Gladstones Bitch
No Holds Barred was the book that gave me my knowledge of UFC history when I first got into MMA. It is a great read. The detail of the effort that went into UFC 1 is essential reading.  Just ordered it there, I'd not heard of it before and was after a book about MMA but only found autobiography's.  Cheers

Rey_Piste
Rhonda Rousey thinks the exact same thing as me that GSP is boring. http://youtu.be/3cM_mBhpCeY I think it is about finishing your opponent. It's about entertainment. It's not the Olympics. It's not about just coming home and bringing a medal, and just having hardware and getting the win.  It's about pulling more fans in, and being entertaining.  I think that fighters that just try to win by points and come away with a win are actually bad for the sport. If you never saw MMA before, and you walked in and you saw GSP and Koscheck, and all this jabbing out the whole time, it looks like a boring boxing match. And I don't think you gain any fans with a fight like that.  And so I really hope that Nick Diaz beats the crap out of him, because Nick Diaz is entertaining, and he's an entertaining character in general. He might not be popular but I mean I can't but watch every video he puts out youtube. I think it's funny as Hell. And every single one of his fights is a brawl. It's not like a pitter pat match where afterwards he goes "Were friends, were all friends" and then okay let's go home. I think that's boring.  GSP was good for the sport for a while. He brought in some big sponsors like Gatorade and UnderArmor. But I think he's done everything he can in a positive way and he needs to step aside and let Nick Diaz kick his ass. Paid Members Dead Mike Posted January 26, 2012 Paid Members Share Posted January 26, 2012 We want da nockoutz!! JUST BLEED!!!!!!111 Â Fuck this silly cow...if she finds some elements of MMA boring she can go & watch pro-wrestling and leave this sport for people with an understanding & appreciation of the varying disciplines. Rey_Piste
But GSP constantly going for points wins is dull, The guys are paid in part to be entertainers, why do you think everyone is looking forward to Bisping vs Sonnen? Because Sonnenis great at hyping up his fights, but GSP is as dull as dirt. From both a promotion aspect and as a fighter now, he just does enough to not lose his belt, rather than finish guys when he has blatently had the chance to. Paid Members Dead Mike Posted January 26, 2012 Paid Members Share Posted January 26, 2012 That's a matter of opinion. I find Sonnen's constant bleating & trolling tired and predictable. You've got 3 ways to win a fight, going for a points win shouldn't be seen as dull. I'd much rather watch GSP execute a well thought out gameplan & beat a top flight opponent than see 2 blokes talk fabricated shit about one another in the vain hope it convinces morons that 'oooh, these guys really hate other' only to hug it out as soon as the bell rings. Wrestling's fake, lets not make MMA fake too. Â I was listening to Joe Rogans podcast a couple of weeks ago (the one where Everlast was a guest, worth a listen!) & he was talking about GSP saying how he's the fittest competitor in the organisation. His cardio is just on another level so he'll take guys into the late rounds & constantly talk shit to them when they're fighting to wind his opponent up make them struggle back to further wear them out, fully utilising his strengths. If you happen to find that boring so what? There'll be another fight on the card that finishes quick, not every game of football is 4-4 goalfest, sometime you'll get a 1-0 mid-field battle. Just depends on the best tactics for that opponent.
Paid Members wandshogun09 Posted January 26, 2012 Paid Members Share Posted January 26, 2012 I like Rousey but I've gotta say she's talking shite. GSP, whether you like him or not, is great for the sport. He's one of the most popular fighters in the game and an excellent ambassador for MMA who gives the sport a positive image. Dana White has said a few times that he's the UFC's biggest PPV draw. How can that be bad? Â Admittedly I've got a bit sick of the GSP overkill on the Primetime shows and stuff but that's not his fault, I just wanted to see other fighters get some of the spotlight which is happening with Diaz and Condit. I do feel like he's playing it safe and just doing enough to get by but really in the long run, that's smart. Maybe not the most flashy or entertaining but very smart. A lot of fighter's if they were in GSP's position would take the easiest, least risky route to victory. Why would he risk getting into wars and risk losing his title and some of his money. To please the fans yeah but no matter how many people complain about his style his PPVs do tremendous numbers. He's got no reason to change what he's doing. Â And at the end of his career he'll retire with a shitload of money and less physical damage. You can't blame him, it's up to his opponents to make a fight of it. If they can't it's tough shit. You don't want Fitch/Sonnen/GSP holding a guy down & doing enough to not get stood up then get up yourself. If you can't then you need better wrestling or BJJ to compete at their level. Rey_Piste
My fave fight of last year was Hendo/Rua, I don't expect every fight to end with a knockout or submission. I just find it frustrating to watch GSP grind out the wins, he could have finished Koschek in the third round, but he carried on tapping him for another 10 mimutes. I'm not knocking his ability, just his lack of motivation to actually finish a fucking fight for once.
Paid Members Egg Shen Posted January 26, 2012 Paid Members Share Posted January 26, 2012 Junior Assuncao has been released from the UFC after suffering a single loss that's harsh. Cos he was fecking boring and Dana and the powers that be hate boring or people who run awaywhich Junior basically did. yet, some people thought Junior beat Pearson. It's fucking stupid to criticise Junior for not standing in the pocket and trading with a superior kickboxer, the guy implemented a strategy (might not have been overly exciting) and it worked, i think it's harsh. Hyperion
Ronda Rousey trains with the Diaz brothers, so no big surprise she's trashed talked GSP, just rather she'd kept her trap shut.
Paid Members Bus Surfer Posted January 26, 2012 Paid Members Share Posted January 26, 2012 Rousey's comments are pretty silly, but she's not stupid. She's made it clear in the past she likes to stir the pot and create some interest (I Cant fault that, it makes more interesting fight) and training with Diaz recently is obviously part of this, but GSP is a great advert for the sport and he's quite right to continue what he's done upto now. It's the smart thing to do. I sympathize with Rey though, He does often look like he has no interest in finishing a fight and is without question my least favourite UFC champion to watch. Paid Members Egg Shen Posted January 26, 2012 Paid Members Share Posted January 26, 2012 Rousey just likes stirring the pot as Silky Kiss said. She's the best thing to happen in female MMA in years though, her fight against Meisha is the first female fight since Cyborg/Carano that i'm genuinely looking forward too. Paid Members Egg Shen Posted January 26, 2012 Paid Members Share Posted January 26, 2012 i know it's all about UFC on Fox this weekend but there's some other decent MMA/Kickboxing going on too, tomorrow night is MFC 32:   feel abit sorry for MFC, Mark Pavlich seems like a bit of a cunt (so much so that the promotion gets little 'net press) but he just can't seem to keep fighters, still they are battling on and i'll stick by it, card is decent too...  -Antonio McKee vs. Brian Cobb (Lightweight Title Fight) -Dwayne Lewis vs. Wilson Gouveia -Diego Bautista vs. Ryan McGillivray -Nathan Coy vs. Dhiego Lima -Jamie Toney vs. Kyle Jackson -James Haddad vs. Dan Ring -Matt Jelly vs. Garrett Nybakken -Brendan Kornberger vs. Allen Hope  then other than that, on Saturday Badr Hari is taking part in his final ever Kickboxing match against Gokhan Saki for It's Showtime.   shows on HDNet too so i'll be getting that shit, with the crumbling of K-1 ive missed me some quality kickboxing.
