Paid Members Weezenal Posted December 10, 2010 Paid Members Posted December 10, 2010 So it's coming to the end of the year and I thought it might be good to see what everyone though of the films they saw this year. Having the Cineworld Unlimted card from January I have actually seen enough new films to tell if a film has been really good or if they where completely rubbish as a lot of the films have been really average. I will add more thoughts to my choices soon but thought I would post this now to see you're choices too. Make up any categories you like.  Best Films - Inception Kickass The Road Worlds Greatest Dad  Worst Film - Greenberg This was a Ben Stiller film about the character Greenberg who hasn't done much with his life whilst all his old friends around him had. It tried to be a bit arty and just didn't work too well. Also the music was annoying (by James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem who I am a fan of, just not his work on this film I guess.) It's one of the only films I was bored enough to nearly leave.  Best 3D Film  Jackass 3D - Some people will dislike this choice because they don't like Jackass or say that Avatar had better 3D. I like Jackass and thought that the 3D was some of the best 3D I have seen so far, it added great depth and the ideas worked well in 3D. Avatar's 3D was good but the film wasn't that great, and a lot longer than it should have been. Also this choice is probably more due to the fact I have seen films like Clash of the Titans and Alice in Wonderland which added the 3D effect after, and it looked pretty bad.  Most Uncomfortable Moment - The Killer Inside Me SPOILER - Highlight the black box to read When the guy repeatedly punches Jessica Alba's character in the face with no let off.   Biggest disappointments Alice in Wonderland 3D  Most Suprised by Hot Tub Time Machine Prince of Persia Both films by no means classics but having expected them to be bad both where quite entertaining.
ultimo the great Posted December 10, 2010 Posted December 10, 2010 Managed to see 77 films released at uk cinemas so far.  Should probably get around to seeing Machete, The Social Network, Breathless, Mic Macs, Toy Story 3, Scott Pilgrim, Due Date, The Kids Are All Right and Buried   Best 10 Films - Still Walking  A Prophet  Mother  How To Train Your Dragon  Four Lions  Revanche  Up in the Air  Tony  Despicable Me  Dogtooth  Mentions: Winter's Bone, Kick-Ass, I Love You Philip Morris, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, Black Dynamite  Worst 10 Films - Eccentricities of a Blonde-haired Girl Furry Vengeance Monsters Valhalla Rising Greenberg Robin Hood Whatever Works Legion Takeshis The House Of The Devil  Film That Made You Want to Kill Greenberg: Didn't think Baumbach could create characters more hateable than he achieved with Margot at the Wedding but he excelled himself with this.  Overated Film Monsters: Nothing comes close to this bunch of crap.  Most Uncomfortable Moment - A Serbian Film SPOILER - Highlight the black box to read New Born Porn. Really really not easily shocked but FUCK!   The Killer Inside Me SPOILER - Highlight the black box to read When the guy repeatedly punches Jessica Alba's character in the face with no let off. SPOILER - Highlight the black box to read Couldn't take it seriously after she'd flown comic book style into the wall from 5 yards away after a single punch to the stomach.   Biggest disappointments Alice In Wonderland: Love Burton, this is his worst film. Valhalla Rising: Unbloodybelievably dull The Killer Inside Me: Not sure it was supossed to be a comedy A Serious Man: Not bad but hugley overated  Most Suprised by Lymelife Everybody's Fine Up in the Air
Paid Members Bellenda Carlisle Posted December 11, 2010 Paid Members Posted December 11, 2010 Valhalla Rising: Unbloodybelievably dull  It's insane isn't it, I actually couldn't believe how dull it was while I was watching it.  My favourite film of the year is definitely Kick-Ass, definitely, I think it's perfect, it was amazing both times I saw it at the cinema and just as good when I watched it on DVD yesterday with a bunch of people who hadn't seen it.  Toy Story 3 was a shocker, I saw it with 2 other dudes, we wanted to see the expendables but it wasn't showing so we saw that instead, when the film ended one of us (not me) had tears in his eyes and me and the other dude where just like 'Fuck, was that film really that good? How is that even possible?' totally caught us by surprise how good that was.
aaron Posted December 11, 2010 Posted December 11, 2010 Kick-ass is so far ahead of every other film I watched in 2010. It's the only one I was tempted to actually watch again. Fun, stylish, dramatic... super cool film. Â Actually, I'm going to have to go watch it again. Off to blockbusters now to buy myself a pre-viewed DVD! Â Laters chaps.
Parkamarka Posted December 11, 2010 Posted December 11, 2010 Enter the Void is many heads and shoulders above anything else for my best film of the year. Just unlike anything I've ever seen before, a cinematic nightmare. Â I also enjoyed Still Walking, The Road, Bad Lieutenant, The Headless Woman and The Social Network. Worst film I saw all year was Mike Leigh's Another Year. As a director he's alright, but as a writer he's just horrifically overrated. I've never before wanted to punch as many characters that I was clearly supposed to like.
Mr. Seven Posted December 11, 2010 Posted December 11, 2010 Up In The Air is from 2009 is it not? It's shit either way.  BEST  Bad Lieutenant: Port Of Call New Orleans The Social Network Shutter Island Toy Story 3 Winter's Bone  WORST  Kick-Ass Green Zone Inception (although it's more the hysterical overreaction to the film that I have problems with, it's undeniably a very average film though)  The "it's good but boy it's got problems" award goes to Scott Pilgrim VS The World   Pretty average year for films all told.
Paid Members Bellenda Carlisle Posted December 11, 2010 Paid Members Posted December 11, 2010 Bad Lieutenant: Port Of Call New Orleans  Yeah! I'm such a fag for Nicolas Cage, I was so happy he made 2 great films this year.  And drive angry looks amazing too.
Merzbow Posted December 11, 2010 Posted December 11, 2010 Enter the Void is many heads and shoulders above anything else for my best film of the year. Just unlike anything I've ever seen before, a cinematic nightmare. Â I agree with this, awful acting and wooden dialogue aside it's the best viewing experience i've had in a long time. Â I'm finding it hard to single out many other films from this year as i seem to have been on a retro trip for most of it and not bothered with anything new in the slightest apart from Kick Ass and Scott Pilgrim which were both fun but nothing really special enough to be watched more than once. Â Dogtooth which has been mentioned is pretty awesome and a slight headfuck but i'm sure that's actually a 2009 release, isn't it?
ultimo the great Posted December 11, 2010 Posted December 11, 2010 Enter the Void is many heads and shoulders above anything else for my best film of the year. Just unlike anything I've ever seen before, a cinematic nightmare. I knew i forgot something, one for Biggest disappointments category for me. A pretentious, tedious light show. The only thing it's good for is an epilepsy test  Up In The Air is from 2009 is it not? It's shit either way. According to IMDb UK Release Date was 15.1.2010  Inception (although it's more the hysterical overreaction to the film that I have problems with, it's undeniably a very average film though) I think it's harsh putting it in with worst films, it is overated but i liked it more than i thought i would. My major problems with it being DiCaprio's performance and your so busy making sure your up to speed with what's happening that it doesn't really drag you in and make you care about anyone. Tom Hardy's great though.  Dogtooth which has been mentioned is pretty awesome and a slight headfuck but i'm sure that's actually a 2009 release, isn't it? According to IMDb UK Release Date was 23.4.2010  Takeshi's came out in japan 5 years ago.  I forgot to add Mary & Max to my list (partly due to watching it last year) and i'd probably have that at 3rd or 4th best of the year.  Favourite First Watches of The Year (Excluding the above and not in order)  Air Doll (2009) Brighton Rock (1947) Departures (2008) Drunken Angel (1948) Love Exposure (2008) Love Me No More (2008) Mean Streets (1973) Nil By Mouth (1997) Paprika (2006) Throne Of Blood (1957)  Mentions: Attack The Gas Station, Be Sure To Share, Blue Collar, Boy A, Branded to Kill, Delicatessen, The Foul King, Grave of the Fireflies, Inglourious Basterds, Joint Security Area, Night And The City, Noriko's Dinner Table, Police Story and Sin Nombre
The Natural Posted December 12, 2010 Posted December 12, 2010 Only seen three this year: Whip It. Kick-Ass and Four Lions. Really liked all three.
melina_mma Posted December 12, 2010 Posted December 12, 2010 Kick ass and inception for me. Iron man 2 was perhaps my biggest dissapointment, it wasnt a bad film but wasnt nowhere near as good as the first. Â Resident evil afterlife was my guilty pleasure
The Natural Posted December 12, 2010 Posted December 12, 2010 Forgot about Iron Man 2. I agree with the poster above that it's not a patch on the first.
aaron Posted December 12, 2010 Posted December 12, 2010 WORST Kick-Ass Inception  Blimey, what you not like about Kick-ass? For me, it should be romping this thread.  Inception however... that was shit. Half an idea, mainly ignored. What a let-down. The last few minutes completely killed the film, making me want to slap the writers for wasting my time.   Pretty average year for films all told.  Very much so. When it came to responding in this thread, it became clear that it's not been a great year for film.    Only seen three this year: Whip It. Kick-Ass and Four Lions. Really liked all three.  I fell asleep watching that and never got to finish it before my rental expired. I was getting into it.  I thought though that maybe it was just me as I loved a bit of Roller Derby back in '91 on Sky.   Four Lions and Dogtooth: I've been in half a mind to rent these. I guess I should? DogTooth sounded real interesting but the trailer I watched on Playstation Store made it look a bit cack?
