You liked Premonition and didn't like Children Of Men? What the fuck?

I didn't like either, premonition only had me intruiged because it was so fucking confusing. Didn't like Children of Men as Sci-Fi type movies aren't my cup of tea I only watched it because it was on Sky anytime and I was rather bored.

Zodiac

My quest for film of 2007 begins here. This is a belter of a movie and a good place to start. You won't actually learn anything from this. There aren't any great plot twists but that isn't the point. The point is the story of a serial killer which is told very well.

I now have a two film list for the best of 2007.

Zodiac

The Last King of Scotland

Roll on the rest.

Well, you might if you can't be arsed to read Greysmith's Zodiac books, or you're not familiar with the zodiac case at hand :sneaky: Edited by Generator

My lack of caring will stop me from reading.

Rocky

Sly's best film, and the standout of the franchise, Rocky is unlike its brothers by being a great drama not a sports film. For someone who penned Rambo III, Rocky tells the story of a boxer in the slums of Phili so well and even relishes in the fact that the final result of the big fight is irrelevant - Rocky has succeeded in life and completed his goal (going the distance). The supporting cast of Burt Young as Paulie and Talia Shire as Adrian over-shadow Sly's acting, not that Stallone struggles. Out of any of his character, Rocky is clearly the one that Stallone feels the most comfortable in, this is clear from his performance.

However, the fact that it beat Taxi Driver for best picture is still something that many people will resent this picture for, till Stallone is 6 feet under.

A quick review of Transformers (2007). Might add more later...

A watchable if ultimately disappointing movie. It is seemingly aimed towards teenagers or younger (it has masturbation and urination jokes and a really bad hide-and-seek sequence around a house) and at times is more of a comedy than anything else (it feels like a poor American Pie style movie with robots!). The Autobot introduction scene is also cringe-worthy! It is too long at 140-minutes and while it has impressive effects and good action, the less said about the story and characters the better - in fact you are given little reason to care about any of the characters, human or robot.

Jon Voight and John Turturro are just going through the motions in the film, while Shia LaBeouf (someone to keep an eye on in the future) and Megan Fox do what they can with the poor script they are given to work with.

It is a Michael Bay movie so I shouldn't really have expected an in-depth story or complex characters, but outside of the effects and some good action there are not many other positives!

A timescale for the appearences of the main robots -

1-hour before Optimus Prime is first seen!

95-minutes before Megatron is seen and 105-minutes before he is defrosted!

2-hours before the Optimus Prime/Megaton battle!

Dodgeball

I remembered really loving this film the first time I saw it, so when I saw it was going to be on Film4 last night I decided to watch it. Sadly, it did not live up to my expectations as a classic comedy, which is how I remembered it.

Sure the central roles of Peter [Vince Vaughn] and White [ben Stiller] are played to perfection, but they are expected to carry the film over poor supporting roles, a linear and unimaginative plot, and some huge misses in the joke department. Infact, the funniest scenes are the ones involving Peter and White together, and you can almost imagine the two just ad-libing and going for it.

This film is always ranked up there with Zoolander and Anchorman, however having re-watched it I would go as far as saying its just a fairly average comedy. If you want to see a great sports comedy check-out Happy Gilmore.

Grindhouse

So British cinema's won't ever get this? Thats a real shame, because watching it on DVD conveys exactly how much fun this project must have been to make and watch on the big shame.

As nearly everyone will know, Grindhouse is split up into two sections: firstly Planet Terror, a zombie flick directed by Robert Rodriguez, then its Death Proof a hard to describe film by Tarantino. Plus in the deal you get a whole host of other goodies such as spoof trailers (directed by the likes of Roth, Zombie & Wright), old-school adverts, apologies for missing reels etc etc.

Planet Terror was the stronger of the two films. The tongue in cheek Zombie flick with some big names was a really fun hour and a half. Great performance, special effects, and a fairly water-tight script ensured that your enthralled for the whole ride, one minute groaning over a particularly nasty tongue infection and then pissing yourself laughing at a witty one-liner. Its a shame Death Proof doesn't live up to its predecessor. Sure its got a decent Tarantino script, and Kurt Russell is great in his role (not another screen time though), but its completely disjointed as a picture, the film's central character aren't introducded till 45 minutes in (in a 90 min pic), and as an audience you have no empathy or interest in these unlikable women. The films climax feels unclamatic and the picture suffers a result.

Grindhouse is a good fun project, and you will enjoy watching it (although it is 30 minutes too long), however I can't help but feel that Death Proof is Tarantino's weakest film and that the final 90 mins detract from the first.

I completely agree with you on both the grindhouse films, i think that Rodriguez got the balance right in terms of what a modern audience would accept from a b movie whilst QT disappeared up his own ass in parts of Deathproof. It's like QT used to rob cool stuff from other films to make his films cool but now he just assumes it'll be cool by association of his own name. However Kurt Russell is awesome.

Perhaps the other cut of Death Proof that will be released in September will work slightly better. Apparently the pundits loved it in Cannes (although I'm not sure which cut they watched).

Donnie BrascoI've recently been trying to watch as many gangster/crime films as I can.. I've been searching another Goodfellas/Departed/Casino/Scarface.I thought this one was OK.. its not something I'd watch again though. It had a good story but didnt really have anything to keep me glued to the screen.Al Pacino was probably the main reason I carried on watching.. because I fucking love the guy.Cant wait to watch Taxi Driver!

It's horribly overrated.

That depends, if you mean its not a really really good film then you are wrong. If you mean its not the greatest film in history then you are right. But hes still definitely in for a treat.
