My Best Film: Carry On!

It's odd that they chose the "Emmanuelle" film to parody as well. It's a really dark, grim film. Especially the second half of the film.

I can't really think of another film they could have parodied — hardcore films were both a bit too strong and a bit too illegal in most circumstances in the UK, but it was surely a last throw of the cinematic dice at that point. The lower end of the British film industry was rapidly falling lower and lower, and the choice was probably dirtier or more violent — Emmanuelle was definitely a watchword for mildly porny movies, and thankfully (I mean, maybe thankfully) we were spared Carry On Straw Dogs, where Terry Scott pushes Ken harder and harder, till he just can't take any more.

They could have gone further into the tradesman route, jumping onto the Confessions Of / Adventures Of bandwagon. I'm sure they could have gotten a few gags about wood, screwing and banging from a carpentry based film.

Alternatively, they could have just made Carry On Emmanuelle funny.

I watched Confessions of a Window Cleaner the other week. It was actually quite solid. The sequels tailed off a bit but the first one is decent.

Yeah, all of the "Confessions of.." films are like dirtier "Carry On" films. More funny than rude. Not sleazy in anyway like the "Adventures of.." film series, which are all utterly depressing. "Adventures of..." films always seemed to be filmed in the pissing rain too, which made them look even worse. Arthur Mullard as well. Fucking Arthur Mullard is all over it.

A ton of these 70s British sex comedies were released. Keep an eye out for "Odeon Entertainment" on Amazon. Company has released a few.

Due to a chest infection picked up from smoking around 60 fags on New Years Eve, I've spent a day in my pants watching Carry Ons. Obviously, it's been a tremendous day, but fuck me - do I fucking hate Jack Douglas. Easily my least favourite regular. It's no coincidence his growing role matches with the downswing in quality. He's like the Omar White of Carry On.

There wasn't much love for him in my house when I was growing up. He was a one joke act, and at times it was horrendously out of place. Once he'd done the routine in Carry On Girls it had run its course. He's a bit like Stanley Unwin in that regard.

He's no better on the DVD commentary tracks. Every commentary is centred around how actors today don't know how to stub their toe on a door properly, and that he's 6'5. I think it's Carry On Dick where he mentions his height three times. He comes across as if he thinks his contributions are both hilarious and really clever.

I regard him as a reoccurring member of the supporting cast. He's not a part of the Carry On cast proper.

They were way out of steam by that point, though - who was left from the main cast for Emmanuelle? IIRC, the Confessions films were on their arse by that point too. Wasn't there a reason why the funding was drying up, pushing lower brow films even further downmarket?

Thing I remember from "Carry on Emmanuelle" is that some of the original cast just sat at a table in the kitchen for the whole thing. Don't think they actually moved. Kenneth Williams moved though. It was odd after a while.
