In an ideal world Sami refusing to let go of Gunther would have meant Gunther also going backwards and off balance when Cody locked in the Cross Rhodes. Sami wouldn't have taken the full brunt of hitting the mat as Gunther would have broke his fall hence the need for a second Cross Rhodes and why he just had enough energy for a roll up. As it was I guess because of Gunthers height and size it just didn't come off right and instead made it look like he brained himself into the mat and that Cody lost a grip of Sami because he tried to be too flashy. In a non AI, decent writer universe there's ways always around a finish not going as well as it could be but continuing the story. In this university Brocks probably gonna eat Sami on SmackDown.
