A huge weekend with some main roster talent involved has Oba Femi vs Grayson Waller for the belt Friday 5th in Spartanburg and Sunday in Augusta GA, either side of Oba, Hank Walker & Tank Ledger vs Rusev, Ethan Page & Jasper Troy in North Charleston SC. 12th in Fort Pierce Oba defends against Shawn Spears, next night in Orlando Hank & Tank tag with Joe Hendry and Shiloh Hill to close against Dark State of Dion Lennox, Saquon Shugars, Cutler James & Osiris Griffin. What the hell kind of first name is “Cutler”??

THE CARDS

Lots of repeats from that triple shot. In order of name value - Raquel Rodriguez & Roxanne Perez vs Sol Ruca & Zaria in Spartanburg and Augusta, likewise Ricky Saints vs Rusev and Ethan Page vs Dragon Lee, it’s Jacy Jayne vs Kelani Jordan vs Maxxine Dupri for the title on both Saturday and Sunday, Trick Williams vs Shiloh Hill on Friday and Sunday both (as well as Fort Pierce) and Ivy Nile & Lash Legend vs Izzi Dame & Tatum Paxley in both North Charleston and Augusta.

Spartanburg has a tag title 3way with Dark State’s champions Osiris Griffin & Dion Lennox vs Cruz Del Toro & Joaquin Wilde vs Hank Walker & Tank Ledger, a Fatal Influence six-woman with Jacy and lieutenants Fallon Henley & Jazmyn Nyx beating Dupri, Jordan & Legend, and a six-person with American Made of The Creed Brothers and Nile beating The Culling of Dame, Shawn Spears and Niko Vance. In North Carolina, Dark State retain over the Creeds, Judgment Day win a three way over Ruca & Zaria and Nyx & Henley, the LWO beat Spears & Vance, Trick beats Lee, Hill loses to Grayson Waller and Saints beats Saquon Shugars. Unique to Augusta, all four Dark State beat Hank, Tank, Wilde and Del Toro, and the Creeds beat The Culling (Spears & Vance). In Fort Pierce Ruca & Zaria beat Nyx & Henley, Bronco Nima & Lucien Price vs Tyson DuPont & Tyriek Igwe rolls on, and there are wins for Paxley, Jaida Parker, Karmen Petrovic and Charlie Dempsey, over Brooks Jensen. Finally in Orlando Maxxine tags with Anthony Luke to lose to Channing Lorenzo & Arianna Grace, there’s an Evolve title match in Kali Armstrong vs Zena Sterling, plus Thea Hail vs Wendy Choo, wins for Jordan, Kale Dixon & Uriah Connors and Nikkita Lyons & Chantel Moore, and Jenson loses yet again, to Je’Von Evans.

1st Raw in suburban Paris they draw 23,000 and do a Groundhog Day main with “The Vision.” 2nd episode of NXT I mention because NXT UK alumnus Xia Brookside, currently of TNA, loses a Speed match to Candice LeRae. Near 17,000 turn up to the AllState on 5th SmackDown to see CM Punk reintroduce AJ Lee as his foil for Big Time Bex, Sami Zayn start his own version of the US title open challenge by himself challenging John Cena in a lovely bit of symmetry, and Giulia defends the virtually forgotten WUST against the equally forgotten Michin. 8th Raw in Milwaukee Julius Creed loses to Otis in an opener that hasn’t aired, and Nikki Bella does a clean submission job for Asuka on TV. 9th NXT, after last months fling with blindfold matches, Page loses to Tavion Heights in a flag match, and - random! - since WWE owns AAA now, they have Fabi Apache lose a Speed match to Lainey Reid. 12th SmackDown in Norfolk has a main of Randy Orton vs Drew McIntyre which even with most of the wrestlers having fewer matches than ever, feels really part time. Meanwhile over in Vegas, When Worlds Collide has plenty of interesting cross promotion matches, most notably Dominik Mysterio beating El Hijo del Vikingo for the Mega title in the main event. 15th Raw in Springfield MA The Vision are on last again, yawn. Next night a very eventful NXT Homecoming at Full Sail features Dame & Paxley come up short against main roster tag champs Alexa Bliss & Charlotte, returning hero Tyler Breeze lose to NA champ Page, and Fatal Influence defeated by Rhea Ripley, Stephanie Vaquer & Lyra Valkyria. SmackDown in Toledo the night before the PLE has defences for Zayn and CharLexi, and a proper Coliseum dark main of AJ Styles & Penta vs Finn Balor & El Grande Americano. Wrestlepalooza itself 20th in Indianapolis comes across as “big time” as a non Big 3 can for the first PLE on ESPN, with super-part-time talent wrestling, a title vacancy filled and a WWE title match - Cena falls to Brock Lesnar in (probably) their last ever match, Vaquer pins Io Sky after a show-stealing Sky Twister Press to win a cracking match and lift the vacant Women’s Silver Medal, Mr & Mrs Punk beat Seth Rollins & Becky Lynch in another match I rather enjoyed, and Cody Rhodes retains against Drew in a defence so predictable you wonder why it happened on PLE and question why it went on last. I have nothing to say about 22nd Raw but a surprisingly eventful month in NXT continues Tuesday when Jayne & Henley discover Nyx left lying after attack by a mystery assailant and just leave her with Jacy mentioning “drop the dead weight” and “only the strong survive.” Near 10,000 turn up to Orlando for the last Downers of September where Tiffany Stratton vs Nia Jax vs Jade Cargill will long be remembered for Jade being rendered a bloody mess, and a botched finish. Saturday 27th in Fort Lauderdale a very eventful No Mercy special for NXT sees a cage blowoff to Jordynne Grace vs Blake Monroe (who wrestled in combats) with a strong top rope table finish, Saints topples Oba for the big belt, and Jacy retains over Lola Vice thanks to our favourite trope, “mystery masked interference” - hilariously, WWE initially spoil it by posting “a shocking assist from Lainey Reid” on their results post, hastily redacted. After Toxic Attraction and Fatal Influence, I’m looking forward to Jayne/Henley/Reid rebranding as Unfavourable Inclination. 29th Raw in Raleigh has Styles & Lee beat two masked Americano clones (latest attempt to eke some value out of Pete Dunne & Tyler Bate), Ruca and Zaria show up and make overtures to the main roster tag belts and Roman Reigns re-returns for the dozenth time. Finally, to put a cap on a madcap 8 days, it’s made explicit Reid was indeed behind the attacks on Nyx and Vice - locking the stable door after the horse has bolted.

If you’ll excuse the editorial - just me, or does recycling an old PPV name with “wrestle” in the title feel like just the smallest self-high five for Hunter, a lifelong wrestling fan, given the distaste his mentally deficient father-in-law manifested over the years for terms like wrestling and wrestlers? Made me smile either way.

NO NON TITLE WHINING - Roadie on holibobs?

DEPARTURES 

On the 13th one of the most bewildering returns ever comes to an end as Andrade is released for the second time. I have no idea why more effort wasn’t made in finding a spot for a wrestler as good as him. As the sudden and high profile termination of her role in Fatal Influence gave away, the delightful Jazmyn Nyx finishes with the company the day after the episode airs. She’s not kept it quiet that a three year renewal offer was on the table but she didn’t consider the money offered worth it, so walked away. Good on her. Also, Edris Enofé requests and is granted his release despite a 5-0 record in singles on Evolve since the injury to regular partner Malik Blade. Ho hum.

It’s Dominik Mysterio vs CM Punk for the ICT for the ICT (fuck finish) Wednesday 15th in Melbourne and Friday 17th in the first of two nights at Sumo Hall, then on Saturday night Punk tags with national treasure Shinsuke Nakamura to topple Bron Breakker & Bronson Reed.

THE CARDS - REPEATS

There are big tags of Jey Uso & Shinsuke Nakamura vs Bron Breakker & Bronson Reed and Io Sky & Rhea Ripley vs Asuka & Kairi Sane, WUST of Giulia vs Bayley vs Lyra Valkyria plus Penta vs Kofi Kingston and LA Knight vs Rusev in Melbourne and first show in Tokyo.

THE REST

Melbourne has Stephanie Vaquer vs Roxanne Perez for the Women’s Silver Medal and men’s singles of AJ Styles vs El Grande Americano and spare man Ivar losing to Rusev before the Bulgarian brute talks himself into a match with Knight (Yeah!). Friday at Ryogoku Stephi turns back Raquel Rodriguez and it’s a Styles vs Americano vs Ivar triangle won by AJ. Saturday night it’s understandably a fresh card - Dominik Mysterio turns back Penta’s challenge, Giulia turns back Roxi, the “Kabuki Warriors” beat Valkyria & Bayley, Vaquer retains in a four-way against Ripley, Io and Rodriguez, Uso beats Rusev, Styles pins Kingston and Ivar beats Americano - LA (K)night off. Yeah.

MAIN EVENTS - NXT

So many shows here, it’s like having a proper circuit like the good old days! 3rd in Jacksonville Kelani Jordan vs Fallon Henley for the TNA Knockouts title(!) goes on last, 4th in Gainesville it’s Joe Hendry vs Cutler James. We have a long weekend in the North East, Thursday 9th in Columbus OH it’s Ricky Saints vs Oba Femi vs Je’Von Evans vs Josh Briggs for the NXT title, Friday in Detroit they play to the locals as Saints tags with The Motor City Machine Guns to beat Briggs, Trick Williams & Lexis King, then Saturday night in Cleveland it’s Saints vs Briggs on 5th of 9 and on last Ethan Page vs Johnny Gargano for the NAT. Back down in Flo Rida it’s Page vs Shiloh Hill 17th in Venice, and finally Oba, Myles Borne, Uriah Connors & Kale Dixon vs James, Dion Lennox, Osiris Griffin & Saquon Shugars night after in Dade City.

A loaded Columbus card sees Lennox & Griffin lose to Tommaso Ciampa & Johnny Gargano, Kelani Jordan beat Hail, Omos show up to beat King, Ethan Page beat Borne, Trick Williams beat Hill in the opener and Sol Ruca & Zaria vs Jacy Jayne & Fallon Henley. Friday night in Detroit there’s Jordan vs Hail vs LeRae vs Zaria for TNAs belt, Ruca vs Grey for, back to back, the Speed title (draw) and WNAT (Ruca by pinfall), Page vs Trey Miguel for the MNAT, Omos vs Borne and DIY, Hank Walker and Tank Ledger vs Dark State in James/Griffin/Lennox/Shugars. The big loop rounds off in Cleveland with Oba Femi vs Omos (!!), James/Griffin/Shugars beating Hill/Hank/Tank, Ciampa vs Lennox opening, Zaria vs Hail and King vs Borne. Venice is a bit C show but still see Je’Von Evans vs Conners, Tavion Heights vs Niko Vance and wins for Izzi Dame, Tyra Mae Steele, Oba, Hail and King (over Morreaux). Finally in Dade, Heights & Steele beat Lorenzo & Grace, Grey retains the Evolve title over ex champ Armstrong, Briggs drops Morreaux and Jordan retains the Knockouts title against a PJ Vasa. Incredible to think, five different women’s singles titles are getting defended in NXT.

TVs HIGHLIGHTS

7th at the PC they do Showdown in conjunction with TNA including names such as Frankie Kazarian, Mustafa Ali and The Iinspiration (Iiconics), and on last in a title for title The Hardy Boys (!) beat Dark State to win the NXT straps. In other matches taped, Pillman Jr does a job for El Hijo del Dr Wagner Jr and Tatum Paxley wins a contenders battle royal. 11th in Perth (13,500+) it’s Crown Jewel with a little more consequence than the average Saudi shitshow - they at least do a little to set up War Games. Plus Roman Reigns does a job for Reed that’s done nothing for Bron in the months since, and there’s the final (and divisive) match between Styles and John Cena. 17th SmackDown has a 10,000 gate in San Jose for three title matches including Ilja Dragunov winning the US title from Sami Zayn. 20th Raw in Sacramento (10,000 again) Styles and Dragon Lee win Raws tag titles from Judgment Day, 25th it’s NXT Halloween Havoc in Prescott Valley AZ which sees Blake Monroe (yum) win the WNAT from Ruca’s proxy Zaria, Paxley upset Jayne for the big one and Griffin & Lennox win the tag belts back from Matt & Jeff. 27th Raw in Anaheim is worth mentioning for Nikki Bella actually losing to Perez, and finally 31st Downers in Salt Lake there’s a dark main of Knight vs Solo Sikoa in a “Trick Or Treat” street fight.
