Spartak 1 - 2 Lazio

Lazio claimed all three points in a hard fought win over Spartak in a game which could have quite as easily been won by Spartak. After an early half chance for Spartak it was Lazio who started to take control of the game, and twice they had scrambles in the box where the 'keeper and/or his defenders made some crucial blocks. Lazio's intent to attack was their downfall though as Spartak countered and the ball was played to Kombarov who was in acres of space of the left-hand side. Kombarov made his way unchallenged towards the box and rather than continue on and take on the 'keeper, he instead curled a shot from just outside the area into the back of the net. Lazio tried for an equaliser whilst Spartak were looking for a second, but both teams cancelled each other out for the rest of the first half. Spartak started the brightest in the second half and had a couple good chances to score, the best of which fell to Welliton whose effort when one-on-one with Muslera was saved by the 'keeper's left hand. Spartak were made to regret missing that chance as from the save Lazio put together a nice passing move up the field which lead to Zarate's through ball finding Floccari who managed to slot the ball past the 'keeper despite the attention of a defender. Both sides searched for the winner after this and Lazio came close when Mauri's powerful strike was pushed wide for a corner by Pesyakov. Just a couple of minutes later, Welliton again missed a one-on-one chance when his shot was smothered by Muslera. Once again they were made to regret the miss as in the 87th minute Floccari, under pressure from the onrushing 'keeper decided to chip the ball across the box where Mauro Zarate stuck out a leg and beat the Spartak defender to the ball to put the Italians into the lead. Spartak didn't give up and from the kickoff there were some anxious moments for Lazio. A (perhaps soft) freekick was given on the edge of the box and the ball was fizzed just wide but looked like it was heading in. Spartak continued applying pressure in injury time but Lazio were able to scramble the ball away on a couple of occasions to hold on to the win. A great game overall, very tense towards the end and Spartak were unlucky not to get anything from the match.

Spartak goal: Kombarov (20')

Lazio goals: Floccari (59'), Zarate (87')

Highlights:

Kombarov's curled effort gives Spartak the lead.

Floccari equalises for Lazio after a nice passing move.

newcastle 4 lazio 1

ireland, ameobi 2 gutierrez

a deserved victory in a strange contest that had to be restarted at 2-1 after what i belive to b crowd trouble forcing the players to leave the field only to resume shortly after!! before the stoppage, lazio took the lead after a well orked move and a neat finish from the edge of the box, before newcastle burst into life with two quick goals 1st from stephen ireland after the dirtiest of cut backs to leave it on plate for him to finish! and then ameobi heading into an empty net after some suspect keeping!

when play resumed newcastle were able to pick off there opponents with two more goals!! a good game all in all!!

9 points required!!!!

Lazio 1 - 4 Newcastle

After being dominated last time these two sides met Lazio thought their fortunes had changed when seven minutes in a quick attack starting just inside their own half lead to Floccari scoring with a neat right footed shot from the edge of the box. Lazio's fortunes took a turn for the worse again when after gaining the ball from the kickoff, some intricate passing backfired and Newcastle attacked with the ball eventually being cut back to allow Steven Ireland to score. It didn't take long for Lazio's fortunes to fall off a cliff when just four minutes later a chipped cross was headed home by Ameobi, who was left completely unmarked by the slacking Lazio defenders. After the game resumed after the crowd trouble (unfortunately some cameras were damaged, hence no footage of the first three goals!) it was mostly all Newcastle. Newcastle had a few decent chances to increase their lead, their best being a curling effort from Steven Ireland. They did score a third not long after the break when a poor headed clearance fell straight to Ameobi in the box and he fired a low shot into the back of the net. Newcastle wasted several good chances to make it four with Ameobi and Gutierrez missing the best of the bunch. Eventually the pressure paid off and they did make it four in the last minute of the game when a clearance from a cross was headed back into the box by Kevin Nolan and Gutierrez was able to nod the ball over Muslera. Overall a well deserved win for Newcastle. After my goal and until the cutoff point I think I only had about one shot.

Lazio goal: Floccari (7')

Newcastle goals: Ireland (10'), Ameobi (14', 51'), Gutierrez (89')

Highlights:

Ameobi scores Newcastle's third.

Gutierrez's nods in goal number four.

newcastle 2 - 1 sunderland

nolan 35min stephen ireland 90th minute!!!!

A heroic piece of magic from stephen ireland kept newcastles slim hopes of the title alive after a tense n nervey newcastle perfomance in a heated local derby!!

nolan opened the scoring from the spot after a cynical foul on gutierrez as he shot over. sunderland equalised through a flaw of the game when asamoah gyan turned through stephen taylor and slotted home!

COMETH THE HOUR COMETH THE MAN!!!

with 90 minutes up on the clock a free kick to newcastle was awarded right on the edge of the sunderland box! direct from the training ground a move was put together that gave ireland a little extra time on the ball from 16 yards and he blasted high into the top corner to send the geordie faithful ecstatic!!!
