jericho is a hell of a semi main abroad and there's also John Cena vs Big Show for novelty of an AA to the big lad. Charlotte vs Sasha Banks and New Day vs Karl Anderson & Luke Gallows vs The Shining Stars are our title matches. We've also got Cesaro vs Sheamus - as though those two haven't wrestled enough lately (actually part of the Best Of 7 in London) - Braun Strowman vs Goldust and Adrian Neville vs Curtis Axel. Mid month Rusev vs Reigns for the US title is back on (DQ finish), New Day now defend against the Stars and Enzo Amore & Big Cass, the womens match is now a six-woman with The Boss, Bayley and Alicia Fox vs Flair, Nia Jax and Dana Brooke, Cesaro's pinning Karl, Goldie and R-Truth are back with Axel & Bo Dallas, Braun beats Sin Cara and the PTP are back to fighting each other with Darren Young vs Titus O'Neil. Finally in Illinois aside from some big name variations its now Young & Golden Truth beating Titus, Axel & Dallas, we're back to Cesaro vs Sheamus, plus Rusev vs Reigns, Braun vs Sin Cara and the six-woman are unchanged and the tag title match repeats in Moline.

VARIATIONS
Cena's not in London so Show beats Primo & Epico in a handicap, New Day vs Club reprises and Neville pins Dallas - Tian Bin vs Dallas is a tryout for the local in Shanghai. Neville pinning "the Machine Gun" is unique to Moline, in suburban Chicago they throw nearly everything at it - Brock Lesnar beats (SmackDown's) Randy Orton in a no DQ rematch, Jericho works Neville again, Mark Henry squashes Epico and its New Day vs Bullet Club vs Cass & Enzo.

MAIN EVENTS - SMACKDOWN
10th in Raleigh the Saturday of Backlash its Dean Ambrose vs AJ Styles vs Dolph Ziggler for their World title, 12th in Fairfax (just 2000 even with Big Match John wrestling) and 17th in Springfield MO after the change and sandwiching the next TVs its a straight Styles vs Ambrose rematch before three ways resume 18th/19th in North Little Rock and Tupelo. 24th-26th we upgrade a little - its Styles vs Ambrose vs John Cena in Hershey, State College and Wheeling.

THE CARDS
Randy Orton vs Bray Wyatt is back for the mid month shows (inbetween Bray losing to Kane in only Raleigh and Hershey) and Apollo Crews vs The Miz has Miz losing non title matches because on TV he's told GM Daniel Bryan that he's not defending the title until he renegotiates his contract - LOL! Rhino & Heath Slater vs The Usos vs Tyler Breeze & Fandango goes on for the tag belts. Two rounds of Becky Lynch & Naomi vs Alexa Bliss & Natalya give way to continuation of the six-woman fun with Nikki Bella for the babyfaces (mis-cast there for me, Clive) and Carmella for the heels. There's Jack Swagger vs Baron Corbin, Hype Bros vs The Ascension and a rotating singles with either of The Vaudevillains losing to Jason Jordan - Gable has a knock. Dolph Ziggler vs Miz rematches start in Fairfax and continue month end where we add Crews vs Erick Rowan, Slater & Rhino defending against Jimmy & Jey occurs in Fairfax and Wheeling only either side of four ways with the Usos, Jordan & Chad Gable and Breezango. It's still Swagger vs Corbin, Hype Bros vs Ascension and the six-woman tag.

VARIATIONS
In Fairfax Bray & Rowan lose to Orton & John Cena. Otherwise Raleigh has Usos vs Fandango, a one off of Bella vs Mella and a 10 man where Slater, Rhino, Jordan and the Bros beat Corbin, the 'Villains and the Ascension, then in Fairfax there's Corbin vs Crews and Jordan/Mojo/Ryder beat Vaudevillains & Konnor. In Wheeling with two teams removed from the title match there's also Bros & Alpha vs Ascension & Breezango.

MAIN EVENTS - NXT
It's Shinsuke Nakamura, Tye Dillinger & Asuka vs Wesley Blake, Riddick Moss & Billie Kay 8th in Largo and Nakamura & TM61 vs Blake & Authors Of Pain 9th in Gainesville. 16th in Des Moines Shinsuke & No Way Jose again beat Samoa Joe & Bobby Roode, next night in Ralston NE Nakamura & his Aussie mates drop Joe & The Revival, 18th in St Paul Nakamura & Jose beat Joe & Riddick Moss. Some really random mix/matching otherwise - 22nd in Venice Miller & Thorne tag with Ember Moon to face Alexander Wolfe, Sawyer Fulton & Nikki Cross. Next night in Jacksonville its another random title shot for Jose, at Shinsuke. 29th in Lakeland TM61 tag with Dillinger to face Wolfe, Fulton & Elias Samson then 30th in Orlando Nakamura, Dillinger & Jose beat Buddy Murphy and AoP.

B shows! 16th-17th Andrade Almas vs Cedric Alexander is the biggest match in both Cocoa and Tampa.

THE CARDS
Two feuds that continue mid month are Hideo Itami vs Austin Aries and Asuka vs Ember Moon for the title. There's Rich Swann vs Tino Sabbatelli mid month plus Heavy Machinery vs Alexander Wolfe & Sawyer Fulton in Gainesville, Cocoa and Jacksonville. Cedric Alexander vs Wesley Blake month end goes well for Cedric, but inbetween he goes 50/50 with Riddick Moss. There's Daria vs Peyton Royce going 2-1 mid month and in Venice, Mandy Rose vs Liv Morgan in Largo and Cocoa and Mandy goes 50/50 with Aliyah in Tampa and Venice.

VARIATIONS OF INTEREST
Itami pins Buddy Murphy and Authors Of Pain beat Heavy Machinery in Largo. Itami pins Patrick Clark, Andrade Almas pins Murphy, Moon pins Mandy and Daria beats Aliyah in Gainesville. We have The Revival vs TM61 and Tye Dillinger vs Moss in Des Moines. It's Asuka vs Daria, Bobby Roode vs No Way Jose and Ember vs Peyton in Ralston, Roode vs Dillinger in St Paul. Oney Lorcan beats Blake in Cocoa and Murphy in Tampa, Aliyah loses to Billie Kay in Cocoa, in Tampa Billie loses to Liv. In Venice Itami drops Noah Potjes, in Jacksonville it's Peyton vs Aliyah, Dillinger vs Murphy and Asuka & Daria vs Mandy & Billie. Lakeland, Almas beats Lorcan, Asuka & Ember beat the Iiconics to be and FUCKING LOL - Aliyah beats Bianca Belair. Finally unique to Orlando, Asuka retains over Billie, Itami beats Blake, Wolfe & Fulton beat TM61 and Daria beats Mandy - it just breaks my heart to see them fighting.

TVs
6th SmackDown in Lincoln there's another Cena & Ambrose vs Styles & Wyatt dark tag main plus heirs apparent American Alpha (whoops) and Slater & Rhino make the tag title final. Backlash is a momentous PPV with the injury to Gable affording The Usos a route into the final instead but they go with a feelgood win for Slater & Rhino, plus Becky wins the six-way to become first SmackDown Womens Champion, and - can we touch on this? AJ Styles wins the WWE title from Dean Ambrose in the main event. Having argued the toss early year about why AJ didn't go to NXT (as some predicted) - you don't lure someone away from renewing with New Japan and pay them "AJ Styles money" to let them sit in developmental for six months before getting some ROI - I was still stunned they went all the way with AJ so soon, even if he was obviously good enough. 14th at Full Sail the CWC finals see Zack Sabre Jr and Kota Ibushi upset by Gran Metalik and TJP respectively before a final which Perkins wins both the tournament and the new Cruiserweight title. Next night the NXT tapings have Jack Gallagher vs Noam Dar as a dark opener, and the Dusty Classic begins. 19th in Memphis they actually let Universal champ Owens lose a cage match by escape to Roman even though the point of the aftermath is to continue Owens vs Rollins and push Reigns vs Rusev... so, WHY could Rusev not have cost Roman the match instead of the champ lose??? Plus, Brian Kendrick has not only got himself signed, he's winning a top contenders match. Next night in Birmingham Cena loses to Ambrose - nice rub, that. Clash of the Champions that Sunday is pretty forgettable but we should note Reigns knocks off Rusev for the UST. Finally 27th SmackDown in Cleveland (a disappointing 6400) has the Styles/Ambrose rematch and dark, Orton & Ziggler beat Wyatt & Miz.

NON TITLE WHINING
Beaten on TV this month : Charlotte (Raw Womens Champion) by Bayley, New Day (Raw tag team champions) by Gallows & Anderson, Owens (RAW WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION) by Reigns IN A FUCKING CAGE MATCH NO LESS. Hang on... they didn't job any champions on SmackDown. Huh.

DEPARTURES - NONE, I think

OCTOBER 2016

You know what? SmackDown has the WWE title and the WWE Champion, AND John Cena... they're going first.

MAIN EVENTS - SMACKDOWN

Big match John is working a full time schedule at present! 1st-3rd it’s still AJ Styles vs John Cena vs Dean Ambrose for the WWE title in Vegas, Ontario (CA) and Palm Springs, 8th in Portland (OR), 10th in Reno and 15th in Phoenix (6000 only) before its Styles vs Ambrose 15th-16th in Nampa ID and Laramie WY, 22nd-24th in Sioux City, Des Moines and Dubuque and again 30th/31st in Allentown and Trenton.

THE CARDS

Huge 9 match cards in week 1 have continuation of Randy Orton vs Bray Wyatt and The Miz vs Dolph Ziggler non title plus Kane vs Tyler Breeze. Tag title is still Heath Slater & Rhino vs The Usos, women’s champ is in a handicap - Becky Lynch & Nikki Bella vs Alexa Bliss, Natalya & Carmella - though Becky & Naomi winning the same handicap sandwiches the month in Palm Springs and Trenton. There’s also Baron Corbin vs Jack Swagger, Apollo Crews vs Curt Hawkins and American Alpha & The Hype Bros vs The Vaudevillains & The Ascension (which we will return to in Iowa). Most matches are unchanged week 2 except Naomi and Bella are winning that handicap match. Mid month much of the same except Dolph now defends the ICT against Breeze, Hawkins does an open challenge after losing to Apollo and gets crushed by Kane (Miz is off) and it’s Alpha vs Usos with intention of Rhino & Slater in the 8-man but that’s only completed in Phoenix. Kane vs Bray and Miz losing to Apollo are back on in Iowa and we pick up Kalisto vs Breeze and Lynch/Naomi/Emmalina (LOL) over Alexa/Nattie/Carmella - tag title and Corbin/Swagger unchanged, the rest you've read. Month end in the North East it's all change - fellow babyfaces Orton and Kane (I think?) have streetfights with each other, tag title is now Slater & Rhino vs Alpha vs Usos, Ziggler vs Miz is back on as a title match, it's Swagger vs Breeze and back to Corbin vs Kalisto plus Crews & the Hype Bros vs Hawkins & the Vaudevillains.

VARIATIONS

In Phoenix Nikki & Naomi team with Emma to beat the three heels, in Nampa with Rhino injured Slater/Ryder/Mojo beat Gotch and the Ascension and Naomi & Emma beat the heel trio in a handicap, then in Laramie Heath & the Bros beat Vaudevillains & Viktor and, umm, Naomi tags with Natalya to beat Bliss & Mella. Even though Nattie is a baddie every other night of the month. Sioux City is the only show in week 4 that gets Becky vs Bliss for the belt and Emma/Naomi vs Nattie & Mella as a tag. Nattie misses Allentown so uniquely there its Becky & Naomi vs Alexa & Carmella 2 on 2.

MAIN EVENTS - RAW

Monster business on a Central American tour - two back to back 11,000 gates in Santiago 5th-6th for Roman Reigns vs Rusev for the UST first night then Kevin Owens vs Seth Rollins for the U title second, which also goes on last to a more modest 2500 7th in Lima but then 8th there’s 15,000 in Quito. 14th in Edmonton it’s Owens vs Rollins vs Sami Zayn (4500 disappointed) then 15th in Calgary (4500 again) and 16th in Colorado Springs it’s Owens vs Rollins again, likewise 21st in Hammond then 22nd/23rd in Milwaukee and Rochester (MN) it’s back to Owens vs Rollins vs Zayn.

THE CARDS

On tour it’s Roman Reigns vs Rusev every night. Tag title is usually New Day vs Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson vs Sheamus & Cesaro (rivals turned partners) and Sasha Banks vs Charlotte continues for the Women’s title. There are three rounds of Braun Strowman vs Sin Cara, Adrian Neville & Darren Young vs Titus O’Neil & Bo Dallas and Bayley & Alicia Fox vs Nia Jax & Dana Brooke and two each of Sami Zayn vs Luke Harper and Goldust, R-Truth, Enzo Amore & Big Cass vs Curtis Axel, Jinder Mahal & The Shining Stars. Sasha/Bayley/Fox vs Charlotte/Nia/Dana goes down on Santiago night 2's shuffle and will come back round in week 3, as does New Day vs Club vs Cass & Enzo night 2 and in Hammond. Chris Jericho putting over Cesaro in Edmonton leads into more meetings week 3. Two instances of new tag title four way of New Day vs Club vs Cass & Enzo vs The Bar hit Calgary & Colorado Springs. Lots of underneath shuffling but Neville vs Jinder does happen twice and Neville vs Dallas happens in Calgary and also in week 3. Our other two title matches, Braun vs Sin Cara and the women’s tag continue through Alberta/Colorado. In the Mid West, it becomes New Day vs Bullet Club 2 on 2 and we have a 10-man with Cass, Enzo, Young and the Golden Truth vs Jinder, Titus, Axel and the Stars. Still Rusev vs Reigns, Braun vs Sin Cara and everything else mentioned above.

VARIATIONS

5th in Santiago it’s Seth Rollins & Zayn vs Kevin Owens & Harper midcard instead of two singles, next night it’s shuffled for fans attending both - with Cass & Enzo in the tag title match it's Sheamus & Cesaro into the 8-man, Neville jobs for Braun, Zayn tags with Young and Sin Cara actually beats Harper. In Quito only Truth and Axel have a night off so the rest fight a six-man. Edmonton has Cass & Enzo vs the Club and Truth beats Jinder before his whining gets him beaten by Neville too. Y2J puts Zayn over in Calgary, Neville beats Axel after he beats Dallas, Truth & Young beat Titus & Jinder. In Colorado Springs Mahal gets himself beaten by Zayn after Neville, Young and Golden Truth beat Titus/Dallas/Axel. In Hammond with Y2J absent, Zayn removed from main event and Cass & Enzo moved to the tag title match, the babyface team in the 10 man is Cesaro/Zayn/Young/Truth/Goldie.

MAIN EVENTS - NXT

1st in Largo it's another oddball main - Shinsuke Nakamura & Hideo Itami vs Riddick Moss & Tino Sabbatelli. 6th in Norfolk and 8th in Belair MD its Nakamura & Tye Dillinger vs Samoa Joe & Austin Aries, inbetween in Richmond its another round of Shinsuke & No Way Jose vs Joe & Bobby Roode. 14th in Fort Pierce Roode actually loses to Dillinger on last, 15th in Winter Haven Nakamura again teams with TM61 against Moss, Sabbatelli and a lonely Dash Wilder. 20th in Lakeland there are no big guns about so Asuka vs Ember Moon (battle royal winner) goes on last, 21st in Tampa Nakamura teams with Dillinger and Cedric Alexander against Joe, Wesley Blake and Steve Cutler, next night in Ocala Shinsuke, Oney Lorcan and Rich Swann lose to the Sanity lads - Eric Young, Alexander Wolfe & Sawyer Fulton. Month end there’s a huge five night run through California - 26th in Fresno it’s Nakamura & Jose vs Joe & Aries, 27th in Sacramento Shinsuke/TM61 vs Joe and Authors of Pain, the Friday in San Jose (2000) Nakamura & Dillinger vs Joe & Roode where two Dusty Classic quarter finals are taped to air on TV, Saturday in Bakersfield (1200) Nakamura vs Roode for the title and Sunday in LA (2400) Nakamura vs Joe vs Young during which the two Dusty semi finals are taped.

B shows - while the best of the best are in California, the rest keep the flag flying in community centres and armouries back in Florida to crowds of 100-250 - TJP & Cedric Alexander vs Riddick Moss & Tino Sabbatelli 27th in Citrus Springs, TJ vs Andrade Almas was doubtless very good next night in Jacksonville, 29th in Crystal River the long-running Alexander Wolfe & Sawyer Fulton vs Heavy Machinery goes on last.

THE CARDS

Bobby Roode vs Tye Dillinger goes 1-1 on those two mid month cards but Roode beats him in Fresno, Dillinger beats Wesley Blake in Richmond and Sacramento and Buddy Murphy in Largo and twice more in California. TM61 vs Authors Of Pain and Alexander Wolfe & Sawyer Fulton vs Heavy Machinery run often throughout the month and Angelo Dawkins & Kenneth Crawford (Montez) lose to AoP in Largo and Jacksonville. In Norfolk and Belair, there's Asuka vs Peyton Royce for the belt (which comes back round in Fresno), Roode vs Cedric Alexander, Liv Morgan vs Aliyah and No Way Jose vs Elias Samson. Morgan vs Nikki Cross bookends the month somewhat in Largo and Citrus Springs. Both nights mid month and in Tampa Liv & Aliyah team to swap wins with Peyton & Billie Kay. Asuka also defends against Daria in Winter Haven, Tampa and San Jose and twice against Daria's bestie Mandy Rose during the West Coast loop. Also in California it’s Murphy vs Blake (… at last?), Aliyah tags with Daria to beat the Iiconics and Oney Lorcan vs Patrick Clark repeats. Liv vs Macey Estrella (Lacey Evans) ends the month in Jacksonville and Crystal River, both Citrus Springs and Jacksonville see Lince Dorado vs Dawkins.

VARIATIONS

Largo has Ember vs Aliyah, in Richmond Austin Aries loses to Alexander, Asuka retains against Aliyah and it's Liv vs Peyton. Fort Pierce it's Ember vs Mandy, in Winter Haven Cedric beats Andrade Almas again and Johnny Gargano & Tomasso Ciampa beat the Street Profits (as will be). Lakeland sees Aries lose to Dillinger again and that battle royal includes Macey in her first NXT match in front of fans on record. Tampa has Aries lose to Lorcan - I strongly believe that given Aries' reputation as stubborn and sometimes hard to deal with, they keep asking him to lose on the road to check if he's "business" - we'll definitely touch on that again when we get to his departure. Ocala has Peyton vs Daria, Moon vs Cross and Blake vs Elias. In Fresno, Daria & Ember beat Aliyah & Mandy, in Sacramento there's a reprisal of Roode vs Jose plus we have - here's a name for you - Roderick Strong vs Lorcan. In San Jose AoP advance over Jose & Rich Swann and Miller beats Strong in a singles to get TM61 into the semi plus Ember pins Billie. In Bakersfield there's Samoa Joe vs Jose and Strong vs Lorcan vs Clark, in LA Strong vs Jose (75% wins for Roddy so far), Asuka & Ember beat the Iiconics, it's Daria vs Mandy (sob) and TM61 beat Wolfe & Fulton and AoP beat DIY to make the Dusty final and Roode pins Kota Ibushi - fuck, they threw everything at that one! A neat little round robin month end sees Danielle Kamela lose to Bianca Belair in Citrus Springs then to Cross in Jacksonville, before Nikki pins Bianca in Crystal River. Also in Jacksonville Dawkins does double duty, with the Profits losing to Tucker & Otis on first before losing to Dorado later, finally Alexander beats Elias.

TVs

3rd Raw at the Staples Center (11,000+) it's another bad day to hold a title... I can't believe I'm typing this but new and first Cruiserweight champ of the new era TJP loses his first non title match ALREADY, to Brian Kendrick (FUCK SAKE) and on last, Sasha satisfyingly beats Charlotte to win the Womens title for the second time.. on TV, rather than PPV/PLE, for the second time. Next night in San Diego after the go-home SmackDown Orton pins Wyatt. No Mercy on 9th is another rousing success for the blue brand in ring - the Styles vs Cena vs Ambrose main event actually goes on first because WWE wants their fans to still see it, clashing as most of the show will with Giants vs Packers on one channel and a presidential debate on the other. Typical Vince to assume Trump is a needle mover - Mania 23 was all him, you know. Also, Ziggler "risks his career" against Miz and predictably comes out with the ICT. Next nights Raw in Oakland I have to mention for novelty - Reigns & Sasha beat Rusev & Charlotte in a mixed tag. San Jose SmackDown is truly remarkable - Ziggler wins a handicap against old mates Spirit Squad Kenny & Mikey, and special ref Ambrose costs Styles a match to James Ellsworth. Dark, what a fucking treat this would be on Coliseum - Ziggler, Cena and John's mrs Nikki beat Corbin, Miz and Mella. 13th at Full Sail, Lorcan vs Blake is an unused match and for TV, Aries & Strong (Gen Next!!!) lose to Heavy Machinery in the Dusty tourney, Kamela beats Cross by DQ, Aliyah upsets Billie (for those of you that don't remember her ever winning a TV match), Thea Trinidad (Rosita from TNA/Zelina Vega) jobs for Asuka, Ember beats Rachel Evers (latest name for Rachael Ellering), Progress' Nathan Cruz gets a cheque for jobbing to Elias, DIY finally beat The Revival to reach the semis and... having beaten Dorado & Mustafa Ali to reach the quarters, Ibushi & TJP bow out to Wolfe & Fulton... that doesn't sit well with me, to be honest. 17th in Denver for whatever reason Raw itself is underwhelming but they get the Reigns vs Rusev and Owens v Rollins one-two from the road as dark matches. Next night in the same building James Ellsworth actually beats Styles by DQ in a title match and far more importantly, Miz, Mikey and Kenny beat Ziggler and the tag champs. 24th in Minneapolis there's again Reigns vs Rusev after cameras, next night in suburban Green Bay Kenny & Mikey come up short in their crack at Slater & Rhino for the belts (awww). 30th its Hell In A Cell, continuing to saturate the market. It features a myriad of notable events - Reigns vs Rusev is a cracking Cell match, Kendrick relieves TJP of the Cruiser title, New Day vs The Bar has a shitty DQ finish, and a fairly late change to the plan has Sasha vs Charlotte in Hell In A Cell go down as the first womens Cell match AND first womens match to go on last on a PPV, and in her hometown of Boston, The Boss.... loses the belt to Flair on a PPV for the second time, clean for the rules of a Cell match. Banks was pencilled in to retain but Vince changed it because he believed Sasha to be injury prone and not trusted for a long reign. Unfortunately the knock on effect of that (as well as extending Charlotte's accidental record of not losing in singles on PPV) is to make Sasha, the babyface, look like a total loser. Still, as long as she wins the feud in the end, right? Right??? Finally next night in Hartford after Raw, Rollins beats Kev by DQ for the hundredth time.

NON TITLE WHINING

Beaten on TV this month : TJP (Cruiserweight champ) by Kendrick, Styles (WWE CHAMPION) by Ellsworth, New Day (Raw tag team champions) by The Bar, Owens (UNIVERSAL CHAMPION) in a three way with Y2J and (winner) Rollins

DEPARTURES

Does this count? Despite a protracted courtship that loss to Bobby Roode in LA is the last booking for Kota Ibushi. You didn’t think he’d signed, did you? Scared of commitment, that one. A free spirit if ever there was.

Here's that dark mixed six-person ;

Surprising that the Universal Champion is losing matches so soon after the creation of the belt, and the unfortunate vacating of the first champion. You’d have thought if any title would be kept strong it’d be that one.

Probably because they weren't looking at the title but Kev as champion, which was a panic decision and placeholder reign all at once. They were always going to return to Reigns eventually but wanted time (LOL) to heat him back up after the suspension curtailed the first reign, Balor was supposed to fill that gap for the mid-term but he got crocked, so they turned to Kev because they still wanted to hold off on Reigns, and they figured that it shouldn't be Rollins as he'd had one good run already (according to Owens, anyway). It kind of makes sense that if you're not going with Reigns, you get a new heel in on top because Seth is a strong challenger for a couple of months, and it was a good excuse to turn Rollins face ahead of the delayed HHH match - originally intended for WrestleMania (Star), that eventually will happen at WrestleMania (Sun). But there were never great plans to push Owens.

What doesn't make sense is deciding straight after SummerSlam 2016 that you don't want to put that belt on Roman quite yet, and holding off until SummerSlam 2018.

NOVEMBER 2016

MAIN EVENTS - SMACKDOWN
We’re selling our souls again 3rd-4th in Riad, it’s AJ Styles vs Dean Ambrose both nights, second of which is 2/3 falls. Still the same on the Europe tour 5th-7th in Manchester (13,000), Newcastle and Aberdeen, then 9th-13th at the NEC (9000), Cardiff, Barcelona (11,000), Madrid (11,000) and Bilbao. The same match continues 21st in Kingston (Ontario) and 26th-28th in Kansas City, Fayetteville and Florence. Why the hell I didn't go to the MEN on the Saturday to see AJ defend the WWE title is beyond me... there's worse to come in that regard. Much worse.

THE CARDS
Dolph Ziggler vs The Miz for the ICT runs every night of the month. It's Kane & American Alpha vs Randy Orton, Bray Wyatt & Luke Harper on night 2 of Riad and throughout the Euro trip. Tag title is still Heath Slater & Rhino vs The Usos vs Tyler Breeze & Fandango in Britain (and Kingston) and Womens title is Becky Lynch vs Alexa Bliss every night, Nikki Bella & Naomi vs Natalya & Carmella lasts the whole tour and both matches repeat in Kingston. There's Hype Bros vs The Ascension night 1 and in Europe before TVs, and Kalisto vs Baron Corbin (repeats in Kingston) and Jack Swagger vs Curt Hawkins night 2 and up to TVs. It's Swagger vs Corbin night 1 and after TVs in Europe where Hawkins loses to Apollo Crews and all the tag teams end up together - Slater & Rhino/Hype Bros/Breezango vs Usos/Ascension/The Vaudevillains. Month end back home its back to Kane vs Wyatt as a streetfight and it becomes Crews/Bros/Alpha vs Hawkins/Vaudevillains/Ascension, the tag title is a straight Rhino & Slater vs Breezango, the womens title becomes a 6way, and Corbins two feuds combine - he beats Swagger then talks himself into a second match but now Kalisto's beating him, avenging the rest of the month.

VARIATIONS
Unique to Riad are Orton vs Kane street fight, Rhino/Slater vs Usos vs Breezango vs Alpha and Kalisto vs Hawkins on night 1, Rhino/Slater vs Usos vs Ascension and Hype Bros vs Breezango on night 2. Naomi misses Kansas City so the womens title match is "only" a five way.

MAIN EVENTS - RAW
2nd-6th in Frankfurt, Munich, London (9000), Minehead and Leeds and 8th-12th in Oberhausen, Berlin, Vienna, Lyon and Strasbourg it’s Kevin Owens vs Seth Rollins in streetfights for the big belt then weirdly 26th/27th in Providence and North Charleston it’s Roman Reigns vs Owens on last for Reigns’ US title meaning he’s permitted to pin the Universal Champ without taking his belt. Boo.

THE CARDS
Roman Reigns vs Rusev
is quite the supporting act for the US belt. There’s Sami Zayn vs Chris Jericho from London onwards. Tag title is still New Day vs Karl Anderson & Luke Gallows vs The Bar vs Enzo Amore & Big Cass. Usually women’s title is Charlotte vs Sasha Banks while a tag has Bayley & Alicia Fox vs Nia Jax & Dana Brooke, refereed by Emma conflated to a six woman in Minehead, Leeds and Strasbourg and again when they get home. The rest of the early month cards are made up of Adrian Neville vs Bo Dallas, Sin Cara vs Curtis Axel and Darren Young, Goldust & R-Truth vs Titus O’Neil & The Shining Stars. After TVs we add Braun Strowman vs Big Show as bodyslam challenges only, Gallows & Anderson drop out of the tag title match and the undercard has an 8-man of Neville/Young/Golden Truth vs Dallas/Titus/Shining Stars. Reigns doesn’t go to Austria or France so the tag title is just New Day vs The Bar, Enzo has nights off and Rusev does jobs to Cass. Back home the tag title match and most of the undercard is back to what it was early tour.

VARIATIONS
In Frankfurt without Y2J, spare man Zayn pins Axel before the open challenge schtick gets Perfects kid beaten by Sin Cara as usual. In Munich Zayn pins Sin Cara, Neville & Young beat Axel & Titus, Golden Truth swap into the tag title four way and The Bar swap out, to tag with former Werder Bremen (and Germany - 6 caps) goalkeeper Tim Wiese to beat Dallas and the Stars in Tim’s only official wrestling match. Just think, we could have had Wiese vs Hugo Knox over who had been the better keeper! Displaced of their previous opponents in Providence, Seth Rollins pins Rusev. In North Charleston Rusev loses to Zayn and Rollins goes over Y2J.

MAIN EVENTS - NXT
3rd in Fort Pierce Andrade Almas vs Tye Dillinger is a low key start, next night in Venice Shinsuke Nakamura tags with Dillinger and Buddy Murphy against Sanity lads Eric Young, Alexander Wolfe & Sawyer Fulton, then 5th in Gainesville Shinsuke’s partners are Patrick Clark and Cedric Alexander. 11th in St Augustine Nakamura teams with Heavy Machinery to beat Bobby Roode and Authors Of Pain, next night in Cocoa a mixed 8-person sees Daria (Berenato) on the face team against Roode, Riddick Moss, Tino Sabbatelli and Mandy Rose. 16th is special, 3000 squeeze into the theatre at MSG for Nakamura, Johnny Gargano & Tommaso Ciampa vs Samoa Joe & The Revival, repeating next night in Boston.

B shows! 17th in Orlando is a four match card for the WrestleMania on sale party is topped by TJP vs Andrade Almas while the biggest names are in the North East, 18th in Tampa Almas is with Gran Metalik on last. I bet both were belters.

THE CARDS - LOL
The only repeat in week 1 is Mandy Rose vs Aliyah (1-1). Macey Estrella vs Sarah Bridges (Logan) repeats on both B shows in Florida (1-1). Umm.... nobody actually wrestles each other twice in any other combination for the rest of the month. Fuck.

VARIATIONS - A FEW NEW FACES IN HERE
Asuka teams with Liv Morgan to beat Billie Kay & Peyton Royce in Gainesville, it's Asuka/Morgan/Ember Moon/Aliyah vs Mandy, Daria, Billie & Macey in St Augustine, Asuka vs Ember vs Nikki Cross for the belt in New York and Asuka vs Ember vs Peyton in Boston. Heavy Machinery lose to Alexander Wolfe & Sawyer Fulton in Fort Pierce and Authors Of Pain in Venice but beat Angelo Dawkins & Kenneth Crawford in Gainesville and Tino Sabbatelli & Riddick Moss in Orlando. Otherwise.... in Fort Pierce it's Liv vs Peyton, Roderick Strong vs Wesley Blake and Daria vs Mandy (so wrong). Venice has Liv & Ember vs Peyton & Danielle Kamela and Andrade Almas vs Oney Lorcan. In Gainesville Strong beats Steve Cutler, in St Augustine they get Tommy End vs Lince Dorado, Cross vs Bianca Belair, Strong vs Elias Samson and Damian O'Connor vs Rich Swann. Cocoa - Strong vs Buddy Murphy, Almas vs No Way Jose and Morgan & Aliyah vs Billie & Bianca. MSG has Bobby Roode vs Cedric Alexander, Tye Dillinger vs Eric Young, Daria & Liv vs The Iiconics, TM61 vs Wolfe & Fulton and Jose upsets Strong. Boston has Jose & TM61 vs the three Sanity guys, Roode vs Dillinger, Strong vs Cedric and Cross vs Morgan, in Tampa Tommy pins Murphy.

TVs

1st SmackDown in Newark, Crews vs Viktor is a dark match between shows, Spirit Squad Kenny & Mikey do a job for American Alpha and The Headbangers put over the Usos. Glasgow TVs are notable for 11,000 attending Raw and touching distance to that for SmackDown. There's 11,000 in Buffalo too for Raw on 14th. Next night in Wilkes-Barre Miz regains the ICT from Ziggler on live SmackDown plus a mental tag has Hype Bros, Alpha, Breezango and the Usos beat the Vaudevillains, Ascension, Spirit Squad and Headbangers. James Ellsworth vs Ricky Martinez is a dark opener and the main event is Kane, Ambrose and Alpha vs Styles, Orton, Wyatt and Harper. TakeOver Toronto is another blinder - Ciampa & Gargano relieve Revival of the tag belts in a stunning 2/3 falls match, Asuka beats one night returner (for now) Mickie James and Joe gets the big belt back from Shinsuke. Next night at Survivor Series you'd be forgiven for forgetting most of the results or even Shane McMahon nearly killing himself in (successful) pursuit of a victory for Team SmackDown, because all we really remember is Bill Goldberg vs Brock Lesnar which is the most fun sub 90 second match you've seen in forever. I was absolutely gobsmacked (in a good way) watching this live as I fully expected the point of the match to be Lesnar getting his win back. It was fantastic watching him show arse and get put square in the ground by Bill, and made great business sense both at the time and with the benefit of hindsight. Top marks. Next night on Raw at the Air Canada (13,500) I just want to mention - future WWE champ Jinder Mahal is still at the level of jobbing to Sin Cara for Superstars. Next night in Ottawa Ambrose and Kane beat Wyatt & Harper dark. 28th Raw in Charlotte, after an earlier non finish Sasha beats Charlotte in a wild falls count anywhere in powerful fashion to win the belt from her on Raw as opposed to on PPV for the third consecutive time.. watch this space. Dark, despite having beaten him on the show proper anyway, Reigns beats Kev non title in a dark main. Next night in Columbia they settle into the pattern of live SmackDown, then a 205 Live taping, then a dark main - Hype Bros beat Breezango before any tapings, Swann beats Brian Kendrick for the Cruiserweight title on 205, then the main has Ambrose & Dolph beat rivals Styles & Miz. Finally 30th at Full Sail unused matches have Blake job to Tian Bing, Bridges lose to Peyton and Nakamura beat Clark, and they tape Roode becoming #1 contender and DIY turn back Revival in the rematch.

NON TITLE WHINING

Beaten on TV this month : Styles (WWE CHAMPION) by Ambrose, AND again by Ellsworth in a ladder match because of Ambrose, Reigns (US champ) in a five way vs Y2J, Rollins, Strowman and (winner) Owens, Owens (UNIVERSAL CHAMPION) by Reigns.

DEPARTURES
A couple of matches on TV are the last time The Headbangers and Kenny Dykstra & Mikey Mondo get work. It was fun.

Here's Zayn vs Y2J from Strasbourg ;

DECEMBER 2016

MAIN EVENTS - SMACKDOWN
Still AJ Styles vs Dean Ambrose 3rd in Oklahoma City, 5th in Tyler AJ has a knock so it’s The Miz vs Dolph Ziggler vs Ambrose for the ICT, then 10th-12th Deano is back with Bray Wyatt in streetfights in Norfolk, Greenville and Roanoke and again 17th-19th in Peterborough, Barrie and Hamilton. The champ is back after Christmas for big three ways with John Cena and Ambrose for the traditional Boxing Day trip to MSG and 28th-30th in Nashville, Atlanta and Miami.

THE CARDS
Week 1, Kane & American Alpha vs Bray Wyatt, Randy Orton & Luke Harper continues and Heath Slater & Rhino vs Tyler Breeze & Fandango doesnt sound like a tag title match, but it is, and its still Baron Corbin vs Kalisto which happens literally every night of the month. Into week 2, Dolph Ziggler vs Harper is back on, after a title change the Womens title is now up in a four way of Alexa Bliss vs Becky Lynch vs Carmella vs Natalya, our previous 8-man becomes Alpha & Hype Bros vs The Ascension & The Vaudevillains, plus after Apollo Crews vs Curt Hawkins, Hawkins talks himself into a second match and loses to Jack Swagger too. Rhino/Slater vs Breezango unchanged except the belts are no longer involved. Three identical cards in Ontario have Lynch get a rest and Nikki Bella step into the four-way, Alpha vs Breezango, Rhino & Slater vs Ascension vs Vaudevillains, Crews pinning The Miz and Harper pinning Mojo. After Christmas Ziggler vs Miz goes into a cage (!) after their one standard match in Oklahoma City, Bliss vs Lynch is back on (after one instance in Tyler), Bray/Orton/Harper are rolling over Swagger/Mojo/Ryder, Alpha win a gauntlet/"tag team turmoil" over the Ascension, Vaudevillains, Breezango and The Usos, and we add Bella vs Natalya and James Ellsworth is on the road, pinning Hawkins.

VARIATIONS
In Oklahoma only there's Lynch vs Bliss vs Carmella vs Natalya vs Bella and Swagger/Crews/Hype Bros vs Hawkins/Viktor/Vaudevillains, in Tyler Bella vs Carmella vs Nattie separates from the title match, Kalisto beats Hawkins after he loses to Corbin and it's Swagger/Crews/Bros vs Vaudevillains/Ascension.

MAIN EVENTS - RAW
Still Roman Reigns vs Kevin Owens for the US title (umm) 2nd-4th in Albuquerque, Mexico City and Monterrey, 10th/11th in Lowell and White Plains, 16th/17th in Rochester and Youngstown and 27th-30th in St Louis, at the Barclays, in Boston and at the Staples Center.

THE CARDS
Seth Rollins vs Chris Jericho rumbles on week 1 and Big Show vs Rusev repeats in Albuquerque and Monterrey. It’s Sasha Banks vs Charlotte for the belt in Albuquerque and Mexico City, and New Day vs The Bar vs Enzo Amore & Big Cass vs Karl Anderson & Luke Gallows for all three nights. Sami Zayn, Adrian Neville, Sin Cara, Goldust & R-Truth vs Titus O’Neil, Bo Dallas, Curtis Axel & The Shining Stars repeats in Albuquerque and Mexico City. New matches in the North East see Rollins beat Rusev, Zayn lose to Braun Strowman, Neville beat Jinder Mahal, Sasha & Bayley beat Nia Jax & Dana Brooke, Sin Cara tag with Darren Young against the Stars and tag title match unchanged. Tag title, Rollins vs Rusev, Zayn vs Braun and Neville vs Jinder continue mid month, there are changes too (see below). After Christmas Rollins is back with Jericho (streetfight in Brooklyn) and Rusev jobs to Cass, the tag title is now a three way as a result except in LA where it reverts to the previous weeks matches. Another switcharoo on the undercard has Sin Cara, Young, Goldust and Truth now tag with former enemy Axel against Dallas, Jinder, Titus and the Stars, and ladies wise Charlotte/Nia/Dana are now losing to Sasha, Bayley and Liv Morgan. Post St Louis Rich Swann defends the Cruiserweight title against Neville, Zayn vs Braun rolls on.

VARIATIONS
Here's the big one - Brock Lesnar vs Rusev in Mexico City. It's Bayley & Alicia Fox vs Nia & Dana ref’d by Emma in Albuquerque, Baylicia vs Emma & Dana in Mexico City, and Sasha/Bayley/Fox vs Charlotte/Dana/Emma in Monterrey, where there's a split on the undercard into Neville vs Dallas and the rest in an 8-man. Unique to Rochester after losing to Neville Jinder talks himself into another match and is flattened by Show, its Young/Sin Cara/Golden Truth vs Titus/Axel/Stars and Bayley/Alicia vs Charlotte & Nia ; next night in Youngstown it’s Sasha/Bayley/Fox vs Charlotte/Dana/Nia, and Sin Cara/Goldie/Truth vs Axel/Primo/Epico.

MAIN EVENTS - NXT
We have a gigantic tour starting the month - 3rd in Osaka (4500+) doesnt really count as a house show because all but one match are televised later. Title change in the can, 5th in Perth its Shinsuke Nakamura & TM61 vs Samoa Joe & The Revival, 7th in Canberra Nakamura & Tye Dillinger beat Joe & Bobby Roode, 8th in Melbourne (5000) Nakamura vs Joe goes into the cage! 10th in Newcastle (still Oz) and 13th in Sydney (4000) it's Shinsuke, Dillinger and Buddy Murphy beating Joe, Roode and Elias Samson either side of 11th in Gold Coast where its Shinsuke/Dillinger/TM61 vs Joe/Roode/Revival. 15th in Riverside Nakamura & Dillinger face Roode & Andrade Almas, next night in Vegas (4000) it's the first Nakamura vs Roode title match.

B shows go on while the top guys are overseas and they're rather heavy on Sanity. 2nd in Crystal River, Alexander Wolfe & Damien O'Connor put over TJP & Cedric Alexander. Next night in Largo, Heavy Machinery vs Authors Of Pain goes on last. 8th in St Petersburg Machinery and Ho Ho Lun lose to all three of the new Sanity - Wolfe, Damo and Eric Young. 9th in Winter Haven Young & Damo beat Heavy M, next night in Venice Young is on last losing to Roderick Strong. 15th in Jacksonville Strong & TJP beat Young & Wolfe, 16th in Citrus Springs Young & Wolfe beat Angelo Dawkins & Montez Ford, next night in Tampa Wolfe & Damo beat Otis & Tucker.

THE CARDS
Johnny Gargano & Tommaso Ciampa vs The Revival happens a few times in Australia and back home, as does DIY defending against Riddick Moss & Tino Sabbatelli - the latter duo also job a couple of times to TM61 in front of home crowds. Asuka vs Peyton Royce then Asuka vs Ember Moon repeat on tour (Ember carries on challenging Stateside) as do Bobby Roode vs Tye Dillinger and Andrade Almas vs Akira Tozawa which I bet was fucking special. Moon vs Aliyah gives way to a couple of instances of Aliyah and Liv Morgan losing to Peyton and Billie Kay, plus Patrick Clark vs Wesley Blake or vs Oney Lorcan both repeat. Lorcan vs Elias Samson repeats in Canberra then Riverside, Liv vs Aliyah repeats mid month. On B shows Heavy Machinery vs Authors Of Pain repeats. Jack Gallagher vs Noam Dar makes perfect sense as they know each other well, Kona Reeves vs Gran Metalik repeats, "Gentleman" Jack also beats Steve Cutler a few times and Dar works Metalik too. Daria Berenato vs Mandy Rose (noooo!) and Lana vs Sarah Bridges both repeat as do Nikki Cross vs Daria and Mandy vs Macey Estrella, and Angelo Dawkins & Kenneth Crawford (not renamed yet) swap wins with the Bollywood Boys.

VARIATIONS - SELECTED
Perth has Murphy vs Blake, Andrade vs Lorcan and Ember vs Billie. In Canberra, TM61 vs Revival (popular win there), Murphy vs Tozawa and Asuka & Liv vs the Iiconics. It's Ember vs Billie vs Liv, Andrade vs Blake and Murphy & Dillinger vs Roode & Elias in Melbourne. On the Gold Coast, Murphy vs Elias, in Sydney, Lorcan vs Blake. In Crystal River we get Rich Swann vs Reeves and Tommy End vs Lince Dorado plus Daria & Bianca Belair vs Mandy & Macey. Largo get Metalik vs Dorado and TJP vs Tommy which both sound great. In St Petersburg Roderick Strong vs Tommy sounds hard-hitting. Winter Haven get a TJP vs Metalik rematch, Damo & Wolfe vs Machinery is unique to Venice, in Jacksonville its Rose vs Bridges and Berenato vs Estrella, in Citrus Springs Roderick vs TJP and in Tampa AoP vs Profits and Cross vs Macey. Finally in Vegas, Dillinger beats Elias AND Blake back to back and Almas jobs to No Way Jose.

TVs
The aforementioned Osaka on the 3rd features an unused three way between (winner) Dillinger, Roode and Elias on top of a wealth of TV matches including Nakamura relieving Joe of the belt on his own turf, DIY retaining over Tozawa & Yoshihiro Tajiri (!) and an Asuka/Nia rematch. 4th at TLC loads happens - Orton & Wyatt take the tag belts off Slater & Rhino, Alexa wins the Women’s title from Lynch in a tables match and AJ retains over Ambrose in a ladder match when Ellsworth turns on Ambrose. 11th Raw in Philadelphia (11,700) is notable because New Day turn back two big name challenger teams of Owens & Y2J and - back together - Reigns & Rollins, which is an encouraging sign of mixing the tag champs into the story between the four big singles stars. Next night in Washington Neville pins Axel dark before SmackDown AND the Tribute to The Troops taping. 18th at Roadblock is a maddening PPV which for me just confirmed SmackDown was far better written. Yes, I watched this one. The Bar bring an end to the insane reign of the New Day (no problem), Zayn technically wins his match with Strowman by lasting the 10 minute time limit (never a fan of that), the first Owens vs Reigns PPV title match ends on a DQ because of course it does, and worst of all…. Sasha vs Charlotte in an Iron Woman match is the worst booked match I’ve ever watched. Having been booked as a loser and choke artist on PPV twice before (including in her hometown), babyface Sasha is winning 3-2 and with only 2 seconds to endure to retain the belt, submits to the Figure 8 to force overtime. Which is fine if she wins in the end, perhaps, except in overtime Sasha submits again, tapping away her belt nice and clean. Having reaffirmed she’s vastly out of her depth against “the Queen” on PPV, they emphatically underline she’s a quitter too. I can think of no other explanation than that’s the story they wanted to tell. I periodically mention Reigns getting “Lugered” but THIS is the worst treatment of an apparent babyface since 1993/4. Who’s ever going to believe in Sasha again after this? Maybe somewhere along the way they decided the best use of The Boss at this point wasn’t to be the hero of her own story but as collateral damage in building the “unbeatable” aura of Charlotte as a baddie on PPV… but even that’s going to fizzle out with a whimper very shortly and she jobs to Bayley the next night on Raw anyway. Awful all round. 20th SmackDown in Detroit (9500) Rhino & Slater beat The Vaudevillains before the show, Becky wears the "La Luchadora" mask for the first time to pin Bliss, and Deano & Alpha beat Bray/Orton/Harper between shows. 26th at the AllState (11,000) Scarlett Bordeaux (yes, that one) jobs for Nia and Reigns defends his belt against Kev, and pins him yet again, and next night in the same building (11,300) all three titles are contested and Alpha finally win the tag belts in a four way.

NON TITLE WHINING
Beaten on TV this month : Miz, obviously (Intercontinental champion) in a four way with Ambrose, Harper and (winner) Ziggler, AGAIN the very same taping by Apollo, Charlotte (Raw Womens Champion) by Bayley, Alexa (SmackDown Womens Champion) by "La Luchadora" (Lynch), Owens (UNIVERSAL CHAMPION) by Reigns

DEPARTURES
The tradition continues of nobody getting released before Christmas.

JANUARY 2017
This is a fucking whacky month. Both the top champs are actively challenging rivals for their secondary titles. It's weird but in a way, I love it. Alternatively there are yet more non title main events where the champ does pinfall jobs just so the goodie is winning. Which I like less.

THE MAIN EVENTS - SMACKDOWN
It's AJ Styles vs John Cena vs Baron Corbin (huh?) for the WWE title 7th-9th in Bossier City, Lafayette and Lake Charles and 14th-16th in Birmingham, Jackson MS (too hot, hot damn) and Jonesboro, then 21st-23rd in Fairborn, Fort Wayne and Saginaw it's actually Dean Ambrose vs AJ for the Intercontinental title - which means AJ is losing to the man he took the big belt from. We return to the three way for the big belt 28th in San Angelo the night before the Rumble and again 30th in Hidalgo - by which Cena is now taking the belt in and thus, winning.

THE CARDS
Randy Orton, Bray Wyatt & Luke Harper somehow lose to Apollo Crews & American Alpha early month, then rebound to beat Crews, Jack Swagger & Mojo Rawley... Randy is slumming it here, REALLY. By week 3, Alpha are defending in a four-way against The Usos, Bray & Harper and The Ascension, in the week prior it was Tag Team Turmoil vs the Usos, Ascension, The Vaudevillains, Heath Slater & Rhino and Tyler Breeze & Fandango. Dean Ambrose vs Dolph Ziggler starts the month as the ICT match then Deano defends against The Miz while Ziggler works Kalisto. While Ambrose is on top Miz beats Apollo Crews, when Ambrose returns to Miz, Ziggler beats Crews. Baron Corbin also works Kalisto during his time out of the main event. Alexa Bliss vs Becky Lynch for the Womens belt goes every night alongside Nikki Bella vs Natalya or a tag of Bella & Naomi vs Nattie & Carmella forming a sandwich month - Mid West its twice Becky & Naomi vs Bliss & Mella. Kalisto works Curt Hawkins when he isn't with someone else, or even after some of his defeats to Corbin as Hawkins tries to rid himself of his losing streak. Some other nights Hawkins begs for another match and is promptly beaten by James Ellsworth. Early month there's a ludicrous 12-man with Slater, Rhino, The Usos, Swagger and Mojo vs Breeze, Fandango, Vaudevillains and Ascension. When the tag title is the four-way, it leaves us with Slater & Rhino vs Breezango and Mojo & Swagger vs Vaudevillains.

VARIATIONS
In Hidalgo Alpha start defending against Orton & Wyatt, in San Angelo they did Turmoil with all the previous teams except the Ascension who are off, plus Wyatt & Harper. In Hildalgo this leaves an 8-man of Slater, Rhino and the Usos vs Breeze, Dango and the Ascension - Harper gets a night off. In Fairborn the Usos are off so that 4-way becomes a 3-way. In Saginaw only Becky, Naomi & Bella beat Alexa, Carmella and Nat.

THE MAIN EVENTS - RAW
6th-8th its Roman Reigns vs Kevin Owens, and US Champ Reigns is defending HIS belt, thus winning in Columbus GA, Montgomery and Mobile. 14th/15th in Wichita and Tulsa, new US Champ Chris Jericho vs Seth Rollins goes to a DQ leading to the old "impromptu" tag main where Rollins n Reigns knock off JeriKO. Same deal 21st in Indiana PA, 20th in Binghamton and 22nd in Canton it's Reigns vs Owens in non title streetfights and again 27th in Hobbs NM and 28th in Abilene - all, of course, are won by Reigns.

THE CARDS
Seth Rollins vs Chris Jericho is obviously a highlight including in Mobile where it's undercard without the US title (which Y2J hasn't won yet) and has a finish. Rollins beats Rusev on nights Jericho isn't around - which leaves Rusev with Big Cass. It's usually a three-way of The Bar vs New Day vs Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson for the tag belts - on three nights Cass & Enzo Amore are in there too, month end it's a three way of the other three teams and The Bar get a break. Sasha Banks, Bayley & Alicia Fox vs Charlotte, Nia Jax & Dana Brooke is every night. Big Show vs Bo Dallas early month and Braun Strowman vs Sami Zayn for the first two weeks go exactly as you'd expect. Rich Swann vs Adrian Neville vs TJP is the CWT match all but 14th and 15th. There's a rotating multi-man in the undercard which mid month is Show, Goldust, R-Truth, Sin Cara and Darren Young beating The Shining Stars, Jinder Mahal, Dallas and Titus O'Neil, third week Young, Dallas and Jinder get nights off and Curtis Axel joins the heel team, month end its just Show/Truth/Goldust vs Titus/Primo/Epico plus Sin Cara vs Axel appears in singles.

VARIATIONS
Weirdly rivals Rollins and Jericho work one DQ each with Strowman in Hobbs and Abilene respectively. In Wichita its Swann vs The Brian Kendrick vs TJP. Early month the rotating multi man has Axel on the babyface team in place of Show in Columbus, Cass in the same spot in Montgomery, in Mobile Truth Goldie and Show beat the five heels by themselves.

MAIN EVENTS - NXT
6th in Largo it's Shinsuke Nakamura, Johnny Gargano & Tomasso Ciampa vs Eric Young, Killian Dain & Alexander Wolfe. 7th in Ocala is a bit weaker, Roderick Strong & Tye Dillinger vs The Revival goes on last, then we split the rosters - 12-14th its Nakamura & Roddy vs Samoa Joe & Bobby Roode in Indianapolis, Louisville and Nashville, while its Revival vs Riddick Moss & Tino Sabbatelli in Tampa then they get two nights with the Street Profits in Lakeland and Cocoa. 19th in Orlando, its Nakamura & DIY vs Wesley Blake & Authors Of Pain, 20th in Jacksonville Nakamura & Heavy Machinery beat Elias Samson & Revival, 21st in Fort Pierce it's Dillinger with DIY vs Blake & AOP, 26th in Houston its Nakamura & Dillinger vs Joe & Roode, 27th in Dallas Nakamura & DIY beat Roode & AOP.

THE CARDS
Johnny Gargano & Tomasso Ciampa vs Authors Of Pain for the tag belts repeats in Indiannapolis and Nashville. Asuka vs Peyton Royce for the belt repeats in Louisville and Dallas. It's Aleister Black vs Patrick Clark in Orlando and Fort Pierce, Roderick Strong beats Elias Samson in Orlando and Dallas, Dream's with Elias in Indianapolis and Nashville, and Elias beats Oney Lorcan in Louisville and Fort Pierce. In Indiannapolis and Louisville Gran Metalik pins Noam Dar, Lorcan & Heavy Machinery swap wins with all three of Sanity in Ocala and Indiannapolis. Ember Moon vs Mandy Rose goes three nights in Indiannapolis, Louisville and Nashville, Ember also pins Aliyah in both Jacksonville and Dallas, in both Cocoa and Fort Pierce Daria Berenato beats Macey Estrella. Other repeats have Babtunde (Commander Azeez) beating Chris Atkins, Tony Nese beats Mustafa Ali, as does Jack Gallagher beat Buddy Murphy, and Wesley Blake beats Dan Matha (Dorian Mak), Steve Cutler beats both Adrian Jaoude (aka Tiger Ruas) and Cezar Bonini twice each.

VARIATIONS - SELECTED
Samoa Joe beats No Way Jose in Dallas. DIY retain against Wolfe & Dain in Louisville and the Revival in Houston. Revival beat Heavy Machinery in Dallas, there's a four-way in Fort Pierce where Revival beat Machinery, Wolfe & Dain and the Street Profits. Roderick beats Dream in Jacksonville and Blake in Houston. Kassius Ohno beats Andrade Almas in Largo and Angelo Dawkins in Ocala. Akira Tozawa loses to Tian Bing (!) in Largo, beats Nese in Tampa, Murphy in Lakeland, Kona Reeves in Cocoa and loses to Andrade in Houston. Aleister beats Elias in Ocala and Blake in Jacksonville, Asuka retains over Nikki Cross and Billie Kay in Indiannapolis, Cross and Royce in Nashville (completing quite a hat trick in three nights), it's a four way in Houston and in other fun, Asuka & Aliyah beat the Iiconics in Ocala. Dillinger beats EY in Dallas but Young beats Dream in Louisville, Elias otherwise loses to Jose in Houston, and Dream loses to Montez Ford in Largo. AOP beat Heavy Machinery in Louisville, Young & Wolfe beat Otis & Tucker in Nashville, in a six-man Cedric Alexander & Machinery lose to all three of Sanity in Houston. Billie beats Macey in Largo, in Tampa Lana beats Macey and Daria beats Liv Morgan, in Lakeland Daria beats Dori Prange (Heidi Lovelace/Ruby Riott/Soho), Lana beats Kimberley Frankele in Orlando, in Fort Pierce Mandy pins Dori, Mandy & Daria beat Liv & Aliyah in Largo, in Lakeland Liv & 'liyah beat Macey & Sarah Bridges, in Cocoa they beat Dori and Kimber, the Iiconics beat Liv & Aliyah in Orlando. In Jacksonville there's a ladies battle royal where Ember & Aliyah outlast Billie & Daria, Dori & Liv (future Riott Squad!), Macey & Mandy, Peyton & Nikki, Victoria Gonzalez (Raquel Rodriquez) & Sarah - as a consequence the two wrestle each other later. It's the only tag team battle royal I've ever seen where (appropos to Jan 17) nobody involved actually represents a regular team.

TVs
3rd in Jacksonville, Becky beats La Luchadora who's Alexa in a mask this time and Ambrose relieves Miz of the IC belt. Of note for 205 Live, Yoshihiro Tajiri beats Sean Maluta. 5th at Full Sail three matches go down that aren't used for TV - the Profits beat Bonini & Jaoude, Aliyah beats Mandy and - what a special dark main this is - Nakamura & Tajiri beat Joe & Roode. 9th in New Orleans Y2J & Kev beat Reigns in a handicap enabling Jericho to win the US title, next night in Baton Rouge before the taping Slater & Rhino actually beat the Usos. 14th in Blackpool the first night of the WWE:UK title tourney has a dark match - Star Talent beat Ringo Ryan & Tiger Ali about which little more needs to be said. Next night Tucker (not that one) and Saxon Huxley beat Nathan Cruz & Dan Moloney, however the real story is Aleister Black, who works and early evening Progress show in Birmingham (I was there) showing up to do a job to Jimmy Havoc as a favour (they also sent the injured Finn Balor to make a non wrestling appearance) then gets himself up the M6 to lose to Neville. And of course, Tyler Bate pins Pete Dunne to embark on the first WWE:UK title reign. 17th in Memphis Mojo pins Breeze before the show and Bliss retains the belt against Lynch in a cage match with help from another Luchadora who this time is the returning (not before time) Mickie James. 24th in Toledo there are two strong dark matches - Alpha defend the tag titles against Breeze and Dango before matches taped for telly and Styles pins Cena after them. Next night in Corpus Christi Deano retains his belt against Miz after a packed SmackDown where he’s already done 17 minutes with AJ.
It must be said that writing this concurrent to a couple of months of early 2015 and January 16 to keep it fresh and interesting for myself, the difference in star power, storylines, consistency of cards on both touring crews and overall direction for many talents is stark. Restoring the hard brand split was one of the best things they did in years.
NON TITLE WHINING
Beaten this month : Jericho (US Champ) by Zayn, Alexa (SmackDown Women’s champ) by Becky, Ambrose (Intercontinental champ) by Styles

DEPARTURES
Darren Young gets injured and come October is released.

FEBRUARY 2017

MAIN EVENTS - SMACKDOWN

4th-6th we still have the ICT on last - Dean Ambrose vs AJ Styles vs The Miz in Grand Forks ND, Winnipeg and Abbotsford. 11th in Las Cruces the champ is back and how about this? John Cena vs Randy Orton for the belt. I'd have liked to have seen that version. 13th in Oakland two tags combine as Cena & Luke Harper beat Orton & Bray Wyatt. 18th-19th in Edmonton and Saskatoon its back to Ambrose vs Styles vs Miz then 20th in San Diego it's again Cena & Harper vs Orton & Wyatt. Month end the belt's changed hands again so its Bray Wyatt vs John Cena vs Baron Corbin for the WWE title 25th in Moline and 27th in Dubuque IA either side of a four way with Harper in Cedar Rapids.

THE CARDS

American Alpha vs Heath Slater & Rhino vs The Usos vs The Ascension vs Tyler Breeze & Fandango is a tag title turmoil match early month, there's Bray Wyatt vs Luke Harper, a tag of Alexa Bliss & Carmella vs Naomi & Natalya, Dolph Ziggler vs Apollo Crews, Kalisto vs Baron Corbin after which Kalisto immediately redeems himself with Curt Hawkins and Mojo Rawley vs one or the other of The Vaudevillains. Mid month the tag title is a straightforward four-way without the Ascension as Konnor now loses to Mojo. Oakland and San Diego bookend week 3 with Dean Ambrose vs AJ Styles vs Corbin vs The Miz for the ICT. In Canada we get Alpha vs Breezango, Slater & Rhino beating the Ascension, Bliss & Carmella jobbing to (are these really the babyfaces??) Nattie & Tamina, and back to Crews vs Ziggler, Mojo vs English and Kalisto vs Corbin. Alpha vs Breezango vs Usos starts in San Diego and follows into week 4. 25th and 27th its Randy Orton vs Harper, same week Ambrose vs Miz is a straightforward ICT match, there's two rounds of Bliss vs Lynch vs Carmella vs Nattie vs Tamina, the rest is unchanged.

Seth Rollins tears an MCL in a full apart with Joe on Raw and looks a worry for Mania.

VARIATIONS

In Las Cruses there's Bliss vs Becky Lynch vs Carmella vs Naomi vs Natalya, Ambrose vs AJ vs Corbin (Miz off) and still Kalisto vs Hawkins, then in Oakland its Becky, Naomi and Nikki Bella vs Bliss/Mella/Nattie (we don't give a shit if Nattie is heel or face, do we?), Ziggler vs Kalisto and Crews vs Hawkins. In Saskatoon (grandad Stu's hometown) Nattie beats Alexa by DQ before the tag. In San Diego there's Bliss vs Lynch for the belt, Nikki & Tamina vs Carmella & Nattie, and Slater, Rhino & Mojo vs English & The Ascension. In Dubuque Nikki comes to work again - Bella/Lynch/Tamina beat Bliss/Mella/Nattie.

MAIN EVENTS - RAW

3rd in Broomfield CO and 5th in Eugene OR its Big Show vs Kevin Owens in a non title match (boo!) either side of Owens vs Sami Zayn for the belt 4th in Salt Lake City. 11th/12th in Anchorage and Fairbanks its Zayn & Roman Reigns (ho ho) vs Owens & Chris Jericho. 17th/18th in Dallas and Bakersfield we move to Reigns vs Braun Strowman then 19th in Long Beach the champ is back - Kev tags with Samoa Joe (ooo!) to lose to Reigns & Zayn. Month end in Germany the U champ is FINALLY winning some more matches - Kevin Owens vs Roman Reigns in streetfights headlines 22nd-25th in Dusseldorf, Nuremberg, Hannover and Regensburg.

THE CARDS

Salt Lake City and Dallas have the twin oddities of a pair of short Brock Lesnar vs Big Show matches. In the mountain states early month its Karl Anderson & Luke Gallows vs The Bar for the tag belts, all three New Day vs Titus O'Neil & The Shining Stars, Bayley, Sasha Banks & Alicia Fox vs Charlotte, Nia Jax & Dana Brooke, Big Cass vs Rusev, Adrian Neville vs Cedric Alexander for the Cruiserweight title, Sami Zayn vs Braun Strowman and Goldust, R-Truth & Sin Cara vs Bo Dallas, Curtis Axel & Jinder Mahal. Club vs Bar vs New Day and Cass & Enzo Amore vs Rusev & Jinder start in Salt Lake and continue in Alaska where we also get Zayn picking up DQ wins against Chris Jericho for the UST, Sasha & Bayley vs Charlotte & Nia, Neville vs Rich Swann, and Axel & Golden Truth vs Dallas & the Stars. In week 3 - look who it is! - Samoa Joe starts beating Sami, plus there are two instances of (face again?) Axel, Golden Truth & Sin Cara vs Dallas, Titus & the Stars, the rest largely unchanged. In Germany everywhere except Nuremberg our womens tag becomes Bayley retaining over Charlotte and The Boss doing the job to Nia, we're back to Braun vs Zayn, that same 8-man above, the same tag and Cruiserweight title matches and Rusev tag.

VARIATIONS

In Salt Lake there's the first instance of Golden Truth/Sin Cara/Axel vs Dallas/Titus/Stars - after which Axel talks himself into a shoeing from Strowman, plus the first Bayley vs Charlotte which goes to a DQ prompting the six-woman. Unique to Dallas is Sasha & Bayley vs Charlotte & Dana. In Long Beach Braun's back with Sin Cara and Show goes into the 8-man. In Nuremberg only the extra match is made up by Sin Cara vs Titus dropping out of the 8-man and going on as a singles.

MAIN EVENTS - NXT

Slow start in Florida - 3rd in St Augustine, Tye Dillinger & The Street Profits vs Eric Young, Killian Dain & Alexander Wolfe is a win for the goodies, next night in Largo Tye teams with Heavy Machinery and Asuka to beat the Sanity lads and Nikki Cross in a mixed 8-person. Week after the big guns are in the North East again, 9th and 11th its Shinsuke Nakamura, Johnny Gargano & Tommaso Ciampa vs Bobby Roode & Authors of Pain in Upper Darby and Albany either side of Nakamura & Kassius Ohno beating Roode and Andrade Almas in Asbury Park. 16th in Jacksonville Dillinger and the Profits are beating Noam Dar and AoP, next night in Tampa Shinsuke is in there with battle royal winner Patrick Clark, and 18th in Cocoa Wolfe/Dain/Cross go over the Profits and Liv Morgan. By 24th in Coral Gables the belt's changed hands and Roode vs Dillinger is for the title, next night in Fort Pierce Roode & Almas lose to Tye & Shinsuke.

B shows in Florida have the biggest name value match as probably Heavy Machinery vs Riddick Moss & Tino Sabbatelli 10th/11th in Venice and Gainesville.

THE CARDS

Authors of Pain vs Heavy Machinery repeats for the belts in St Augustine and Coral Gables. Asuka vs Nikki Cross vs Ember Moon recurs in Pennsylvania and New York as does Tye Dillinger vs Eric Young and Street Profits vs Alexander Wolfe & Killian Dain. We also have over 2 or 3 weeks - Aleister Black vs Andrade Almas, Roderick Strong vs Elias Samson, Kassius Ohno vs Patrick Clark, Daria Berenato vs Mandy Rose and Oney Lorcan vs Steve Cutler. Plus, Macey Estrella vs Dori Prange (Heidi Lovelace/Ruby Riott) repeats in Venice and Jacksonville.

VARIATIONS

St Augustine has Liv Morgan vs Rose and Daria vs Kimberly Frankele. In Largo, Almas vs No Way Jose, Ohno vs Buddy Murphy and Ember & Daria vs Mandy & Dori. Asbury Park sees Asuka vs Mandy for the belt, Ember vs Daria, AoP vs Johnny Gargano & Tommaso Ciampa rematch for the tag belts plus Dillinger vs Clark. Unique to Venice is Liv vs Kimberly. Gainesville get Jose vs Kona Reeves, Macey vs Morgan and Dori vs Kimberly. In Jacksonville it's Jose vs Clark, Asuka & Liv vs Mandy & Kimberly and Ohno vs Reeves. Tampa get AoP vs Riddick Moss & Tino Sabbatelli, Daria & Dori vs Kimberly & Macey, Ohno vs Elias, Strong vs Reeves and Morgan vs Billie Kay. Unique to Cocoa, it's Asuka & Dori vs Mandy & Macey. Coral Gables has Asuka vs Cross as a singles title match, Shinsuke Nakamura & Ohno vs Wolfe & Dain, and "Ruby Riott" vs Mandy. Finally in Fort Pierce it's Ember vs Mandy, AoP vs Profits, Ohno/Jose/Lorcan vs Sanity and for her fourth different singles opponent of the month Ruby wrestles Berenato.

TVs

1st at Full Sail, Mandy pins Dori as a dark opener and tons happens on the tapings including Peyton Royce doing triple duty, tagging with Billie to beat Liv and Ember, falling to Asuka and winning a contenders three way against Liv and Ember to earn another shot (according to the order they aired, not the order filmed) - plus an AoP/DIY rematch, Tyler Bate retaining the UK title against friend, partner and mentor Trent Seven, and Lance Anoa’i being involved in an AoP squash. Lance being grandson to Afa, making him related to both Reigns (son of Sika) and the Usos, of course. 6th Raw in Portland need a mention because in the main, Joe actually pins Reigns after the STJoe and a distraction from Strowman - had you forgotten this? I was pretty down on Reigns vs Braun as it seemed like yet another waste of time feud for Roman, diverting him from getting the belt back constantly because of other agendas, not befitting his status as next "top guy" at all. Next night Mojo pins Hawkins before the shows, SmackDown itself features the 2017 version of Cena vs Orton, and as a dark main Ambrose retains over Miz in a match refereed by eternal Miz enemy GM Daniel Bryan. Sunday 12th its Elimination Chamber which is a mixed bag in terms of booking but sound for action - an unprecedented 3 womens matches have Lynch get revenge on Mickie James, Bella vs Natalya go to a pointless double count out in a pointless match, and Naomi unseats Alexa with her split-legged moonsault with the idea of going into hometown Orlando for Mania with the belt. Plus Alpha look impressive retaining in a gauntlet, Orton pins Harper to bring his push to a crashing halt, and Bray wins a very exciting chamber match by pinning first Cena then Styles to win the WWE Championship. The action was sound but the booking of "we have to have Bray win the belt because Orton won the Rumble and we want it to be Orton vs Wyatt at Mania" felt booked backwards and forced, not unlike Jericho relieving Taker years earlier to facilitate Taker vs HBK and Y2J vs Edge, which was more forgivable. Next night on Raw Mark Henry shows his face to put Strowman over strong, and on last Bayley pins Charlotte strong to win the belt in her latest attempt, which while a strong pinfall win after the Bayley-To-Belly, is tainted by Sasha hitting "the Queen" with a chair just before. Next night on SmackDown Slater & Rhino beat Breezango dark, Naomi forfeits the belt because she injured herself in the finish two nights earlier, and Bray retains over Styles and Cena. 20th Raw at the Staples Centre Braun drops Show, Jax squashes Sarah Pierce and Banks satisfyingly beats Charlotte by submission after Flair allows herself to be distracted by Bayley fighting off Dana. Next night in Ontario CA Alexa beats Becky to get the title back - the next two main roster TVs aren't especially noteworthy. 22nd at Full Sail, Ruby beats Kimber in the dark match and of note on the tapings Priscilla Zuniga loses to Asuka - you may know her today as Diamanté.

NON TITLE WHINING

Beaten on TV this month : Ambrose, obviously (Intercontinental Champion) in a four-way with Miz, Ziggler and (winner) Corbin.

DEPARTURES

None that I know of.

Does this count as a match? Not really.

Nor this.

This does.
