MMA Fight Of The Year: 1) Glover Teixeira vs Jiri Prochazka (UFC 275: Teixeira vs Prochazka - Jun 11) 2) Gilbert Burns vs Khamzat Chimaev (UFC 273: Volkanovski vs Zombie - Apr 9) 3) Matt Schnell vs Su Mudaerji (UFC Fight Night: Ortega vs Rodriguez - Jul 16) 4) Dustin Poirier vs Michael Chandler (UFC 281: Adesanya vs Pereira - Nov 12) 5) Damir Ismagulov vs Guram Kutateladze (UFC Fight Night: Kattar vs Emmett - Jun 18) Best MMA Fighter: 1) Alexander Volkanovski 2) Leon Edwards 3) Alex Pereira 4) Demetrious Johnson 5) Islam Makhachev (This was a bit trickier than I expected actually. Just because most of the seemingly obvious choices only really had one great win this year. But whatever, I think these 5 are all worthy based on their best wins this year. Edwards over Usman and Pereira over Adesanya are the easy picks but I think Volk absolutely should be up there for his ridiculous performance against Max Holloway in their third fight). Rising Star: 1) Shavkat Rakhmonov 2) Ilia Topuria 3) Jack Della Maddalena 4) Alex Pereira 5) Yazmin Jauregui (Might seem odd including Pereira in ‘Rising Star’ when he’s now a UFC champ but he started the year with only one UFC fight under his belt and he still hasn’t had 10 fights since switching to MMA yet. His rise from UFC debut to UFC champion was one year total. The other 4 deserve highlighting and have been a breath of fresh air for me to watch in their respective divisions this year). MMA Event Of The Year: 1) UFC 281: Adesanya vs Pereira (Nov 12) 2) UFC Austin: Kattar vs Emmett (Jun 18) 3) UFC London: Volkov vs Aspinall (Mar 19) 4) UFC 275: Teixeira vs Prochazka (Jun 11) Best Knockout: 1) Leon Edwards (vs Kamaru Usman (UFC 278 - Aug) There’s been a couple of prettier or flashier knockouts but the context and significance of this one puts it at #1 for me. Not only was Edwards the big underdog going in, he was up against one of the most dominant champions in Welterweight history who’d already beat him once before. Then he’s losing this rematch and with less than a minute left in the fight, he lands that kick. 2022 wasn’t exactly a blockbuster year for MMA but this is definitely the moment I’ll remember most from it. Absolute madness. One of those legendary knockouts that will be replayed forever. Easily the single biggest win and accomplishment by a UK fighter in UFC history as well. 2) Michael Chandler (vs Tony Ferguson - UFC 274 - May) 3) Demetrious Johnson (vs Adriano Moraes - ONE Championship - Aug) 4) Alex Pereira (vs Sean Strickland - UFC 276 - Jul) More than the KO itself, this is here because I just loved it the actual result. Maybe the most purely satisfying fight to watch for me all year, to be honest. Just because of how much of a STD riddled penis Strickland is. The fact he was mouthing off about Pereira’s striking being shite beforehand made this all the sweeter. Lovely stuff. Proper ‘heel gets his comeuppance’ payoff. 5) John Lineker vs Bibiano Fernandes (ONE Championship - Mar) ‘Hands Of Stone’ doing ‘Hands Of Stone’ things. Pereira's nominated based almost entirely on the title win, but has two other wins to go with it. MMA Rising Star - Shavkat Rakhmonov - Ilia Topuria - Arman Tsarukyan Best Knockout - Alex Pereira over Sean Strickland - Leon Edwards over Kamaru Usman - Gregory Rodrigues over Njokuani. As much for the insane comeback as anything really. That he survived with half of the inside of his head visible, but to then come back and get the TKO. Our man Robo Barack is something else.
