No. 4: Kris Travis

Sheffield's own Kris Travis earns his fifth UKFF UK50 ranking, finishing inside the Top 10 for the second time in the last three years and appearing in over 6 of every 10 sets of votes received. In doing so, Travis finishes ahead of his regular 'Project Ego' tag team partner Martin Kirby for the second time in the five years they have both featured in the rankings.

Travis' Project Ego exploits alongside Kirby, including IPW:UK, SWE, NGW, PWE, PBW and Infinite Promotions, were covered in full in Kirby's UKFF UK50 entry at #7.

As a singles wrestler, Travis rose through the ranks of Preston City Wrestling to become the nightclub-based promotion's lead babyface. He

of the inaugural PCW Heavyweight Championship tournament at 'Road to Glory' in September 2011, but was back the following month to represent the home side at 'PCW vs. PBW'. There, Kris faced Lionheart of the the guest Scottish organisation, entering a PCW star-making performance
which remains one of the Preston group's most talked about contests. Travis came out the losing end of that one after a drawing-pin-assisted frog splash gave Lionheart the victory. At 'Festive Fury', the increasingly-popular Kris beat Joey Hayes, Martin Kirby, El Ligero, Bubblegum and CJ Banks
to earn PCW's version of the Money in the Bank briefcase. Travis teased cashing his title shot in later that same night, after champion T-Bone had just come through a gruelling bout with Mikey Whiplash in the main event, but instead
to an 'I Quit!' rematch. With his MITB briefcase on the line, Kris beat Lionheart in February 2012 in another brutal encounter, featuring more violence, to put them 1-1.

Travis beat Marty Scurll in March, battled PBW again as part of a 12-man tag match in April and defeated Dave Mastiff in a great bout in June. After that one,

that he would definitely be cashing in his MITB shot in August at the end of PCW's first anniversary event. That show, 'One But Not Forgotten', came in August after the end of the 2012 UKFF UK50 eligibility period. Travis first overcame Rampage Brown in a Yorkshire derby earlier in the night then, sporting a dislocated shoulder, stayed true to his word and emerged at the end of the night when his rival Lionheart had just beaten T-Bone, Mastiff and Davey Richards in a 4-way to win the Heavyweight Title. A quick superkick, and Travis defeated Lionheart to lift the Championship and secure his palce as PCW's top star.

Elsewhere, Travis has faced Marty Scurll, Mark Haskins, Max Angelus and Stixx in highly-regarded singles matches for Southside Wrestling Entertainment, as well as falling to SWE Champion Greg Burridge in a title shot and overcoming partner Martin Kirby in a 2-out-of-3-falls rematch from Pro Wrestling 101 at SWE's first anniversary show. He was also a regular part of UKW's series of TV tapings in Wakefield against a variety of opponents. In addition, although not having appeared n the promotion for a number of years, Kris appeared as a 'wild card' representing GPW in their battle with XWA at the 'Vendetta' event in Lancaster in July, falling to SPud in a fun opening match but ending up on the winning side of the deciding 4 vs. 4 Only The Strong Survive elimination tag match later on.

It should also be mentioned that Travis does indeed have shit on the market:

What did the UKFF think?

"Project EGO have been consistantly entertaining and Travis is arguably the more gifted"

"Love the heel trav who can always get some heat. His face turn in SWE is ok but he just doesnt do it for me"

"I'm really glad he didn't follow through with his decision to retire/take a break last year. By being more selective with his bookings Kris seems to be re-enthused about the business, and it shows. Whether it is in singles or as part of Project Ego, Kris delivers every time"

"It would have been a terrible shame to see such a talented wrestler like Kris Travis hang up his boots when it was mooted earlier in the year, but since then it seems like Travis has thankfully reconsidered and has been on what is possibly one of the hottest streaks of his career. He is adored by the PCW crowd for putting on some of the best matches the fledgling company has seen so far (Lionheart, Scurll, Mastiff all spring to mind) and is always great as part of Project Ego who are not far behind LDRS in the UK tag team steaks. One frustrating note of his year would be that he has often been overlooked when promoters pick their matches for the big imports. One of the times he got his chance, against Pac, he certainly lived up to his end of the bargain and he and the latest WWE signing probably had the match of the night. But his lack of big name, overseas opponents are not Travis fault and I

So that's Noam Dar, Zack Sabre Jnr and El Ligero as the top three. Can't really argue with those choices.

I believe Ligero will get the top spot for the second year running. I saw Ligero 8 times in the eligibility period and half of those times he was in the MOTN. His match against Tozawa was a genuine MOTYC and really enforced just how good he is. Like Doug Williams before him he is one of England's consistently good best to the point where it's quite easy to forget just how good he truly is because you expect such a high standard to begin with.

No. 3: Zack Sabre Jr

Score: 305 points

Total 1st place rankings in 2012 votes: 9

Percentage of 2012 ballots including Zack Sabre Jr: 50.9%

(2011=2nd, 2010=5th, 2009=5th, 2008=10th, 2007=50th, 2006=NL, 2005=NL)

Last year's runner-up, Zack Sabre Jr again misses out on the top spot, though claims his fourth consecutive Top 5 ranking (and has finished in the Top 10 in 5 of the 6 years he has appeared in the list). Hailing from the Isle of Sheppey, Kent, Sabre has been absent from British rings for approximately half of the 2012 UKFF UK50 eligibility season due to international commitments, though when available he receives rave reviews for appearances in the south-east and midlands, and guest appearances further north. Sabre Jr appears both as a top-rated singles competitor and also half of what is widely regarded Europe's top tag team, the LDRS of the New School, with Marty Scurll. Zack also secures more individual first place rankings by far that any other wrestler in this year's UKFF UK50 so far.

This year's UKFF UK50 period started with Zack away on tour with Pro Wrestling NOAH in Japan. He featured in the annual NTV G+ Cup Junior Heavyweight Tag League alongside Taishi Takizawa, the pair finishing with 2 wins from their 4 'group stage' matches but failing to advance to the knock-outs. Following the conclusion of the tourney, Zack would stay in Japan until October 2011, usually on the losing end against virtually all of NOAH's heavyweight and junior heavyweight stars, often paired with Mexico's Ricky Marvin. He wrestled former GHC Heavyweight Champions Kenta Kobashi and Takeshi Morishima as well as appearing on Kensuke Sasaki's NOAH-affiliated Kensuke Office/Diamond Ring shows.

Returning to the UK, Zack was in high demand in all four corners of the land, appearing for CRW in Newcastle, IPW:UK in Portsmouth, winning the Premier Promotions Middleweight Title against Andy Simmonz in Sussex and challenging Adam Pearce for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship in Kent in October alone. That same month also included a triple-shot weekend in Scotland, facing Noam Dar for PWE, taking part in the annual King of Cruisers match for PBW and involving himself in the Liam Thomson vs. Andy Wild series for a 3-way in ICW. November included a fascinating mat battle with Jack Gallagher in GPW in Wigan, a swing with ATTACK! Pro Wrestling in the West Midlands (including

) and a defence of the LDRS' British Tag Team titles as Zack and Marty defeated The Young Bucks in a fun contest in Sittingbourne on IPW:UK's '7th Anniversary Show'. Sabre wrapped up 2011 by winning the 'Ken Joyce Trophy' in Premier, beating Darrell Allen and Zulu Prince in a Bournemouth one-night tournament.

2012 included further appearances for Premier Promotions (including bouts with Rishi Ghosh, Joel Redman, Sam Steel and others) and Germany's wXw, where he beat England's Jon Ryan and Japan's Yoshihito Sasaki over 2 days to go to the semi-finals of the 2012 16 Carat Gold tournament, before being eliminated by Holland's Emil Sitoci on Day Three. Back in IPW:UK, Zack was part of the one-night Bracket B matches in the British Cruiserweight Championship tournament. He beat Wild Boar in a good first round match, but failed to set up a final against partner (and Bracket A winner) Marty Scurll when he was beaten by US indie star Sami Callihan in the tremendous thriller of a Bracket B final. He did get that long-awaited (by the fans, at least) bout with Scurll, however, on the debut event of THIS IS PROGRESS in London; Zack going down to Marty in many southern fans' choice for 2012 UK Match of the Year.

Sabre Jr appeared for Preston City Wrestling in a 4-way at 'Blood, Sweat and Beers' and the LDRS retained their IPW:UK British Tag Team Titles against Jimmy Havoc & Danny Garnell in Swanley and Jonny Storm & Dean Allmark at 'BritWresFest 2012', before Zack ended the UKFF UK50 eligibility period the same way he started it - on tour in Japan once again with Pro Wrestling NOAH. Since the end of the eligibility season, Zack returned to the UK in August for a brief period (including another well-received bout with Scurll for SWE, a defence of his Triple-X Wrestling title against Prince Devitt, Adam Shame and Jimmy Havoc, a bout against DG:USA Champion Johnny Gargano for IPW:UK and a loss of the LDRS' tag belt to Project Ego) before jetting off back east again, where he remains at the time of writing.

What did the UKFF think?

"Seems to have found a new BritJapMMA style that sets him apart. Was the best before and can't wait to see how good he is after being in Japan"

"best technical wrestler the uk has produced in along time"

"Undeniably half of the country

I had Zack down to win it. With him spending more and more time in Japan, this might be his last shot for a while!

Last year was his year I felt, and he was fucking well robbed then. I'm surprised to see him so high if I'm honest because of his time away.

Personally I wouldn't have had Noam ahead of him overall, as I do see Noam as a Zack lite, but given how Zack has split his time I'm chuffed to see him in the top 3 because he hasn't been about as much as he once was.

Any way, Ligero for the win

No. 2: Noam Dar

Score: 367 points

Total 1st place rankings in 2012 votes: 4

Percentage of 2012 ballots including Noam Dar: 70.2%

(2011=19th, 2010=43rd, 2009=NL, 2008=NL, 2007=NL, 2006=NL, 2005=NL)

dar1j.jpg

The incredible rise of Noam Dar results in nearly 3 quarters of all UKFF UK50 voters including him in their individual Top 15s, securing the runner-up spot in only his 3rd ever appearance in the rankings. Despite having only recently turned 19 years of age (when we did the first ever UKFF UK50, he was only 11...), the Scotland-based star is already an established star for BCW, PBW, PWE and ICW, as well as now making regular guest appearances in England for IPW:UK/Revoution Pro, PCW, SWE and one-off slots for others.

Since losing his Tag Team Titles earlier in 2011, Dar's PBW opponents included former partner Liam Thomson, Tim Wylie, Jamie Feerick, Blaze n' Rampage,

, Red Lightning, Scott Maverick and Taylor Brydon. Over in BCW, he clashed with Andy Wild and Darkside before landing a spot in the 4-way, double-title TLC main event of 'No Blood, No Sympathy IX' in Kilmarnock in December against Lionheart, BT Gunn and Wild. He failed to come away with either the Heavyweight or Openweight championship, but has been in the championship mix ever since. In February 2012, he overcame both Gunn and Red Lightning in a 3-way to become the number one contender to Andy Wild's Openweight belt, and headlined back-to-back shows in May (Kilmarnock) and June (East Kilbride) in losing efforts against Heavyweight Champion Lionheart. Noam also beat top English wrestlers Joey Hayes, Kris Travis and Martin Kirby in a 4-way on Pro Wrestling Elite's debut event in Ayr last July, then continued the theme by beating Zack Sabre Jr in October and Mark Haskins in April 2012.

Dar defended his ICW Zero-G Title against Falcon at 'Never Mind the Baws' in July 2011, but was unseated by Lionheart at 'SummerBam' the following month as Gold Label members took charge of all the ICW belts. Noam won that one back in a rematch at 'Fear and Loathing 4' in October, as the Gold Label began to crumble. After an appearance in the 30-man 'Square Go!'rumble in January, 2012 in ICW has pitted Dar against Andy Wild. Dar retained in a singles match in April, before he and Wild were paired together for the ICW Tag Team Title tournament in May, losing to The Coffeys in the first round. Dar bested Wild again a 4-way with the Coffey brothers again in June, before Wild finally overcame Dar in a 3-way (with Christopher) in July to take the title.

In England, Dar went to the final of the PCW Heavyweight Title tournament by defeating 'Disco' Sam Bailey and

, before falling to
at 'Road to Glory'. A couple of weeks after that, he returned to the north-west again in a
on the Friday and a FutureShock Wrestling encounter with Zack Gibson on the Sunday. He would be back down in England again the following 2 weekends too, first in Newcastle for CRW 'Rise or Fall', then in Nottingham where
before Dragon Gate UK's biggest show to date. After this, he went on a winning streak in PCW, getting the better of El Ligero in October, Dean Allmark, Joey Hayes & Zack Sabre Jr in a February 4-way, Allmark in March and Dave Mastiff in April. After the end of the eligibility period, it continued with him winning the vacant Cruiserweight Title in an energetic August 6-way then retaining in a fabulous September 3-way over Ligero and Hayes.

Further south, Dar was selected to replace an injured Martin Stone to face former ROH World Heavyweight Champion Eddie Edwards at IPW:UK's '7th Anniversary Show' in November. He entered as an unknown and, although he didn't win, his performance resulted in him becoming somewhat of a regular in the promotion. He was back as part of the Cruiserweight Title tournament in February, where he fell to another US indie star in Sami Callihan after a captivating hard-hitting cracker, then part of the big 'Revolution' supershow in London in a 6-way Ladder Match. He was back again at 'Summer Sizzler' in August against NJPW's Prince Devitt, and recently featured on the 2-night 'Uprising' weekend in October 2012.

Other exploits have included Infinite Promotions, SWE and

in England, FFPW in Ireland and wXw in Germany, where Dar appeared as a supporting act to the 2012 '16 Carat Gold' tournament. Even with all this, there is evidence that the 2013 period is going to be greater still, as at the time of writing Dar has already shared the ring with top international stars AJ Styles, Davey Richards, Jerry Lynn and Prince Devitt, has a bout scheduled with former WWE superstar John Morrison for December, will appear as a key UK member of the Dragon Gate 2013 tour and will probably have many more top level attraction matches that haven't even been thought of yet.

What did the UKFF think?

"The upcoming star mixes swagger and technique and for a guy his age really gets less-is-more"

"the next Zak; Tom Daley crossed with Victor Meldrew"

"He's 18... 18! He has the ring presence of a seasoned veteran and can stand toe to toe with the best wrestlers that not only Britain, but the world has to offer"

"He always had potential but his very strong showing in the DGUK dark match seemed to spark the start of a hot streak that he has rode to the top of the UK scene. Great matches with Dean Allmark, Eddie Edwards, Zack Sabre Jnr, Dave Mastiff, amongst others have really highlighted how talented the young Scotsman is, to the point where he is being handpicked as the best man to represent his companies against huge imports like AJ Styles and Davey Ricahrds. 2012 was definitely the breakthrough year for Dar who went from being an up and comer to a genuine star of the British Wrestling scene"

"The Boy is a bit special isnt he?"

"From pcw to southside to progress every time ive seen him on a card he has been the highlight"

"The next big thing from the uk"

"Something special. Has amazing matches with all he faces"

"Been excellent where ever ive seen him"

"Without a shadow of a doubt should be somewhere in the top 10 of this list. He has grown into a great talent and as of writing this will be facing his idol in, AJ Styles on Saturday. This match will be his biggest test. Has travelled up and down the UK as well and will certainly gain more bookings as the year advances. He certainly is one to watch!"

"Still trying to find his identity as a performer, I've included him solely on the basis of how much potential he has!"

"Was pleased to see him at Dragon Gate after hearing lots about him and he was very impressive and has been the couple of times i've seen him since. Similar style to Zack Sabre Jr (which is no bad thing) but still stands out of the crowd"

"Has worked everyone and anyone in the last year in the UK and beyond and I have never seen him in a bad match. Was good to see him tone down and start focussin on storytelling"

"He's been superb every time ive seen him including this year at GPW i cant believe hes so fucking young"

"Whilst he may appear to be a rip off of ZSJ to most, that's not always a bad thing. Once he finds his own character and mannerisms this guy will definitely be destined for greater things"

"The next generation of Zack Sabre Jr, it's hard to believe this guy is still in his teens... went from being a late replacement for Martin Stone against Eddie Edwards in IPW:UK and dark match competitor against Daniel Robert at Dragon Gate in Nottingham to one of the guys I most look forward to seeing compete... one of the stars of Progress Wrestling, a narrow defeat against El Ligero was more than offset by the fact he looked a cut above in his victory over Darrell Allen at Chapter Two: The March of Progress... will surely be a top 5 guy next year, having already faced AJ Styles and with Davey Richards and Prince Devitt in his near future"

"Incredibly talented youngster delivers in every expectation. Sometimes neglects his awesome heel charisma in 'dream' match settings, but he doesn't need me to say how big a future he has. Him and Zack Sabre should be forced to wrestle each other for all eternity. Their match from Pro Wrestling Elite last year and interactions at PCW earlier this year were some my favourite moments in wrestling in a long time"

"Fantastic young and hungry wrestler. Has been working alot of big names as of late and can work with anyone in any style"

"Breaking out in a similarly quick way to Pac 5-6 years ago"

"If you have not seen his Southside Speedking debut then you should. The finishing section with Marty Scurll is brilliant"

"so talented, has a good presence about him"

"Young, talented and someone to lead Scottish wrestling in years to come. Wrestles with the mind and of someone beyond his years, and this is starting to show with promotions giving him big matches against international stars"

"Had a cracking year, and things will only get better for him"

"it's scary how good he is, as he's just turned 19! Great matches with the likes of Ligero, Wild and Bailey!"

"its hard to believe he is only 18 yet he is almost seen as a scottish veteran - great all rounder and a fantastic heel. pretty soon he will be on the tv screens a lot more"

"A real star! Nice to see one of the Scottish lads getting bookings all over the UK!"

"Scarily good considering his age, not a case of if he is a future star, but how long it will take"

"His stock is rising, it has to be said. He oozes confidence and it's not unfounded either"

"Only just turned 19, I think Some people still refuse to believe that he is that young, massive matches all year and always, always delivers"

No. 1: El Ligero

He's done it again. Appearing in the UKFF UK50 all 8 years it has been running. Ranked in the Top 10 for 6 consecutive years. Ranked in the Top 5 for 5 consecutive years. Now, one of the busiest, hard working wrestlers on the circuit is a 2-time UKFF UK50 winner. Though more voters actually included Noam Dar on their ballots, and more voters chose Zack Sabre Jr as their individual number one, the balance all the overall position sees Ligero as the runaway winner by a wide margin. Hailing from Los Sancho, erm, Leeds, the masked Ligero is a popular fixture across the land, and there is hardly a wrestling organisation in the UK that hasn't featured him at some point. So, what has he been up to to earn such plaudits? Let's take a look...

In the north-west, Ligero began the UKFF UK50 eligibility period as the reigning British Flyweight Champion. He had stood in for Declan O'Connor as he and Joey Hayes faced the

in Morecambe, then retained his belt in a 3-way over 'Serious' CJ Banks and GPW wrestler Ricky J McKenzie at 'Last Fight at the Prom'. He would begin 2012, however, by losing the belt to rookie Jynkz in an excellent, slow-burn story-driven bout at 'Goldrush', and participated in a fabulous 6-way at 'War on the Shore VIII' with Jynkz, Nathan Cruz, Rockstar Spud, Dave Rayne and eventual winner Joey Hayes. In PCW, his opponents included Prince Mohmed Ameen and Noam Dar, before being part of multi-way encounters at 'Festive Fury' in December and 'Springslam' in March. This would pale, however, to his
. A legitimate British match-of-the-year candidate, the pair engaged in breath-taking high-octane combat before Ligero secured the win. The rematch is already set for February 2013...

In nearby Wigan for GPW, Ligero faced Bruce Sheila in an entertaining bout in November, Cyanide in a brilliant battle in March and Andy Wild in an excellent mat-based human chess match in May. His main 2012 storyline, however, has seen the emergence of the mysterious masked El Oscuro as a new arch rival, with the pair involving themselves in each other's matches and brawling at every opportunity, building all year towards their first official in-ring encounter. The El Oscuro feud is similar to that Ligero faces in Southside Wrestling Entertainment, where

. The enemies met in the ring as part of a tag team match in November, then in singles in April 2012. A rematch in May ended in a wild double count-out, before EGO beat Ligero in a Street Fight in June. The story is set to be taken to the next stage when Ligero and EGO Dragon meet in a no-ropes, no-rules mask vs. mask bout to headline SWE's 2nd Anniversary show soon...

Across in Hull, Ligero

, with the duo beating Bam Bam Barton & SC Supreme, then Jack Gallagher & Scott Adams, then finally The Predators in a tournament to crown brand new NGW Tag Team Champions. They went on to defend against the Bhangra Knights, Team GB and Cruz Enterprises, the latter bout the catalyst for Nathan Cruz and Colossus finally splitting. Other honours around Ligero's waist this year have included the West Midlands-based PPW Title and the County Durham-orientated NEWS British Championship. Ligs was also picked by the returning Real Deal Wrestling group to face former ECW, NWA, AWA and 1PW World Heavweight Champion Steve Corino for a bout in March, and has been a feature for
, including a bout with
.

Ligero is also a regular up in Scotland for Pro Wrestling Elite and Premier British Wrestling in addition to being an almost full-time touring performer for the most active promotion in the UK, All Star Wrestling, appearing in town hall venues and holiday camps, usually against bitter rival 'Showstealer' Nathan Cruz. Another long-term enemy has been Martin Kirby, the pair continuing their career-long series in SWE, NEWS and 3CW. Ligero has also started making more appearances in the south-east, featuring at London's 'BritWresFest 2012' in April against Cruz and Rampage Brown, then as a regular part of THIS IS PROGRESS, also in the capital. On their first show,

to a 4-way later that night for the first TIP Championship, but was eliminated as eventual winner Cruz and Marty Scurll battled on for the prize. He won a 3-way over Greg Burridge and RJ Singh on the 2nd show in June to become number one contender to the title, but when his involvement in the main event rematch between Cruz and Scurll backfired and allowed Cruz to retain, he didn't seem too fussed. This led to Ligero and Cruz teaming on the third show, but the weak union didn't hold and the two came to blows, setting up Ligs' main event title match for the upcoming 4th show.

What did the UKFF think?

"Never has a bad match whether its a big guy or a small guy like him. His fued with Ego Dragon is hotting up nicely"

"Fantastic character! He's been on the UK scene for so long and wrestles so often, but still manages to bring something unique, interesting and those defining jaw dropping moments that a show needs! "

"Remains the hardest working wrestler on the UK circuit in my opinion. There was a great quote I once read about Bono where it said "Bono is the biggest rock star in the world because he wants to be", and that is a good description of Ligs, dedicated to the fullest to being the best. Great physique, great gimmick, great work rate"

"Best in the country for me. Anyone that can control a crowd without showing their face is astounding to me"

"Surprised many by his position as number 1 last year, he was always good but was he really that good? Since then he has gone on to prove he was a worthy pick for last years top spot. His outstanding moment was his epic with Tozowa which will almost certainly go down as the best match of PCW
