Although it was unintentionally hilarious at times (like when the Predator almost pulls the hot female lead) I still hated it.Totally agree. Was it just me or was there a scene where it looked they were about to kiss?yeh man, the chick looked like she was well into it until the Predator took his mask off, then she was like 'errr fuck that!'they shoulda got it on. The fact that it was such a dream movie and so easy NOT to fuck it up makes ti so much worse. It seriously colud have been the coolest and most fun action movie ever, but Paul W.S. Anderson...the worst director ever made the worst movie ever. I seriously hate that guy so much, I hope him and all his children are burned alive in their beds. Anyways, I watched a couple of films lately, and they are:Blood DiamondGood, but not as good as I was expecting. As a dramatic work, it works pretty well. It's tense, fairly well directed and the action scenes are very impressive, but as a movie with a message it misses the mark. Jennifer Connolly's character exists purely to lecture the audience and I strongly doubt anybody who sees this film will think twice when they're buying diamonds next time. As for the acting front, DiCaprio is excellent as Danny Archer, the seemingly cold-hearted mercenary who's sticking around for One Last Job . It's another strong, believable performance from the man, but I preferred his performance in The Departed and feel that's what he should have got the Best Actor nod for at this year's Oscars, however studio politics have decreed that this is the role he's up for. He's not going to win, but that's irrelevant really, because he's turned out another great characterisation here. His accent is spot on too. Hounsou is fine, but it's his usual tortured slave/rebel/delete as applicable role here, and he randomly shows way too much emotion in scenes that just don't need it. I had no idea it would be that great, otherwise I wouldn't have missed it first time round. Great characterisation, funny, endearing and an awesome soundtrack. Robert Downey Jnr stars as an author called Dito who returns back home to New York for the first time since he was a teenager to see his ill dad.  The film is mostly told in flashback, showing how Dito grew up and what happened to mkae him flee New York. It's not a very happy film, but it is excellent. Some really powerful scenes using great editing to heighten the tension and confusion.  It's probably only going to get a limited release in the UK but there is a trailer up at myspace.com/agtrysuk  If you liked 'Stand By Me' I reccomend this. ukedge87 Posted February 15, 2007 Share Posted February 15, 2007 Syriana I really enjoyed this film, and felt it brought up a WHOLE heap of good points of the Oil corruption etc in the middle east, however, it is cut so fast that you need to be making notes throughout just to know who is who and what is going on. Its not a film you watch to unwind, and it certainly expects its viewer to already have a substaintial amount of knowledge of Middle East Politics etc before watching. The only downpoint to the film, is on hindsight, it seems to be saying that all the middle eastern problems could be sorted by adheering to Western ideals (the "hero" of the piece, is the younger brother of the future oil tycoon, who aims to introduce democracy, women voting etc etc).  However, the flick is thought provoking, intelligent and well acted. Recomend viewing, if only to see what the director Stephen Gaghan has to say on the issue.   The Goonies  Without a shadow of a doubt, this film will have a place in cinematic history as one of the greatest cross-ever flicks ever! I just watched it and as an adult, its just as entertaining as it was when I first watched when I was 8. And it still took all my might not to yell out 'Hey yoooooou guys' as the credits rolled.  Strong child performances, a snappy script and some stunning special effects mean this isn't the sort of 80s flick you enjoy because of nostaglia (e.g. Karate Kid) but because it still holds true to the day.  Donner directs it gracefully, not dumbing down his camera direction or darker style for kids, and I think this is what originally drew me to the flick. Anyways, I watched a couple of films lately, and they are:Hannibal RisingI've never really been all that fascinated with the character of Hannibal Lecter, and I feel that Brian Cox's portrayal in the underrated Manhunter was far superior to the hugely overrated Anthony Hopkins version from Silence Of The Lambs. Hopkins went on to turn the character into a pantomime villain in the dire sequel Hannibal and the unneccessary plodding remake of Manhunter, Red Dragon. However, Thomas Harris was persuaded to write another Hannibal book and so here we are, with an incredibly pointless and unneccessary origin tale where the titular character is stripped bare and demystified and rendered utterly hollow by the end. If you really cannot come up with a better birth for your anti-hero and his reasons for murder and cannibalism than "Lithuanian Nazi-wannabes ate my sister" then you really should just leave well alone. In this abortion, Hannibal even learns the ways of the samurai. I'm not joking. Judging the film solely on it's merits, I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that everybody involved in the making of this film should not be allowed make a film ever again. With the exception of how hot Gong Li is, I cannot think of one single redeeming feature that this film has. Not one. Gaspard Ulliel, who plays Hannibal, is so terrible I cannot believe he was cast. Incapable of portraying emotion, he is unable to flesh out the character or add any depth to him, and as such, it's impossible to care about him one way or the other. Ulliel is merely a pretty-boy with no range who manages to sound like he's from England, Germany, Ireland and Austrailia when speaking one sentence, who somehow grows up to be well-rounded Welshman Anthony Hopkins. It doesn't work, he's shockingly miscast, as is Rhys Ifans, leader of the aforementioned Nazi-wannabe gang. I don't understand the casting of this film. I can picture the meeting now:"Right, you want someone thin but animalistic and brooding for Hannibal's nemesis, someone who can portray evil but also have a sense of confidence about them.... have you seen Notting Hill?" Ifans also plays his character like a smarmy Bond villain. His lackeys are shit too. Seriously the entire film is a mess, and Thomas Harris deserves most of the blame, for not only did he consent (in the face of a truckload of money no doubt) to write another Hannibal book purely so there could be another film, but he even wrote the screeplay to this debacle. Avoid.You don't happen to perhaps listen to the Kermode podcasts do you? And perhaps learn them off by heart? And live by his teachings? It is indeed. I need to see this, I've heard nothing but gushing praise, from many different sources.Ask Mr. Seven, Britain's greatest film critic felt the film was over-rated and underserved of its praise. Â Its not a revolutionary film but was enjoyable throughout and I felt warm and fuzzy inside by the end. Special highlights are the dialogue and great characters. Just a brilliant film. Incapable of portraying emotion, he is unable to flesh out the character or add any depth to him, and as such, it's impossible to care about him one way or the other. Ulliel is merely a pretty-boy with no range who manages to sound like he's from England, Germany, Ireland and Austrailia when speaking one sentence, who somehow grows up to be well-rounded Welshman Anthony Hopkins. It doesn't work, he's shockingly miscast, as is Rhys Ifans, leader of the aforementioned Nazi-wannabe gang. I don't understand the casting of this film. I can picture the meeting now:"Right, you want someone thin but animalistic and brooding for Hannibal's nemesis, someone who can portray evil but also have a sense of confidence about them.... have you seen Notting Hill?" Ifans also plays his character like a smarmy Bond villain. His lackeys are shit too. Seriously the entire film is a mess, and Thomas Harris deserves most of the blame, for not only did he consent (in the face of a truckload of money no doubt) to write another Hannibal book purely so there could be another film, but he even wrote the screeplay to this debacle. Avoid.You don't happen to perhaps listen to the Kermode podcasts do you? And perhaps learn them off by heart? And live by his teachings? I can tell you with 100% honesty that no, I do not listen to Mark Kermode's podcasts (until I saw your post I was unaware that he even had one) nor do I know what magazine/newspaper he reviews for. I'm guessing my opinion matched his and the thought of two people having the same opinion was too much for your delicate little brain to handle.Edit: Just noted that you highlighted the Brian Cox thing.
