As days are passing, the more I think about the more frustrated about last Saturdays Main. Stipe looked terrible, completely out of fight shape, because of this Jones never had to move out of first gear. It's hard to tell if he looked good or bad.

I've written off Jones so many times in the past and been made to eat my words every time but i do get the feeling father time has caught up with him and he knows.

Worst thing is you know as soon as he retires he will be sh!t tweeting every champ.

He’s still been having sly digs at Aspinall despite clearly having no intentions of fighting him. It’s the weakest shit ever.

Also, Helwani’s doing my head in with bollocks like this….

I get it, he’s a huge pro wrestling fan. And although I’m very much a ‘lapsed fan’ these days when it comes to pro wrestling, I’ll always love it to some degree. Even though I barely ever actually watch it anymore, there isn’t really a day that goes by without me either reading stuff on here about what’s going on, or listening to a podcast, or watching an old match or something. I don’t think I’ll ever fully get wrestling out of my system. But fuck me, Ariel has to make literally everything about pro wrestling. Talking about Jones “playing the heel”. Ever think he’s not ‘playing’ at that? The man who beat his wife bloody in front of their kids, what was that just method acting? And convincing himself this is all some elaborate long term storyline where he’s subtly manipulating us and ‘working us’ to wanna see the Aspinall fight more is a massive stretch. The much simpler and more likely and realistic explanation is that Jones just doesn’t want the fucking fight. Not everything has to be a work or an angle.

The annoying thing with this now is, if the fight does somehow happen, say old Turki gets involved and makes Jones an offer he can’t refuse, divs like Helwani will be saying this proves Jones is a genius, he always wanted to fight Aspinall but was just ‘building the fight’ all along. As it stands right now today, I’m as close to 100% convinced that Jones simply doesn’t want the fight and he’s content to just walk away if necessary. What he’s doing now isn’t an attempt to ‘build’ anything. If it does end up happening it won’t be because he wanted it, it’ll be because they offered him so much money he’d be able to live with the risk and the idea of possibly losing. Problem is I can’t see them offering him anything like that because when do they? It might take a Turki intervention at this point.

Great post! And I agree. Never thought about the Saudi money playing a factor in it happening, which I think is the only way it happens. Still cant see it, mind. I think Jones would much rather take 50% of what the max offer Dana would make for the Aspinal fight, and just fight Derrick Lewis instead.

Agreed. And if that’s all he wants to do, I’d rather he just fuck off forever. Can’t be doing with him anymore, or his fanbase hyping up his meaningless hollow wins as if they’re impressive or legacy boosting. Just go away.

Hate to do a 'David' and be the contrarian but I saw the whole situation similar to what Ariel described. I mentioned myself enjoying fight week last week and it was down to the reasons he described, it was like a storyline playing out over the course of the week in real time.

I haven't mentioned the actual fight at all, but it was a tad depressing. Stipe looked shot to shit, but I think any fight he had left was beaten out of him round 1. If that round had played out differently it may have been a different kind of fight but that 1st round finished him.

Two other small notes...

Paul Craig can go. Like him as a personality, but his UFC career has played out. To be soundly out kickboxed for 3 rounds by a novice striker and not once attempt to initiate a clinch or takedown to get the fight where you need it was a unforgivable, he was awful. He should have at least had the chops to make Bo Nickal question himself and go for a takedown, he did nothing.

Oban Elliott is flying. Guy is now flying the flag for Welsh MMA. When we spoke about him years ago on here when he was about 4-0, we recognised the star quality he had but I wasn't sure he'd make it translate into the cage. Such a likeable fella too and super appreciative of the position he's finding himself in. Love to see it.

I think it’s all just wishful thinking though. It did seem like it was playing out like a storyline but Helwani crediting Jones with that as if it was deliberate masterful fight promotion was silly talk.

People wanna believe Jones is gonna fight Aspinall so they’re looking into things and overanalysing it and hoping Jones is just working us all. I think that’s giving him too much credit. We all know how sensitive Jones is when it comes to criticism. I seriously doubt he’d have ever willingly put himself in this position where so many people are questioning his courage and calling him a duck. He’s trying to play it off as if he doesn’t care by changing his avi to a duck but it clearly bothers him the way he’s been replying to every fucker on Twitter and stuff. How long’s he planning to ‘build’ this thing and when is it gonna be long enough for people to see it for what it is? I’ve never seen a fighter (the most ego driven, macho obsessed of all sports) build a fight by making themselves look like a big bitch like this. Least of all someone as in love with the smell of their own farts like Jon Jones. It just doesn’t ring true. Sometimes the most simple explanation is the correct one. I don’t think Jones is scared of Aspinall man to man. But he’s definitely scared of possibly losing. His whole personality seems to be that he’s this invincible GOAT fighter. He doesn’t want the risk. When he’s coming out and actually saying shit like this…

Top fight building that! Publicly saying he wants to be paid an amount of money where he’d be able to live with a loss? Not enough was made of that quote. It’s the most telling thing he’s said in all of this, and probably the most truthful and honest thing he’s said in years. I don’t know what more people need to hear before they realise he just doesn’t want the fight.

All that said, it could still end up happening. That doesn’t mean that right now Jones is secretly fully intending to fight Aspinall and this is him trying to make the fight bigger though. It is making it bigger, but I seriously doubt it’s by design. The way he’s going about it doesn’t line up with everything we know about Jones and his fragile ego. If it happens, it’ll be because they come up with a number that Jones is willing to risk his precious legacy for. Helwani’s way too wrestling/“it’s a work” brained.
