Hopefully not too many of their players walk way and they end up in the 1st division. There's a fine line between punishing Rangers for what they did and destroying Scottish football in order to prove a point.

What? Why would they ever go into the first division? Now that they're not going to be in the SPL, you want some kind of cushion to support the financial aspect of the clubs who voted them out? It doesn't work like that - you start at the bottom. The SPL is a separate entity; the SFL is three divisions of one entity. It's either bottom of the breakaway or bottom of the leagues altogether.

"Rangers" starting in the third division isn't a punishment for their actions, it's a consequence of them.

Quite. The punishments haven't really started yet. They took their ten point hit, but there's still the replacement for the transfer embargo to deal with, the question of double contracts and illegal player registrations and of course, criminal proceedings against various people for the Whyte takeover. I would hope that when the liquidators get in about things, they'll pursue criminal actions against the original tax-cheating board too. MIH must have enough assets to pay off the Rangers debt to the Exchequer too.

Yet you were so fed up at the prospect of them being accommodated into the first division just a couple of days ago, you were close to saying fuck scottish football altogether.

That's some about-turn.

I wonder how many of the 'wee clubs' will be making this exact same about turn in the next few weeks. I hope not for the sake of the integrity of the league, but there's every chance that panic might set in.

None. The Division One idea is a non-starter. The only way it could be done without rewriting the rules would be for them to get into the SPL then get relegated as punishment for the double contracts. As it stands, it's Division Three or nothing. And nothing looks increasingly likely.

They would be best off just speaking to the English FA about the possibility of being allowed into the Conference North or such similar. There are a few teams in England that are dangerously close to death so could always hope for a spot with a re-shuffle of the others. The revenue and interest in the Conference North wouldn't be any less than Scottish Division 3 and with the fanbase and stadium that The Rangers have they should be able to get a quick successive promotions with relatively little investment. Fleetwood Town and Crawley Town have both shown that for about

Surely the point of having non-league football at that level be regional is to make it more viable for fans to go to away games and boost gates. Conference North is big enough as it is without expecting Oxford City to travel to Glasgow.
