I’m actually at the point where in a warped way I kind of admire the laziness of whoever’s making these. Could they give less of a shite? Honestly think my 5 year old niece could do a better job than this if you let her loose on photoshop. Even the font is like the most generic, basic shite. Genuinely looks like someone approached the graphics guy in the last 15 minutes of his shift that day and he just threw together any old shite. I get that the posters don’t really matter that much in the big picture but you see stuff like this, for an Apex card like this, and it all feels like part of the same overall ‘don’t care anymore’ vibe the UFC’s been giving off for a few years now. Card itself is pretty weak as well. I like the main event a lot, co-main and a couple of other bits and bobs could be good. This is gonna have to do until the real fun starts with 314 in Miami the week after. Josh Emmett vs Lerone Murphy then. This is too good for the Apex. These guys deserve better. We always complain about Apex main events being poor but when they actually put a good fight in there, you just think ‘this should be in front of a proper crowd’. The answer is to just stop doing shows at the bastard Apex! Keep it for TUF and DWCS and get the actual shows back on the road. It’s never gonna happen though, despite Dana saying a bunch of times, on camera, that they were gonna move away from the Apex. Lying bastard. Anyway, yeah, I like this fight. Emmett’s ranked #8, Murphy’s ranked #10. I don’t see either becoming a real problem in the Top 5 of the Featherweight division but hopefully this is a good fight. Emmett’s just turned 40 years old in March. Doubt he’s got many fights left in him at this stage. He’s been part of the furniture at Team Alpha Male forever. I checked his Wikipedia page to confirm and he’s listed as being with Alpha Male from 2006 right up to today! He must’ve been literally one of the first guys in that gym along with Urijah Faber back then. We all know what he’s about. Strong wrestler but later in his career he definitely became known more for his punching power. Over the years we’ve seen him brutally knock out Ricardo Lamas, Michael Johnson and Mirsad Bektic. He had that forgotten banger with Shane Burgos back in 2020. And in his last fight, he did this to some flat earth believing Hitler supporter… Yeah. He absolutely flattened Bryce Mitchell, who hit the deck with such speed and velocity that I can’t believe it didn’t change his mind that “gravity ain’t real”. Fucker was convulsing on the floor after that one. Scary KO. That’s the last time we saw Emmett though, and that was December 2023. Must’ve been injured because I can’t think why he’d wanna take so much time off at his age. Especially coming off a KO win like that. Surely you’d wanna build on that momentum and milk it for all its worth at this late stage in your career. He’d had a couple of losses before that win over Bryce. He lost to Ilia Topuria and Yair Rodriguez in back-to-back fights. So that basically tells you he hit his ceiling and that was before the layoff. Not sure how much he’s got left but that Bryce fight showed he’s definitely still got a whack on him. Murphy’s from Manchester, 33 years old and still undefeated at 15-0-1 with 7 of his wins coming by KO/TKO. Feels like it’s taken him forever to climb the ladder. He’s been on the UFC roster since 2019 and only just really making some progress. He had a couple of layoffs himself though which stalled him a bit. He had a good 2024 though. He beat Edson Barboza on points in their 5 round headliner in May. He had to show some heart in that one and survived a horrible upkick to come back and win clearly. Then in his last fight in October, he took a decision off Dan Ige in a good fight but, again, had to weather a storm and came back from being knocked down in the first round to win the second and third rounds. He actually called out Emmett after that win. He got his wish. Yeah, good fight this. Bit of a weird one in that I’m not sure what we’re getting out of Emmett coming off a big spell of inactivity at 40 years old. Plus he was likely injured for a chunk of that. But he’s still gonna be dangerous. And we’ve seen in Murphy’s last couple of fights, he can be vulnerable to getting a wallop at times. He admitted himself after getting dropped in the Ige fight, that he’s got stuff to work on and that he won’t be able to make mistakes like that against a big hitter like Emmett. The problem is, he’s 33 years old already. I’d get talking like that if he was 23 but how much improvement is he really gonna make at this point? You kind of are what you are as a fighter by 33. Fair play, he responded well to those shaky moments against both Barboza and Ige but you still don’t wanna be having those wobbles at all if you can avoid them. So on paper, it feels like Murphy should be winning this fight considering Emmett’s age, injuries and time out. But I don’t know. Murphy’s looked good but not spectacular and his last two fights haven’t got me feeling confident that he doesn’t get thumped at some stage. And we know what Emmett can do. Age and layoff aside, he’s a heavy puncher who’s not gonna be easy to take down and I’m not sure Murphy’s got the power himself to keep Emmett at bay. Interesting one and I wouldn’t say I’m confident either way but I’ve just got this feeling that Emmett clips him. Joanderson Brito vs Pat Sabatini is a solid co-main actually. I know it mightn’t scream co-main event names-wise but I’m fine with this for a Fight Night. I think Brito especially is an exciting fighter who deserves a bit more shine. He’s 30 years old, 17-4-1 with 15 inside the distance and he’s Chute Boxe affiliated. Always got a soft spot for those guys. He lost a split decision last time out against William Gomis on the Paris card in September. I can’t remember particularly enjoying that one but we’ll blame Gomis for that given both men’s track records. I do remember a lot of people disagreeing with the judging though, and the Paris crowd even booed their own man Gomis getting the decision, which says a lot. Before that Brito was on a 5 fight winning streak which included finishes over Andre Fili, Jonathan Pearce and Jack Shore. He also holds a 44 second KO win over Chepe Mariscal in LFA back in 2019 and even has a win over Diego Lopes on DWCS in 2021! Albeit by technical decision due to an eyepoke. I read it was a great fight though. Might have to give it a look. Sabatini I’m less fussed about but he’s alright. He’s 34 years old with a record of 19-5 with 14 finishes, mostly submissions, and he’s coming off a first round sub over Jonathan Pearce in October. Could be a fun one in the grappling but Brito should have the edge on the feet. Cortavious Romious vs Chang Ho Lee. Not a clue and it feels a bit odd this being so high up the card but whatever. I give up trying to make sense of how they decide on these bout orders. Especially on the Apex cards. Romious is 31 years old and 9-3 with 7 finishes. Made his UFC debut back in November and lost on points to Gaston Bolanos in what I vaguely recall being a pretty entertaining fight. And so it should’ve been considering Romious’ nickname is ‘Are You Not Entertained?’ Be false advertising if he was putting out duds, wouldn’t it? Barely remember Lee. He’s South Korean, 30 years old and 10-1. His Octagon debut came on the Saudi card in June, he beat Xiao Long by split decision to win the Road To UFC Bantamweight tournament final. Don’t remember it but looking at the thread for the card on here, I see I just described the fight as “awful” for what that’s worth. Let’s see if Romious can drag something entertaining out of this one. Gerald Meerschaert vs Brad Tavares is ***WAND’S ONE TO WATCH*** this time. Wasn’t exactly spoiled for choice, was I? This was probably the best of a mediocre bunch. Always got time for a Meerschaert fight and, win or lose, I genuinely can’t remember the last time he bored me. He’s 37 years old now and this’ll be his 56th pro MMA fight! And of his 55 fights so far, he’s somehow only gone to the scorecards 5 times, which is nuts really. All but 2 of his 37 wins have been finishes, 29 of them via submission. He’s no world beater and he’s never gonna be a title contender but the man does not play around. His last fight ended in defeat though. He welcomed Reinier De Ridder to the UFC back in November and ended up getting subbed himself in the third round of a really enjoyable fight. Gerald certainly had his moments but as strong a grappler as he is, De Ridder is next level and pretty much pulled rank on him, ending it by arm triangle in the third. Tavares is also 37 but at 20-10 has only had just over half the number of fights Meerschaert has. Crazy. Tavares is a tough bastard. He’s gone the distance with Yoel Romero, Israel Adesanya and Dricus Du Plessis! He’s in a slump now though, 1-4 in his last 5 with the only win being over a shot to bits Chris Weidman. Gotta favour our Gerald here. He’s got the grappling advantage plus, despite having more miles on the clock, he just seems to have more left in the tank at this stage. Could be a fun one. Two ageing, tough scrappers going at it. Ode Osbourne vs Luis Gurule. Dunno. Osbourne’s been in the UFC for years now and is clearly going nowhere. He’s not bad to watch and he’s been in some pretty entertaining fights but he’s kind of fallen into that role now as the guy the matchmakers feed to prospects or guys they actually have plans for. He’s lost 3 in a row now though so even that role on the roster might be coming to an end for him if he doesn’t win at least one soon. And true to form, the matchmakers are throwing him at another up and comer here. Gurule is undefeated at 10-0 with 6 finishes. He’s 31 already so doesn’t exactly have bags of time to develop but it’s clearly a piece of matchmaking along the lines of what I’ve been talking about. They’re trying to feed Osbourne to Gurule here. We’ll see if it works out that way. Torrez Finney vs Robert Valentin is currently slated to kick off the main card. Not sure what to expect. Haven’t actually seen Finney fight yet but he was all over my Twitter timeline at one point a few months back. Not sure if people are high on his actual skills and see some potential in him, or if it’s just his funny Scrappy Doo type build that makes him meme worthy. Looks like he’s really good at opening jars. He’s 26 years old and he’s undefeated at 10-0 with 8 not requiring the judges. Also read he’s the only fighter to win THREE fights on DWCS. What’s that about? Unbeaten, a finisher, young. Why did they make him go through the rigmarole of the Contender Series thrice? Anyone who still reads these threads keep up with DWCS and know the story? Gotta be a reason but nothing on his record jumps out as obvious. He won by submission on his first DWCS appearance in 2023, then by unanimous decision in August last year, then fought again on there in October and got a first round TKO. Doesn’t seem like there was any controversy, no No Contests, no DQs etc. Whatever. He’s in now. Third time lucky. Switzerland’s Valentin turns 30 a few days before this fight and he’s 10-4-0-1 with 9 finishes. He made it to the TUF finals in August but came up short, losing by TKO to Ryan Loder. Apparently his nickname is ‘Robzilla’ if Sherdog has it right. Lame. Rooting for Finney now just on the strength of that alone. Dione Barbosa vs Diana Belbita. Yawn. Zero interest in this. Brazil’s Barbosa is 32 years old and 7-3 with 3 submissions. She’s coming off a decision loss against Miranda Maverick in her last fight in July. Belbita is Romanian, 28 years old and 15-9 with 10 finishes. She’s gone 2-5 in her last 7 fights, she’s coming off back-to-back losses and she has the dubious honour of being the only fighter Molly McCann managed to beat in the last 5 fights of her career. Yeah. If you’re gonna subject yourself to these Apex cards, fights like this are why you never watch live. Leave it to the Sunday at the earliest so you can at least fast forward through drivel like this. Life’s too short. Rhys McKee vs Daniel Frunza. Another fight where I don’t know what to expect. McKee’s a weird one and not just for the ‘Skeletor’ nickname. He’s 29 years old, 13-6-1 with all 13 of his wins coming inside the distance. And he’s allergic to UFC wins. It seems that way anyway. If you remember, he initially made his UFC debut back in 2020 and immediately got fed to some fella named Khamzat Chimaev. That didn’t end well. He then lost again to Alex Morono end that was that. He was released, went 3-0 in Cage Warriors and won the title there, returned to the UFC in September 2023 and has gone 0-2 since, losing to Ange Loosa and Chidi Njokuani. He just can’t get that first UFC win for love nor money. Poor prick. Frunza’s Romanian, 30 years old and 9-2 with 8 knockouts. Can’t find much else on him but he’s on a 5 fight streak and coming off a TKO win on DWCS in September. Loma Lookboonmee vs Istela Nunes is a nothing fight. I like Loma but there’s just nothing to sink your teeth into here. Nunes was originally supposed to fight Molly McCann on the Edwards vs Brady undercard in London but pulled out. I thought it was odd seeing her booked again so quickly but apparently it was Visa issues not injury, so that explains it. I said in the London thread, it was so obvious the matchmakers were blatantly trying to spoon feed Molly a win there. Nunes is on a 4 fight losing skid and has been inactive since July 2023. Can’t even really remember anything about her now but needless to say, at 6-5-0-1 overall, 0-4 in her last 4 and coming off almost two years on the shelf, she’s in desperate need of a win here. Thailand’s Lookboonmee is 29 years old, 9-3 and currently on a 3 fight winning streak. She’s not amazing and she’s very much a striking specialist but she does have a couple of subs on her record as well. Victor Henry vs Pedro Falcao, again, don’t know. Like so many Fight Night cards these days, this one’s full of fights where I might know or like one fighter but can’t recall or have never seen the other. This is one of them. Quite like Henry. Solid fighter in his own right but I always find myself rooting for him just because he’s Josh Barnett’s protégé. He’s 37 years old now, so surely on borrowed time as a Bantamweight, and has a record of 24-7-0-1 with 15 finishes. Mixed results recently. He stopped fellow veteran Rani Yahya with a headkick last April but then got subbed by Charles Jourdain on the Edmonton card in November. Not a clue on this Falcao chap though. Sherdog tells me he’s Brazilian, 32 years old, trains out of Nova Uniao and he’s 16-4 with 11 finishes. Made his UFC debut last April and lost to Victor Hugo on points. Let’s see if the Victor curse continues for him here. Martin Buday vs Uran Satybaldiev has been flung together at the eleventh hour. Was meant to be Buday vs Kennedy Nzechukwu but Nzechukwu pulled out two days out from the show. In steps Satybaldiev, making his UFC debut on stupidly late notice. Looking him up, I see he’s from Kyrgyzstan and he’s unbeaten at 8-0 with 6 finishes. LFA champ and just won his last fight by submission in early March. So in theory he should be pretty sharp still here. We’ll see. Funny thing is, when I looked him up, I couldn’t even find his age. Neither Tapology or Sherdog have his age listed and I wasn’t gonna do any further research than that so fuck it. Buday’s Slovakian, 33 years old and 14-2 with 9 finishes. He’s coming off a split decision win over Andrei Arlovski back in June. Terrible fight from what I remember. Vanessa Demopoulos vs Talita Alencar. Not arsed. Typical Apex fodder. Demopoulos is 36 years old and 11-6 with 5 finishes. She’s the woman who’s more known for jumping into the arms of whoever’s doing the post-fight interview than her actual fights. She’s done it to the lot of them. ? She’s not much good though. She’s lost pretty much any time she’s had even a moderate step up and she’s coming into this fight off a submission loss to Jaqueline Amorim in September. I remember hearing that her fight with Loopy Godinez in LFA a few years ago was actually a bit of a war, they went 5 rounds in 2020 apparently. It’s on my ever growing list of ‘maybe I’ll get around to it’ fights to watch. Alencar’s Brazilian, 34 years old and 5-1-1 in MMA. She’s a BJJ black-belt and trains under Charles McCarthy AKA ‘Captain Miserable’ (TUF 4!). She made her UFC debut last August and lost to Stephanie Luciano on points. Gotta admit I’ve been thinking for a while about just making one separate thread for the Apex cards. I’ll still do my usual threads for PPVs and Fight Nights that are ‘on the road’ but I’m not sure we can even justify a thread for each Apex card at this point? Maybe we can just do it like the ‘This Weekend’s Boxing’ thread and I’ll update the thread title as we go with whatever Apex card is next. Might just whack the poster and the card in there and put some quick thoughts but sack off doing the full card breakdown? Quote

Selfishly, I'd love it if there was a separate thread for each Apex show as when I see it flash up on a Thursday or Friday before the show I remember it's happening. Plus, it's not like this section of the forum is flooded with new topics. Obviously do not do the full write ups for them as I can't begin to imagine how painful they are to write. Poster and card is enough. That's just me being selfish and lazy though. Go with the Majority! I don't post as much as I used to on here but I am always reading. Regarding the show, how crazy is it that Lerone Murphy has beat both Dan Ige and Edson Barboza, the latter being in a main event, he's english, yet there is zero hype behind him from these shores. I know we criticise the UFC for not creating stars, but sometimes fighters need to look in the mirror and try and create some buzz themselves, I know very little about Murphy, I can't recall ever hearing him being interviewed. I also think this fight should have been on the UFC London card as a 3 rounder, with a solid performance and win, it could have been Murphys coming out party. Quote

Yeh this is where the Apex thing fucks me off. I have little real issue with the actual card quality. If you pay close enough attention and really dig into them there's usually lots of really good fights, and I watch enough shite to see that the level here is still very high. My issue is the setting and the feeling that it just feels like leftover's thrown onto a card to make a fight night. Even from something as silly as the poster mentioned above, it just feels like as little effort as possibly goes into them as possible. Then on top, it looks and sounds like utter shite on the actual night. Murphy/Emmett would have been a solid co-main for London, or alternatively it could have headlined a smaller Cali show for example. Just get these fighters in front of their home audiences, they'll look like superstars and they deserve it. It feels like all they need to do is shuffle around the cards they already have. Jeremy Stephens being brought back for a one off in Des Moines in a few weeks is a great step in the right direction, more of that is needed. Murphy's 8 UFC fights have taken place in front of crowds, imagine reaching headline status and going backwards to fight at the Apex, the only thing he'll hear whilst fights is Michael Bisping babbling on, telling a story off the side of the cage, shite. Either one big thread/dumping ground for the Apex stuff or I’ll still do separate threads for each event but, either way, I think this one will be the last time I do a full card write up for an Apex card. Fuck it. It’s funny actually that this is the card that’s broke me because I really don’t think it’s that bad for an Apex show. Main event’s actually really good and Brito, Meerschaert, Grant and Henry on the undercard are all fighters I enjoy watching. I think that Vettori vs Dolidze 2 card the other week was my breaking point though. Still haven’t watched any of that card despite hearing it actually turned out way better than it looked on paper. This is definitely better than that but I’m just at the point now where these cards are killing a lot of my love for the sport and I’m sick of being negative in the opening posts. 20 hours ago, Zebra Kid Mark said: I know very little about Murphy, I can't recall ever hearing him being interviewed. Here’s…something you probably didn’t know about him. Sounds like he’s probably got a bit more of a story than we’ve heard. But yeah, I don’t check for fighter interviews the way I used to years ago. Just don’t have as much time for that anymore, plus so many fighters have outed themselves as cretins over the years I think I just subconsciously started avoiding listening to what a lot of them have to say about anything. But obviously bits and pieces do reach me and I’ll learn of random shit like Arnold Allen’s love for Supermarket Meal Deals or serious issues like Nathaniel Wood’s little girl battling health problems. Murphy’s a guy I never really hear about though. And that coupled with his solid but unspectacular fighting style doesn’t do him any favours. He’s basically the Manchester version of Leon Edwards in many ways. It’s almost forgotten now because Leon did reach the top of the division eventually but he was basically what Murphy is now for a few years. Just winning a bunch of decisions to little fanfare. Showing skills but not wowing anyone. It’s very similar. The problem is, Leon made it to the title shot by the time he was 30/31. Murphy’s already 33, he’ll be 34 in July, and he’s still not there yet. Plus as a Featherweight, he’s in a tougher division than Leon was at Welterweight. 20 hours ago, Zebra Kid Mark said: I also think this fight should have been on the UFC London card as a 3 rounder, with a solid performance and win, it could have been Murphys coming out party. This is the problem with the schedule these days and the UFC having to fulfill all these dates. Murphy vs Emmett absolutely should’ve been on the London card but they needed a headliner for this card at their dead, soulless warehouse. They’re just constantly plugging holes and at times I look at some of the matchmaking and which fights end up on which cards and I’m genuinely scratching my head. Sometimes it honestly feels like they bit off more than they can chew when they signed the ESPN deal and committed to almost weekly cards. They’ve spread the roster about as thin as it gets as it is, then you throw in the fact they’re lowballing legit prospects and often end up not signing them, the steady stream of DWCS nobodies, the lack of new stars, the lack of really compelling rivalries (rivalries isn’t just spamming instant rematches!) and then plop a big dollop of soul crushing Apex cards on top and it’s just undeniable that the UFC is nowhere near as fun to follow as it used to be. I know why they do what they do from a business perspective and I know they don’t really care about what I’m saying. But still, purely as a viewer it’s shite to see the decline. Got to echo pretty much 100% of what Eggy said there as well. It’s mad to think that there’s probably a decent sized chunk of the fanbase who came to the sport during the lockdown/early Apex era and they don’t know any better. I think those of us who are left still posting MMA on here all were around when times were better though. It’s not rose tints. It genuinely was better and more fun. Christ, didn’t mean to ramble on like that! Quote
Bruce85 Posted March 31, 2025 Posted March 31, 2025 Echo what others have said that your post @wandshogun09 are amazing but I wouldn’t blame you if you’ve had enough of doing them for the apex shows. Your post are brilliant and my go to for pre-fight hype and I appreciate all the effort you have put in over the years, thank you! I’ve been reading this forum for years but only started posting recently but it seems like user numbers are down and there often isn’t much discussion on these apex cards so one big apex thread might be the way to go. It definitely isn’t the best era to be an MMA fan, despite more UFC than ever it’s become a slog to watch all these apex shows. Feels over saturated and a bit forced now, at times it feels more like a chore or an obligation to sit down on a Sunday morning and watch the dregs slog it out in a soulless building. I’ve been watching UFC since the days of VHS and Bravo tv and rarely missed anything but the past 6 months or so I’ve found myself skipping whole shows and not even bothering going back to watch the good fights. Paid Members Carbomb Posted March 31, 2025 Paid Members Posted March 31, 2025 Yeh, your posts are the main reason I was able to get into MMA at all, wand, even at a casual level; I would've found it too much of an overload to try and get into it without the information you provided over the years. But I can't imagine what it costs you in energy to write about the shitter cards at the Apex. It is indeed a shit time to follow the UFC; between the usual bullshit, and the most recent political shite, with Plastic Caesar copping out on Bryce Mitchell, and still having McGregor around, they can just fuck off now. I do actually enjoy doing the opening posts in general but these Apex shows now, more and more often I’m finding myself typing about fighters I don’t know anything about in fights I don’t care about and, let’s face it, it’s not even like the threads for the Apex cards even generate much conversation. I’ll probably still end up watching the vast majority of it because I’m a sick individual like that. So if there’s something of note that happens, there’ll still be a thread to discuss it in. I’m just done doing full previews of Apex cack. The UFC themselves clearly don’t give a shite about these cards so why should we? Quote
Paid Members wandshogun09 Posted April 4, 2025 Author Paid Members Posted April 4, 2025 Couple of card changes if anyone’s arsed. • Kennedy Nzechukwu is out as of a couple of days before his fight against Martin Buday. UFC newcomer Uran Satybaldiev (8-0, LFA champ) steps in against Buday. • And Daniel Santos didn’t weigh in within the hour he was supposed to so his fight with Davey Grant (one of the best fights on the card!) is in the bin. Honestly, Santos has had so many fight cancellations at this point he might as well jack MMA in. Feel bad for Grant though. At 39 years old he really could do without having his time wasted like this. Quote
