Mr Hughes

Why wasn't Mr. Hughes in the original Nation? Wasnt he knocking about around that time as Triple H's bodyguard? The nation had a shit load of black blokes who just stood there. He was 1) Black 2) he stood there 3) he had an optional tash and sunglasses combo which the Nation specialised in. Missed the boat there.

Well I'll be the first here to say Hughes had some good matches. There's a match with Marty Jannetty on Challenge in '93 that is awesome. vs. Sting in WCW and there's also a 6-man with Vader and Cactus Jack vs. Sting and The Steiners that's great. He was far from great but I always kind of dug how badass he seemed.

Well it would certainly have made sense, he would've been tailor made for that type of role, and if he was around the WWF at the time I would be surprised if they didn't consider him.

The rumoured member i always remember reading about was Butch Reed. And some guy i know nothing of by the name of Reggie B. Fine. Or was that D-Lo's name on the Indies or something?

Wonder who the dude was who went through the table at the 97 rumble, that was quite a fair bump that.

Reggie B. Fine was/is a local Memphis worker. And actually, when USWA ran their own Nation of Domination angle Reggie was indeed a member of the Nation along with PG-13, Jacqueline, Mo from Men on a Misssion, Tracy Smothers, Spellbinder and some other folks.

From watching Ahmed's shoot it was his friend from the Indy's who owned him money.

I've always seen Mr Hughes as the missing third Harris Brother in terms of being shite. Never seen anything in him.

Blimey, they wouldn't have been cool with that. Not one bit!

Would have loved to have seen Russo try to book it though.

That's one time I wouldn't have minded Russo doing one of his worked shoot angles where they have him reveal the big news to Big Ron and Heavy D just to see their facial expressions.

I don't really think of Hughes in those terms though. The Harris Boys weren't the worst workers but they were big bland guys who always seemed to be on TV in one of the modern US Big Six of WWF/E, WCW, ECW, SMW, USWA and TNA until it got boring because for a decade or so you just couldn't escape them if you were a fan of mainstream wrestling. Hughes was a guy with an awesome look and decent promo skills who would pop up every now and then for a short cameo. So even if you hated him you knew he wouldn't be around for very long.

If I had to compare him to someone more recent then for me he's more like Michael Tarver or Nathan Jones in terms of guys who have a great look in terms of just looking hard and facial expressions (one of Hughes' strong points) but aren't exactly Bam Bam Bigelow in terms of being polished in-ring. Hughes had the fancier offense and was a smarter worker though.

To put things in perspective, other than maybe half a dozen guys I don't think there is anyone in WWE who looks tougher than him. There are plenty of really solid workers right now. Guys who look like they could kill you? Far less so.

Hughes kept the gimmich wherever he went though, fair play to him. He did WWF, WCW and ECW with exactly the same gimmick, not many people can claim that can they? or am i just forgetting a shit load?

Other than top guys, not that many no. I watched that match of his that JakeRobertsParoleOfficer posted earlier last night and he is still doing the same 'act' today (still doing the bodyguard inspired gimmick being called 'Total Protection', still talking about stealing Undertaker's urn, etc.) which is pretty cool really.

As far as the match itself (which I don't think anyone has commented on): He looks to be in the same shape he was in Memphis back in 2007 which is a good thing and seemed to be moving around the ring pretty well (as he was during the Lawler feud back then). Nice armdrag and some old school heel antics (like the fake handshake with a 'loaded' glove behind your back) in the match. He still bumps well which was always something he was willing to do for guys like the Steiners.

Considering who he worked with then really it would be surprising if he hadn't had any. Haven't seen the Jannetty one since the time but I can believe that. Thought Jannetty was one of the top three or four guys in the States that year and he barely had bad matches with anyone. I even liked his match with Ludvig Borga (another guy with a great look and some cool moves who lacked the total package) that year.

I found his tag matches with the Steiners to be disappointing after years of seeing pictures of them in the magazines. They looked so cool (and him and Vader as a team just seemed like a nice idea in general) that found the matches themselves couldn't live up to the hype. Steiners throwing big guys around is fun - they just seemed to be lacking something. Not sure I've seen the sixman though. Will watch it later. I don't think anyone would disagree there was the potential for a good match somewhere in that series and maybe that is it.

Yep. Also worked as King Reginald. Last time I saw him he was working a pimp type gimmick in Memphis. I think it was him being in the Memphis version of the Nation that made people think he would end up in WWF's one although in fairness I think there may have been plans to bring him up at one point. He was one of those USWA guys like Jeff Jarrett, PG-13 and Brian Christopher who were always rumoured to be heading to WWF long before they ever showed up. Just in his case he's unusual because it never happened.
