We’ve all got it now bar my girl who has literally just been diagnosed type 1 diabetic this last weekend.

Sorry to hear pal, I’m type 1 myself so PM me if you need any advice!

Yeah. And you can always do the Prince 2 / BCS / Agile / whatever you need off your own back as well,  which will put you in an even stronger position when it comes to finding a new role to get you out of there.

Yeah I’ve actually been looking at self funding some of the courses myself. Funnily enough, my current place have told us all today that they’re happy to fund the APM Project Management Fundamentals course so that’s a positive.

@MPDTT Better annual leave at my current job (35 days vs. 30 at the new place), but the new place has perks like private health insurance, so there are pros and cons at both. I’m not a high tax rate payer either so you’ve raised a good point there.

I’m heavily leaning towards staying at my current job today, probably the closest I’ve been to making a decision so far. Mind you, we have a “management connect day” for three hours tomorrow, so I could have done a total 180 by 1pm.

  3. Thanks all, much appreciated. Annoyingly, you've all said the opposite to my girlfriend, so how do I tell her I'm likely to take the advice of UKFF over her?

  4. I'm currently in a bit of a frustrating job situation that I almost feel guilty complaining about but I'm curious on your thoughts.

My current job bores me to death. I'm a team leader but, due to the way my place is structured, I don't feel like I'm offering anything. I don't want to progress to manager there because it looks horrendous, and if I did want to it would only be an option if an existing manager were to leave or be promoted and a job becomes available, which has only happened twice in the 5 years I've been there. However, on the flip side, I have very little pressure on me, very little work to do, and I can comfortably pop out during working hours to go to the gym, get a haircut, pop to the shops etc.

I've recently been offered a new job with one of our competitors, ÂŁ3.5k pay rise, and it's a Junior Project Manager with plenty of professional qualifications so I can become a fully fledged Project Manager and hopefully fuck off out of this industry. Unlike my current place, they promote on appraisal rather than headcount, and I'm led to believe from somebody I know there that I'm likely to be promoted after a year unless I completely shit the bed. Seemed to be an easy decision when I was offered the role. The only thing that I was a little unsure about is that I know three former colleagues who started there this month - moved from the same job as me into the job I've been offered - but they were offered ÂŁ2k more.

However, the very day I was due to give my notice, my current place gave us all pay rises, ÂŁ3.5k more than the new job is offering, ÂŁ7k pay rise from what I'm currently on. Naturally, the first thing I did was ask new job to adjust my starting salary to ÂŁ2k more than the original offer so it at least matches my colleagues (I didn't mention my colleagues' salaries mind). Today they've come back and rejected that request and said the salary stands at the original offer. I'm quite annoyed by this because they've essentially said I'm worth ÂŁ2k less than people with the same experience (even far less experience in the case of one of them). To tell you the truth, I'm not even convinced the recruiter (internal, not an agency) even asked them to bump up the salary - it took her two weeks to come back to me with an answer (after promising 24-48 hours), and she only came back to me today after I stressed I needed an answer by Friday.

So yeah, bit of a pickle. Do I stick in my current job for more money but accept pure boredom and no drive, or do I take the new job for less money but likely a better future, albeit with the caveat that other new starters are being hired on more money for reasons unexplained to me?

Apologies for the self indulgent post, I know it's a good problem to have but it's driving me nuts.

  5. The lady and I are making dinner for the first time, and we’ve decided to splash out a bit and got a goose. The butcher ended up giving us a 6kg one instead of the 5kg we paid for too, so that’s decent. I’m fucking shitting it about overcooking it, but I’ve got a meat thermometer so that’ll hopefully keep us safe.

We’ve gone for a Gordon Ramsay recipe which uses Chinese five spice, sounds a bit strange but I’m optimistic.

    All prepped and ready!

Maybe picking this up wrong but would a company tell an unsuccessful candidate the reasons they weren’t successful?

Entirely depends on the company, and I wouldn’t expect it as standard, but this company in particular guaranteed an interview to anybody who declared a disability, which I did.

@mim731You are of course correct, but I’d prefer to wallow in my own self pity rather than think logically!

So I managed to find an email address for their hiring department and sent an email requesting further information on how this decision has been made, and today I’ve unexpectedly received a response asking if I’d like a call to discuss further. I’m not hopeful of being reconsidered, but I’m feeling a little more positive about at least discussing their decision.

Update: she didn’t call me and she’s now ignoring my emails. Wankers.

However, I’ve since re-read the email I sent them requesting clarification and I’ve spotted 3 typos, so I’m fully expecting the reasoning for not offering an interview to be “you can’t fucking spell, mate”.

  9. I’ve just been turned down for a job interview which guarantees an interview for all who declare a disability providing they meet the minimum criteria. I declared my disability, and I comfortably meet the minimum criteria and went into great detail for each point in my application, yet no interview.

Does anybody have any experience with this? It’s quite a large company so I have little hope of speaking to anybody about how this decision was made, but I’m not happy to just sit back and accept the decision without further clarification.

Thanks both. In this instance the role is with a very small company and it would appear all conversations will be held with the owner who advertised the role herself. As it’s not a particularly intensive job application, I’m tempted to apply and have the conversation if and when I’m invited to interview.

So I ended up applying for this and then found the same job advertised on a different website but with the salary listed - 3 days a week and ÂŁ19k less than what I make now.

I’m asking for the salary in advance next time.

Yeah, not advertising the salary is their way of paying as little as possible. Know your worth and don’t undervalue yourself.

To be honest, it would be a complete change of career for me and an entry level role, so I’m not expecting them to match what I’m currently on but I’d at least like a ball park beforehand.

But yeah, you’re right, I usually avoid adverts without a salary as it’s usually shit pay. In this instance it’s a career I’m really interested in which offers a fair amount of growth so I’m willing to hear their offer.

  13. What’s the best way of asking for a salary range for a position that hasn’t advertised the pay? I’m looking to get out of my job at the moment, and I’m fairly comfortable taking a pay cut just as long as I can still afford my mortgage etc.

I’ve always been discouraged to ask the salary beforehand which I think is fairly ridiculous.

  14. I’m surprised people think he’s going to turn up at AEW and do loads of spooky magic shit - all that rubbish absolutely stank of WWE and I’d be shocked if that wasn’t thrust upon him by such good shit man.

@Slapnuti'll be seeing Himalayas support the Manic Street Preachers tomorrow night, any good?

Yeah I’m a big fan, gutted I’m not going tomorrow. Check out Sigh on a Hurricane, it’s the first song of theirs I heard after stumbling upon it on a playlist a few years back, real good stuff.

  16. I’ve just realised that I totally missed the rearranged Himalayas gig I’ve had tickets for since before the pandemic. Never mind, at £8 a pop I’m not too out of pocket and I’m sure I’ll see them again.

Eagles of Death Metal at the Tramshed in Cardiff for me next. First gig since pre-Covid and I’m utterly shitting it to be honest.

  17. A friend and I were once invited into Harvey’s house at age 8 to watch Chubby Brown.

Who is Harvey, you ask? Well he’s on the sex offender’s register these days, so that’ll sum it up.

When I told my mam, she was more disgusted at the idea of me watching Chubby Brown than potentially being groomed by Harvey.
