And I’m glad they’re not going back to using the Bellator name like was rumoured not too long ago. But I’m not even sure if Netflix are gonna want in on it anymore. I certainly can’t see them regularly airing shows, it’ll probably be the occasional one-off if there’s a big fight. Genuinely not sure where a ‘big fight’ is gonna come from though. It’s a wasteland out there. The UFC aren’t much better either at the minute, despite having 90% of the top talent. I just had a look at the card for UFC 330 because I’m hoping to get the thread up later and… Not great. It’s only two weeks away as well. They’re not likely to add anything significant now, and even if they do it’ll be thrown together last minute so not the fight it could’ve been. This is it? Some decent fighters on there but that undercard is wafer thin really. The Belgrade card on Saturday isn’t great, the Apex card next week is piss weak. Honestly looking at the schedule, there isn’t one card that looks genuinely great and certainly none that are anything resembling ‘stacked’. Sorry for the negativity 🤣 but Christ, I don’t remember a time when MMA as a whole was deader. Quote
Dai Posted July 30 Posted July 30 As much as you can say, "What is MVP MMA?", I think you can say the same about PFL. What is PFL, and why would MVP want to merge with them? PFL have been about for years, and have seemingly lost hundreds of millions. Didn't the Saudis pump 100s of million into it a few years back? Then they did another round of getting money. Its just one massive money pit, where I assume some smart people at the top are making a decent chunk of it. No idea why MVP would want any part of them. They offer nothing. Just a bizarre deal all around. Quote

It’s better for PFL to some degree but I just feel like this isn’t gonna be anywhere near as big a deal as people are making it out to be. They can know what they’re doing all they want but they can only work with the roster they have and I don’t see how it’s gonna translate to being this game changer many are talking it up as. It’s always good for the fighters to have other options though and I’ll be tuning in regardless. Quote

Dai Posted July 31 Posted July 31 Makes no sense that though, as one of the hottest prospects they had from the Netflix show has just signed for the UFC. Sends completely the wrong message. And as much as its a positive for the fighters themselves, its been proven time and time again that once they are out of the UFC, they are essentially worthless. Nearly every fighter is disposable now, so in terms of business, paying more money for fighters who are not a 'draw' is an awful plan. Basically, as far as i can see, it has absolutely no chance of doing anything remotely successful. The PFL has proved for years and years now that they have an unsuccessful business model. No idea what MVP can bring to change that, when UFC have completed squeezed every drop of their monopoly of the sport. Quote

The Parnasse fight was announced as a one fight deal before it happened so there was always a chance he was gonna goto the UFC, plus this whole MVP isn't launching properly until later in the year. I'm being overly optimistic about it, I just want it to work. Jake Paul is a disruptor at least, and if he can somewhat sticks a rocket up Dana White's ass, I'm here for it. Even just having an MMA promoter out there being enthusiastic about their fights and their fighters is going to be a breath of fresh air. Edited August 1 by Egg Shen Quote
jimufctna24 Posted August 1 Posted August 1 As I posted a few months ago, PFL is essentially what Bellator would have become had it continued, just under a different name (a better name), and slightly different production. I hope under MVP it at least becomes a well-run and well-promoted alternative, but I have to agree with the cynicism expressed above. Still, at least Ngannou vs Nemkov might happen now. I do have more hope for PFL/MVP than Coker's project though. Coker is a relic at this stage. Quote

Seen the Cyborg vs Rousey stuff start picking up a bit of steam again over the last few days after the PFL CEO mentioned it being a possibility but I’m not having that one. It’d be great if it finally happened but I can’t see any way Ronda goes for it at all. I think she saw the Carano fight as the perfect opportunity to get an easy win to exorcise her demons and close the MMA chapter of her life on a positive note. She’s not gonna want Cyborg in her life to ruin that. There’s a reason she made it crystal clear going into that Carano fight that she was gonna bounce immediately after. Quote

The press release thing mentioned it will run as a standard MMA promotion with a few mega events each year (which likely get the Netflix treatment), Rousey/Cyborg would fit nicely onto one of those. As well as Jake Paul/Nate Diaz, which i definitely see happening at this point. Quote

The Rousey fight would change things but it’s not gonna happen is it? From what I can tell, Cyborg’s upcoming fight is basically just her MMA farewell. I think she’s still planning to fight elsewhere. Imagine her in Bare Knuckle? And yeah, I think Jake Paul vs Nate Diaz is pretty much guaranteed at this point. Jake pretty much called him out on last night’s PFL show and said he was ‘ducking’ him. I’ve got no interest in that one though really. We already saw it. Maybe I’d be a little bit more into it if it’s under MMA rules. And Jake is claiming he’s gonna have make his MMA debut next year. We’ll see. Quote

About 6 episodes in and it’s been the best season in about 10 years i reckon. The weakest thing about the show so far has been Bisping and Cormier’s banter. Quote
