2012 UKFF UK50 - RESULTS THREAD

Big Benny HG

Last time I saw Val Kabious was at Preston early in the year, he has improved but still doesn't warrant a place in the Top 50 , doesn't seem as though any of the top promotions in the UK are booking him anymore , he keeps ending up on the bog standard cards around the country , probably due to be associated with UKW!

He certainly has the look - incredibly muscle bound - but character, charisma call it what you will, is non-existent for me. But in a way that's no bad thing heading where he's heading because he's a blank canvas.

I do struggle sometimes though to see the x factor in potential wwe stars of the future that Drew sees. But then I'm not a pro-wrestler with nearly thirty years in the business am I.

No. 10: Dave Mastiff

Score: 207 points

Total 1st place rankings in 2012 votes: 1

Percentage of 2012 ballots including Dave Mastiff: 45.6%

Dudley's 'Human Hate Machine' achieves his 4th consecutive Top 10 finish, though drops 7 places this year. In making the UKFF UK50 this year, 'Big Bad Dave' becomes one of only 5 people to have appeared in the UKFF UK50 in each of the 8 years it has been running. Also known as 'The Bastard', has continued to appear in all corners of the country and on mainland Europe, where he held the singles championship for Belgium's BCC promotion and recently added Germany's ACW belt to his collection.

In IPW:UK down in Kent, Mastiff has been at the top of the cards as one of the lead babyfaces, feuding with the stable of Rockstar Spud, T-Bone and the man who beat Dave for the British Title earlier in 2011, Sha Samuels. Mastiff and The Lion Kid beat Samuels and Spud in the main event of 'Summer Sizzler 2011' last July, before Dave won a 4-way outright war over T-Bone, Jon Ryan and Terry Frazier at the '7th Anniversary Show' in November to earn a crack at Sha's belt. That shot was teased for later that night as Sha retained against The Lion Kid, then said he wanted Mastiff there and then. Mastiff's music hit.... the fans jumped up in anticipation.... only for it to be Spud that emerged in a fat suit. Somewhat narked, the real Dave turned up to raise hell, only to be beaten down by Samuels, Spud and T-Bone.

Mastiff's real title chance came in the first show of 2012, 'No Escape' in February. There, interference from 'Bone and particularly Spud, who decided the match with a title belt shot, allowed Samuels to beat Dave and keep the belt. This built up to a 3 vs. 3 elimination tag match at IPW:UK's 'supershow' at the Troxy in the London Docklands, where Mastiff, Martin Stone & Terry Frazier took on Samuels, Spud and T-Bone. After failing to get his hands on him for the entire match, the bout came down to Mastiff finally cornering Spud, getting a measure of revenge by destroying him for the win. The next show was the return of the 'Extreme Measures' tournament for the first time in 3 years. Mastiff beat T-Bone in the first round to qualify for the 4-way elimination final, but this was the beginning of a new feud as Dave eliminated 'Heavyweight House of Pain' Stixx, only for Stixx to return and attack Dave with his chain, leading to Dave's exit from the bout (eventually won by Marty Scurll over Akira Tozawa)...

Preston City Wrestling has seen Dave fall to IPW:UK rival T-Bone in the inaugural Heavyweight Title tournament in August 2011, only to return with a win over Dean Allmark that December. Appearances since then have included a loss to Noam Dar, then excellent bouts with Kris Travis and El Ligero. Mastiff's opponents at his local Fight Club:Pro shows have included wXw's Big Van Walter, Dan Ryder, Lee Hunter, Bobby Barratt, Trent Seven, Clint Margera, Jonathan Gresham, CZW owner DJ Hyde and Chris Brookes. He also engaged in a couple of matches with US indy star Sami Callighan twice in the same day in March, losing to the 'Callihan Death Machine' on a

, before evening the score at FCP later on. Both were very highly-regarded encounters.

In big Heavyweight Championship singles matches, Dave unsuccessfully challenged T-Bone in SWE, Martin Kirby in GPW, Nok Su Kau in ACW and Rampage Brown in NGW. The big, bad, surly heavyweight destroying machine also has an awesome-looking match with Eugene coming up this December for PCW...

What did the UKFF think?

"Since he got back from OVW Mastiff has been immense. Deserves a break overseas"

"This guy is complete wrestler who can make any opponent look good in the ring"

No. 9: Stixx

Score: 220 points

Total 1st place rankings in 2012 votes: 4

Percentage of 2012 ballots including Stixx: 40.4%

(2011=6th, 2010=12th, 2009=22nd, 2008=14th, 2007=30th, 2006=26th, 2005=50th)

stixx1.jpg

Nottingham native and House of Pain head, the 'Heavyweight House of Pain' Stixx is another of the 5 to have made it into the prestigious ranks of the UKFF UK50 every single year. In 2012, he falls 3 places but retains his second Top 10 finish. As well as appearing in SWE, XWA, NGW, PBW, RDW, IPW:UK, FWA and more, the 2012 eligibility season has also found Stixx featuring in Italy, Germany and Holland.

In Southside, Stixx beat Colossus Kennedy for the now-defunct Dynamic Pro Wrestling title in October 2011, then

, turning heel in the process. He then rose to become
as he led his House of Pain team into war against the Southsiders. The Nottingham man beat Doug Williams, Joel Redman and Rampage Brown in a February 4-way to officially become the number one contender to the promotion's Heavyweight Title, but failed to unseat champion T-Bone in the main event of the April Huntingdon event. Matches since then have included wins
and conflicted House of Pain wrestler Max Angelus
before, after the end of the 2012 eligibility period, he beat Davey Richards on the first night of an August double-header, following up by beating Mark Haskins in a crazy, wild and heated main event to win the vacated SWE Heavyweight Championship.

Over at Hull's New Generation Wrestling, Stixx scored wins over Colossus Kennedy and then Martin Kirby, then won

which headlined the 'Destiny' show in March 2012. In doing so, Stixx earned a shot at the Heavyweight Title, which would find its way around the waist of Rampage Brown. Stixx failed to unseat Brown in the main event contest of NGW's '4th Anniversary Show' in June.

Stixx is somewhat of a Rumble specialist, since as well as the NGW win, he also finally eliminated Joey Hayes to win XWA's annual 'Goldrush', the second consecutive year he came out on top of that particular event. This set up a babyface vs. babyface title showdown with XWA British Heavyweight Champion Johnny Phere, taking place as the feature contest of 'War on the Shore VIII' in May. That night, the two heavyweights went toe-to-toe in an evenly and fairly fought match, until invading GPW wrestlers and staff forced the bout to be ruled a no-contest, the second year that Stixx had won the 'Goldrush', only to be cheated out of the gold itself in his subsequent title shot (he had beaten stand-in champ David Deville by DQ the previous year, so didn't take the strap). As a result of this, Stixx was one of the key members of Team XWA at 'XWA vs. GPW: Vendetta' in July. Stixx beat 'Dangerous' Damon Leigh in his singles match to earn the points for his team, but was taken out by Team GPW afterwards, was supposedly taken to hospital for the resulting injury, and failed to return for the deciding 4 vs. 4 elimination match main event. It was key - GPW defeated XWA and sent the promotion into exile when promoter Greg Lambert couldn't take the loss.

Elsewhere, Stixx faced The Lion Kid for THIS IS PROGRESS Wrestling, challenged PBW Tag Team Champions Wolfgang & Lionheart in Greenock and PBW Heavyweight Champion BT Gunn in Glasgow, faced former WWE superstar Chris Masters at IPW:UK 'Revolution' in London and went to the final of the IPW:UK 'Extreme Measures' Tournament in Sittingbourne by beating Dean Allmark, then setting up a situation with Dave Mastiff.

What did the UKFF think?

"The model of a true pro. Seems to be pushing for more of a main event role in the Brit scene rather than just dependible veteran. Can get really good audience involvement in his promos- reminds me of the UK's Arn Anderson"

"A great big man who seems ok as a heel or face. Cant believe this guy was once Darksides lacky ?"

"Always fantastic to watch, really enjoyed what he's been doing in southside"

"One of the best big guy's in the counrty has great matches when ive seen him"

"Should be on WWE/TNA by now just great worker and has the look"

"athletic big man, having only seen one live match in person I'm not able to rank him nearly as high as I once did"

"The only dissapointing thing with Stixx is that I don't seem to see him about much! There's a few matches I'd love to see at some point on the UK and he'd be in a couple of them, becuase he's so good at working with anybody in any type of match. For example saw him against Colossus Kennedy and El Ligero this year and they were both up there for MOTN"

"One of the very best big men in the company. You can tell he loves being in the ring. Best he;s ever been right now and just keeps getting better and better"

"one of the few heavyweights to really have a good year, though efforts to push him as a heel in Southside were particularly baffling in Nottingham at the shows in Gym Combat, where half the crowd were House of Pain regulars... Match with Chris Masters at IPW:UK in London worked very well... Underrated, as he doesn't do anything particularly spectacular"

"Has been great for so many years now, but hasn't been given the opportunities he deserves yet. A great coach too by the merits of his students who can be seen working around the country now"

"Best big man in the Uk and one of the best in Europe"

"A mainstay of UK wrestling now for the last few years. Someone who looks the part and carries himself like a wrestler. Matches with Rampage have been hard hitting and realistic and his match with Colossus Kennedy for NGW was a great example of how a match can be made to seem "big time" and have that aura through the persona of the combatants"

"his matches this year have been second to none, match with Chris Masters at the TROXY earlier in the year for IPW was fantastic and his match a few weeks ago at NGW with Nathan Cruz was a definite contender for match of the year"

Am I the only person that thinks Noam Dar is gash?

I like him and always enjoy seeing him but I do see him as "Zack lite" but just a bit more camp.

Still knocks 10 shades of shit off most people mind and is a joy to watch.

I took my wife to a local show recently and she (whose never been to a live event before) thought that Dar was the worst on the card. I asked her why and she simply said, he had no character, just a stuck up twat, but not the kind of twat you wanna watch wrestle, the kind of twat you'd rather just leave the venue with no pay.....which if rumours are true wouldn't be the first time that's happened either....

I Despise him, and imo AJ Styles could make anyone look good!

He's everything that is wrong with BritWres

Thats good though, he's a heel, you are not meant to like him. I've never understood why people say I don't like said wrestler he shouldnt be on the show. If the wrestler in question is making you dislike them that means they are doing their job properly, well, if they are playing a heel of course!

There is a big difference between hating someone and wanting to see them get beat up (good heat), and hating them and just wanting them to go away (bad heat).

Not to the other people in the crowd there isn't. Only the person themselves knows. Hence, the wrestler will keep doing whatever gets the reaction.

There's also a difference between those things, and hating someone for some other reason, like the kind of reasons that extend to posting bullshit "rumours" that get shot down in quick order.

Any reaction is better then no reaction

No it's not, if the general reaction in the crowd is "Man, I hate these wrestlers and do not want to see them", then that's obviously bad business.

Given the number of genuine number of sell out shows Noam Dar has been on, I'm going to guess that this isn't the case with him.

People that talk about "good heat" and "bad heat" are usually just talking bollocks anyway. It usually just means "heels I like get good heat" (which is an oxymoron) and "heels I don't like get bad heat."

No. 8: Mad Man Manson

Irish funnyman Mad Man Manson makes it into the UKFF UK50 for the 6th consecutive year, breaking the Top 10 and earning his highest ever ranking.

, Manson secured the support of more than half the voters during the scoring stage.

Manson's antics in Preston City Wrestling, where he

and formed the
, were covered in full in both Rayne's write-up at #23 and Bailey's at #35. He also featured on the home team for a 6 vs. 6 PCW vs. PBW tag battle, appeared in the 30-man rumble and received 2 consecutive cracks at the new PCW Tag Team Titles.

Elsewhere, Manson

in Southside Wrestling Entertainment, leading to the Mad Man beating Kraze in a 'Loser Leaves Town' match at the promotion's first anniversary event in St Neots, Cambridgeshire, last November. Since then, he has tangled with Rockstar Spud, Prince Mohmed Ameen and House of Pain wrestlers Dave Breaks,
, Paul Malen and SC Supreme. In addition to this, he appeared for West Midlands-based
, locking horns with Lord Graham Thomas and Steve Valentino in singles matches over the first 2 nights, before joining El Ligero & Jonny Storm to down Thomas, Matt Pedin & Brian Wright in a trios bout on the final date.

Other individual appearances have included a returning guest role in

in February, a bout with Justin Thorne in the 6-sided ring of Newcastle's CRW and a much-requested hi-jinks-filled bout in Nottinghamshire with Dragon Gate's GAMMA on the
. Manson and Martin Kirby also formed an odd couple championship team for West Yorkshire's Dynamic Pro Wrestling, adding a successful defence against Conners & Malen in October 2011, before that promotion closed its doors. He even appeared on Adam Bowler's notorious 'Mental Mayhem' event in Leeds...

What did the UKFF think?

"great entertainer, gets great reactions everywhere he goes"

"Has their ever been a more creative wrestler than Manson? He seems to find it effortless to make me laugh every time he enters the ring. Watched him at a show last year, and he was so effective in the role he plays subsequent matches tried to follow suit, and came up very short"

"What can I say that everyone else won't? Best comedy wrestling act in europe for me"

"Easily the best comedy wrestler in the UK and probably one of the best in the world despite the bigger names who would claim that title. Manson always gets a great reaction wherever he goes and never fails to get the laughs he’s after. If Spud is the best at ‘working’ the crowd, Manson is the best at simply entertaining them. He’s never going to give you a 5 star match, but that’s never his intention, and if he did that would probably spoil the gimmick as he take the ‘Mad Man’ gimmick all the way. Manson is a real one of a kind and he bring a much welcomed variety and change of pace to any show he features on"

"Funniest Man in wrestling, it's just not the same without him"

"Always fun and breaks up a card well with his antics"

"Just a lot of fun"

"Still just as funny as ever"

"If the art of Wrestling is getting through a match without getting hurt, this man is Picasso"

"Well what can be said about the guy other than he is a pure all-round entertainer. As with the link I posted in the PPW topic, in the face of adversity he was able to work something out of a venue with a low roof and wrestled on his knees, this still worked well and provided great entertainment for the people in attendance"

"the most fun you can have on a show, inside and outside of the ring"

"Great performer. Loved by everybody. Adds something completely different to a card"

"Can sometimes border on the exposing line of humour a bit too much, but when he gets it right there isn't anyone funnier in wrestling. Perfect escapism"

"Still hilarious, inventive and honestly entertaining in all aspects of his wrestling"

"Comedy genius"

"So funny"

"As entertaining as they get, gets a huge reaction from every crowd, from 6 people to hundreds. Makes wrestling great fun and always provides something different to the rest of the show. At his best with a straight man to play off, the guys just so good and getting the fans to care. Bloody nice bloke too, but that's a massive aside"

"Comedy wrestling at its very best, but when he actually needs to start performing, he can match the laughs"

"comedy genius, but for all his talk about being terrible, he is a quite accomplished wrestler"

"In terms of comedy in UK wrestling Manson has the market sewn up, and many times this year he has stolen the match of the night honours simply by entertaining the fans the most. Knows the difference between providing something for the fan and also something for the smart crowd too"

"without Manson no show is complete, his matches may always be similar but they are ALWAYS entertaining!!"

"The Funniest Wrestler in Wrestling, can go with anyone and can actually work should he choose, but from video promos to the 3 way nipple clamp, to audibly calling spots in a way that makes things hilarious, this guy deserves his spot amongst the UK's best workers"

"Comedy gold, pure genius"

No. 7: Martin Kirby

Score: 242 points

Total 1st place rankings in 2012 votes: 3

Percentage of 2012 ballots including Martin Kirby: 52.6%

(2011=7th, 2010=9th, 2009=10th, 2008=15th, 2007=NL, 2006=NL, 2005=NL)

kirby1j.jpg

Martin Kirby secures votes from the majority of those that took part in Stage Three, resulting in him equalling his ranking of last year and meaning that he has now finished in the Top 10 in 4 of the 5 years in which he has appear in the UKFF UK50. Hailing from the sleepy market town of Thirsk, North Yorkshire, Kirby is one of the busiest of all the wrestlers in the UK50, featuring for literally dozens of promotions up and down the land over the course of the 2012 eligibility period. He has appeared and won championship gold both as a singles star and as part of the 'Project Ego' tag team with Kris Travis, appearing as both a heroic babyface and a daft cowardly heel.

As Project Ego, Kirby and Travis were in the mix for tag belts in multiple promotions. They beat CJ Banks and Spud at NGW's '3rd Anniversary Show' to advance to the semi-finals of the Hull-based promotion's Tag Team Title tournament. They then made their debut for Kent's IPW:UK (as a team, that is) at 'Summer Sizzler 2011', where they defeated the makeshift team of Jon Ryan and Shinya Ishikawa to announce their intentions for that organisation's tag straps too. The NGW attempt came to an end at 'Revelations' in September 2011, knocked out of the tourney by The Predators (Paul Malen & Joseph Conners). Back in IPW:UK, though, Kirby and Travis beat The Tempest Warriors (4FW's Jason Larusso & The Saint) and The Thrillers (Mark Haskins & Joel Redman) in November and February respectively to advance their standing in the tag division. This effectively set them up as the top duo in the promotion, while British Tag Team Champions the LDRS were on the shelf with Zack Sabre Jr staying on tour in Japan with Pro Wrestling NOAH and Marty Scurll pushed as the singles star.

At 'Revolution 2012' in April, Kirby and Travis were entered as separate participants in a 6-way Ladder Match for a 'Money in the Bank'-style title shot of their choosing. Though it was every-man-for-themselves, Kirby assisted Travis in snatching the briefcase to beat 'M-Dogg' Matt Cross, Noam Dar, The Lion Kid and Leon Britannico. Project Ego lost a measure of momentum when they were defeated by The Hooligans (Roy 'Zebra Kid' & Zak 'Zodiac' Knight) at 'Extreme Measures' in June, but evened the score with victory in their rematch at 'Summer Sizzler 2012', after the end of the 2012 UKFF UK50 eligibility season, the same night that the Sittingbourne-based IPW:UK shows were rebranded under the Revolution Pro Wrestling banner. Later that evening, however, following Scurll's defeat to Heavyweight Champion Sha Samuels and beatdown at the hands of bitter rival Rockstar Spud, Travis cashed in his briefcase on behalf of Project Ego and Kirby and Travis quickly beat Scurll and Sabre Jr to win the British Tag Team Championship. While all of this had been going on, over in SWE, Project Ego had beaten The Predators

, but lost out in a rematch between the teams when the promotion's vacant Tag Team Titles were decided at 'Retribution III' 2 months later. Other Project Ego matches have included appearances for Pro Wrestling Elite, Premier British Wrestling and Infinite Promotions.

In singles competition, heel Kirby reigned as the 3CW Triple Crown Champion (comprising the unified Heavyweight, British and Lord of the Ring titles) for the entire eligibility period, having dethroned El Ligero earlier in 2011 and retaining the strap while the Teesside promotion scaled back on running shows. Kirby also entered the summer of 2011 holding Grand Pro Wrestling's own version of the 'Money in the Bank', having won it in the very first GPW match of the 2012 calendar year. As one of the top babyfaces for the Wigan group, Martin was involved in a long-running feud with The Masterplan which, in turn, manifested itself into a singles feud with MP member Bubblegum towards the end of the year. After their situation escalated in multiman bouts in October and November, Kirby and Bubblegum settled their issue in a December contest in which Martin put up his 'Money in the Bank' shot against the dastardly Bubblegum's hair. Kirby won an entertaining bout, but was beaten down by The Masterplan afterwards, who ended up shaving his hair. About time. The Masterplan would have more reason to celebrate their evil schemes later on that night when leader Dirk Feelgood defeated Damon Leigh in the main event to win the GPW Heavyweight Championship. That wouldn't be the end of things, though, as a bald-headed Kirby emerged just as fans started to get up to leave, revealing that he was cashing in his shot there and then, and defeated Feelgood in a quick bout to bring 2011 to an end by taking the championship belt. In 2012, Kirby has kept the belt by defending against Big Bad Dave Mastiff and CJ Banks in singles matches, then over Feelgood, Jack Gallagher and Cyanide in a superb 'High Stakes' 4-way main event at 'Battlefield II' in June, with each man putting something on the line and ending with Kirby pinning Feelgood to send Dr Dirk packing from GPW and, indeed, the UK.

In PCW, Kirby teamed with Nathan Cruz to face Team SHAG (Greg Burridge & Colt Cabana) on the debut show in August 2011, appeared in 6-way multi-mans at 'PCW vs. PBW',

and 'One But Not Forgotten', and had singles matches with Lionheart and Rockstar Spud. He faced international guest stars El Generico for CRW in Newcastle,
, Dave 'Fit' Finlay and
in top matches for SWE and Dragon Gate wrestlers in a 3-way tag bout last October when he made his DG:UK debut. He also continued his career-long rivalry with El Ligero, with the pair squaring off in battle this year for SWE, NEWS, PWE, 3CW and probably more in various stipulation encounters. He left NGW after a stipulation loss to Caz Crash, appeared for W3L in Scotland and recently made his 'official' FutureShock Wrestling debut as part of the annual FutureShock Trophy tournament.

What did the UKFF think?

"Project EGO have been consistantly entertaining and Travis is arguably the more gifted, but Kirby is a talent as well and since he shaved his head to remove the bald patch he seems more credible"

"Seen this guy more than anyone this year and his work rate is always 100% whether he is start of show or main event McGuinness/Finlay"

"Fantastic matches this year whenever i've seen him especially in his work with Finlay and Mcguinness"

"Massively underated wrestler. I can only say good things about him"

"The brains of the best team in the UK by none, Project Ego. Has transformed his body to now rival that of his tag partner"

"Didn't rate him as much as some in the past, but really warmed to him and he probably got better for me each time of seeing him this past year. The Finlay match was a cracker at Southside and he really adapted well to Finlay's unusual style of match. Since then seen him in two or three really good matches"

"Gpw champion, displayed a more menacing side this year with his skinhead looks, hopefully turns heel at some point the idea of kirby as a chickenshit heel gpw champion would be all kinds of awesome!"

"Current GPW Heavyweight Champion, though in the qualifying period I only saw one Kirby match live in that role, against Dave Mastiff in February 2012. Has been the star of Southside Wrestling in more ways than one, with massive matches against Nigel McGuinness and Finlay, the former of which I saw live, and he also impressed in four way action in St Neots in March. Regular tag team with Kris Travis has been a riot in IPW:UK, with Project Ego almost single handedly keeping the tag division alive while the LDRS held the belts, duw to Zack's tours of Japan"

"Fantasic worker,I have really enjoyed his work in Southside, especially his match with Finlay"

"This could have been Kirby's best year to date. Stellar matches. He never really stands out and steals the show, but he's always there and always performing well. Vastly underrated in my opinion, but hopefully that changes"

"kind of the forgotten member of project ego at PCW, he shows what he can do solo as the GPW champion whilst Project Ego are possibly the top tag team in Scotland!"

"Solid performer and their is a reason he gets booked all over the country"

"He's a bit overshadowed by his tag team partner, but I think he plays his part well. He always seems a bit unhinged to me which adds an air of unpredictability"

"Massively underrated is Kirby, can work heel or face, now has a bad ass haircut to boot. Doesn't always get the recognition he deserves, but is well worth seeking out as always delivers"
