The fast moving 90’s

I still remember renting out old Wrestlemanias after watching 7. I pretty much found 1-4 almost unwatchable, an 6 year old me just couldn't get around it. 5 and 6 had a lot of the same wrestlers as 7, although 5 was different it was watchable. 

I also find it amazing that in the LOD return in the late 90s they are treated as old gits basically, I'm pretty sure Animal was still in his 30s. They moved around like they were a lot older as they'd had several injuries. Working all those house shows, the territories and Japan tours they must have had more matches by their mid 30s than a wrestler would aged 50 these days.

A tangent, but I found it weirder that they had a run in the mid-2000s, and Heidenreich became an official member of LOD.

This is, in particular, is a period of sweeping change necessitated by (mostly) departures. Going into SummerSlam, you had Hart Foundation vs everyone else with the main enemy being Austin and Shawn, with Taker drawn into their orbit by virtue of having the belt and the other three wanting it. Suddenly Shawn’s a heel, Austin’s hurt and Brets been convinced to give his notice. No major flap but by Survivor Series Kane is coming in and the New Age Outlaws are becoming a featured act, it’s dawned on them that Owen & Smithers need replacing as top heels in the tag division fairly sharpish. As an aside here, it always made me smile playing Warzone with a playable roster including Bret, Kane and Bulldog when the three men were only active wrestlers on TV (at least concerning the Kane gimmick) at the same time on one night. It’s the game of Survivor Series 1997.

Of course, with Bulldog gone and Owen on hiatus they swiftly move to make proper upper midcard fixtures of Hunter as Shawn’s #2 and the latest Nation incarnation, even going so far as to plan Rocky to beat Stone Cold for the ICT at In Your House (before Steve said no to it). Throw on the DX music/entrance facelift, TAFKA Goldust, a new look Jeff Jarrett and Dude Love/Mankind taking a backseat and Cactus Jack becoming a full time character, and the roster of the Rumble has a completely different look (and colour palette) to that of Bad Blood and Survivors just a couple of months earlier.

Then after Mania it’s shuffled again!

In WCW in 1993/94 you had Dustin Rhodes, Cactus Jack, Jean Paul Leveque and Steve Austin as mid/lower carders. 
 

4 years later they are all superstars in their own right in the WWF.

And 30 years on Dustin’s the one still active in ring and currently a double champion
