It doesn't really sit well with me that when the other thread this discussion was in was hijacked, the first counter-argument was (as it too often is in this country) "you can't be 100% sure somebody actually did it" as opposed to "the state taking anybody's life is always wrong in principle"

Even if you accept Chutney Spoon's premise, that he so casually dropped into the previous convo as if we'd all agree, that one particular offence is somehow way worse than all the others people could be convicted of, reintroducing capital punishment would be a slippery slope that could then see it start being used for lesser crimes.

Describing an "example" of a case that he'd consider beyond the pale in gory, morbid detail which wouldn't even cross the minds of most right-thinking people is well dodgy too, just sayin'.

I'm more interested in the Danish model where they offer offenders counselling and help to try and work out the issues that led to the crime(s) being committed and support them through their rehabilitation.

We tried this with Bacon after he stole a pack of smokes.

There are three overall reasons for incarceration and all of them are valid.

- Retributive justice is important for society. People, on the whole, need to see wrongdoers punished and the moral order upheld. It's part of deterrence.

- Keeping wrong 'uns off the streets so they don't reoffend. More specific deterrence for those individuals by removing their means and opportunity.

- And finally rehabilitation. The other reasons are very valid, but we definitely don't focus on this nearly enough.

I think it was me that mounted that argument, and while absolutely agree with you, I don’t think there’s much point raising that point with someone who is pro-death penalty, as they’ve clearly already decided they’re fine with the idea of the state taking a life. Best chance of getting them to reconsider is to point out how dangerous the punishment is.
